ON1 2022 Announced

New Sky Swap AI — Automatically detects the sky in photos and creates a mask. Select from one of the over 100 included skies or import your own. You have complete control over the mask used to blend the sky and can use the masking tools you are already familiar with to adjust it as needed. You can adjust the sky to blend better with your foreground, even blur the sky to simulate a long exposure. Not only does it replace the sky, but it will adjust the foreground lighting and color and add a reflection of the sky to water found in the foreground. You can even copy and paste to other layers for ultimate control.

New Time-Lapse Creation — The New time-lapse creation dialog can quickly create time-lapse videos from still photo sequences. You can preview your results right in the dialog and create quick proof versions or high-quality final results. It detects when the camera is bumped and can filter out misaligned frames. It also detects changes in exposure and can even them out automatically, making day to night videos possible. Finally, you can increase or decrease the speed to stretch out short sequences into longer, smooth videos.

Integration of ON1 NoNoise AI — ON1’s powerful, AI-based noise removal is now built into the core raw processing in ON1 Photo RAW. You can use it on the fly and non-destructively, just like any other raw processing adjustment—no need to create intermediate DNG or TIF files.

New Photoshop Plugin Host — You can now run plugins made for Adobe Photoshop right inside ON1 Photo RAW. If you have been collecting plugins for years, now you can access them and what makes them unique right inside the app where you do the rest of your work, no need to launch or subscribe to Photoshop.

Newly Retooled Export — We took over 100 suggestions from our users and have rebuilt Export from the ground up. It is the most powerful Export and image converter you can imagine. First, presets are more powerful. You can run them right from the file menu, and you can run more than one simultaneously. There are more options for everything. In File Type, you can now create DNGs or export copies of the original. The file renaming is infinitely flexible, as is the creation of destinations. You can now use multiple watermarks at the same time and use text or graphics for them. Resizing is more powerful and flexible than ever. And finally, you have control over what metadata is written to exported files.

New Line Mask Tool — Similar to a polygonal lasso or pen tool, it can quickly create masks using straight lines. You can now curve the lines, add and remove points, or change the feather and opacity of the shapes you create anytime, even after creation. They are entirely non-destructive and work hand-in-hand with the other powerful masking tools in ON1 Photo RAW.

Backup and Restore — Prepare for the worst and recover easily with the backup and restore features. They back up all your work, settings, albums, presets, and extras. You can use the restore feature to recover from a disaster on your computer or migrate everything to a new computer.

Favorites in Browse — We have added a Favorites pane to Browse to help you access frequently used folders easier. Drag and drop a folder you often access to the Favorites pane to create a shortcut to it. You can navigate through the favorites subfolder quickly in the Favorites pane without having to worry about all the folders above it.

Customizable Thumbnails  — Now, you have great flexibility over the appearance of the thumbnails in Browse. You can control what is displayed on them, how big the labels are and when they appear. You can choose between light or dark themes and also between regular or square thumbnails.

Gestures — Zooming, panning, and changing photos is more natural with a smooth, animated experience, with full gesture support on macOS trackpads and Windows touch-screen devices

Apple Silicon Native — ON1 Photo RAW now runs natively on Apple Silicon-based macOS computers.

Fujifilm GFX50R Discontinued‽

Digitalcameraworld is reporting that the Fujifilm GFX50R is officially discontinued, but that doesn’t sound quite right to me unless the GFX50R is being refreshed soon. To the best of my knowledge, the GFX50R sold a lot better than the GFX50S, and when the GFX100 was announced the GFX50S sales lagged even more, but the GFX50R sales remained strong. I doubt Fujifilm would pull the GFX50R without a replacement unless this is tied to the chip shortage or they have a replacement GFX50R II coming soon.

Further, the GFX100S styled GFX50SII is not liked by most that loved the GFX50S/GFX50R. The original GFX50S was almost a perfect camera and all Fujifilm needed to do was remove the bulge from the back to make photographers more interested in the camera. Fujifilm proved they could fix the bulge with the GFX50R and Fujifilm even had a better price point that helped the GFX50R cut deeply into GFX50S sales from what I have seen and it is the kind of update Fujifilm should have made with the GFX50S II instead of copying the GFX100S body. Yes using one body can cut costs for Fujifilm, but those savings do not appear to have been passed along to the consumer at the GFX50S II launch price point.

I have been shooting GFX since day one and I loved the GFX50S but I probably would have bought a GFX50R if they were announced at the same time due to the lack of bulge and lower price point. Still today I would pick the GFX50S or GFX50R over the GFX100S or GFX50S II simply because I like the bodies Fujifilm launched with most. I would also pick a GFX100 over GFX100S because even though the GFX100S is more compact than GFX100 the GFX100 is an all-around better camera in my experience and the quality of the camera has helped to keep the price point and resale quite high. That being said GFX50S had a superior layout to the GFX100 too.

GFX isn’t for everyone and I know Fujifilm is trying to expand the appeal with its new design philosophy, but at the same time, I think they are turning off a pretty big portion of their base with the latest announcements. I haven’t considered going back to shooting Leica as my primary camera since the GFX100 came out, but if they continue down this path Fujifilm will become a secondary camera for me like Sony did because Leica will be the only company left making cameras that operate the way I like them too.

Fujifilm needs to be careful not to lose its base in pursuit of Sony/Canon/Nikon, because most of us are picking Fujifilm over the competition due to its traditionally superior shooting experience that is absent from the GFX100S/GFX50S II/X-S10 and other low-end X mount cameras. Similarly, most photographers would love to own and shoot Leica cameras due to their superior shooting experience, but Leica’s exorbitant price point puts them out of reach for most, while many Fujifilm cameras provide 99% of the Leica experience for a fraction of the price.

If Fujifilm continues chasing Sony/Canon/Nikon instead of doing its own thing I’m afraid they might end up on the scrap heap like other brands that tried to do the same. Fujifilm needs to pursue its strengths and go back to ignoring the inferior products that Sony/Canon/Nikon are making if they want to lock in an audience.

DPRTV: Fujifilm X Summit Reaction Video

Fujifilm GFX50SII:

Fujinon XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR
B&H Photo / Amazon / Moment / Adorama

DPRTV is doing something new with their latest Fujifilm X Summit reaction video. Below is a summary:

  • Fujifilm’s biggest announcement that they have ever done
  • The GF35-70mm does feel kind of plasticy, but the lens is super sharp and well corrected with minimal breathing
  • There is a tilt-shift coming but we don’t know the focal length or aperture
  • Many use Canon tilt-shift lenses on the GFX right now, but you can’t tilt it very much and Fujifilm’s solution should allow for a lot of shift
  • The best lens for landscapes on GFX has been the 23mm f/4 up until now
  • The announcement of the GF20-35mm now gives us another great option for landscape photographers
  • If the GF20-35mm is f/4 constant it will be huge and a f/4.5-5.6 might be a good compromise for size
  • Hopefully the GF20-35mm will allow for front filters too instead of filters that fit on the back of the lens
  • The GF55mm f/1.4 makes sense because there aren’t a lot of fast lenses in that range
  • The GF55mm is the only GFX lens they announced with an aperture
  • The X-T30 II has the same processor as the X-T4 so now in the entry-level you have a choice between the big-bodied X-S10 with a PSAM dial and IBIS or the compact body of the X-T30 II with traditional dials
  • XF23mm f/1.4 is new optics that is weather resistance, fast, and sharp, but not having the focus clutch from the previous XF23mm is disappointing
  • XF150-600mm coming from Fujifilm is exciting, but we have no idea what the aperture is going to be or if this will be a very expensive
  • Fujifilm needs to get some great long glass out there before Tamron starts releasing some of their glass or Sigma decides to start releasing X-mount lenses
  • The XF18-120mm for X-mount is yet another lens without an aperture that is designed with video in mind
  • The XF18-120mm is going to have a linear motor so it might be difficult to manually focus unless it is a power zoom or something like that
  • Fujifilm is telling them no clutches with linear motors
  • New Stacked BSI sensor with an X-Trans filter was also announced
  • The new sensor will really step up X-mount and might be shutterless
  • APS-C will allow for a faster readout speed than Full Frame
  • Predicting two bodies one that is more sport centric and one that is more video-centric
