NiSi 9mm f/2.8 Announced

NiSi 9mm f/2.8: B&H Photo / Amazon

The details of the NiSi 9mm f/2.8 were first leaked here, but the lens has now been officially announced.

New: NiSi 9mm F/2.8 ultra-wide angle for APS-C mirrorless cameras
The Transcontinenta Group, distributor NiSi Benelux, introduces the all-new NiSi 9mm F2.8 ultra-wide angle for APS-C Sony FE, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Fuji-X mirrorless cameras as well as M4/3 cameras.

NiSi has long been known among professional photographers as one of the best manufacturers of high-quality “square” filters and filter holders for almost every camera brand and type of lens.  In recent years, NiSi has expanded its range to include circular filters, filters for luxury compact cameras from Sony, Ricoh and Fuji, a NiSi Close-up Lens Kit and an NM-180 Macro Focusing Rail. In early 2021, NiSi took the next step, using its technological know-how in manufacturing high-quality glass in developing NiSi’s first lens, the NiSi 15mm F4.0 for full-frame mirrorless cameras. Today, with the 9mm F2.8, NiSi presents the second ultra-wide-angle lens with an angle of view of a whopping 113 degrees, for APS-C and M4/3 mirrorless cameras.

Made for the creative and demanding photographer
When designing the NiSi 9mm F2.8 ultra-wide angle, NiSi listened very carefully to the wishes and input of dozens of professional photographers who work with NiSi filters on their (wide-angle) lenses almost every day. For example, the optical design of this APS-C NiSi 9mm lens is completely tailored to the sensor in the mirrorless camera, so that image sharpness remains high from the centre to the edges of the image. The use of high-quality optical glass, four ED lens elements and a double aspherical element, not only ensure high detail sharpness, but also greatly reduce chromatic aberration and distortion. The lens is also well-corrected against distortion of bright points in the image (coma), making it ideal for astrophotography.  NiSi’s in-house developed SA+ anti-reflection coating, protective hard coating, metal housing and metal bayonet ensure successful shots in a wide variety of conditions. NiSi has equipped the lens with a 10-blade, continuously adjustable aperture, making it possible to get a “sun star” at any aperture, from F2.8 to F16. This increases image sharpness, so diffraction can be avoided by having to stop down too far! Read More »

Understanding the Fujifilm X-H2S and Fujifilm X-H2

The Fujifilm X-H2S and X-H2 are interesting cameras, but it looks like some photographers might be confused by the naming conventions and specs so Fujifilm released a video for them, which you can watch above or get a summary of below:

Understanding the Fujifilm X-H2S vs. X-H2

  • X-H2S costs $500 more than the X-H2
  • They are the exact same bodies with the same weather sealing, IBIS, card slots, full-size HDMI, USB-C, battery grips, cooling can, XLR input adapter, processor, and shutter
  • The sensors in these cameras are very different with the X-H2S having a 26MP stacked BSI sensor and the X-H2 having a 40MP BSI sensor
  • Both cameras have very accurate AF, but the stacked sensor in the X-H2S lets you focus faster, and the X-H2 has more PDAF sensors
  • AF-C will be much better on the X-H2S for stills and video
  • The Fujifilm X-H2S electronic shutter can shoot at 40fps without a crop, while the X-H2 can only go up to 20fps cropped 29%
  • The max shutter speed on the X-H2S is 1/32,000th a second, and the X-H2 can go up to 180,000th a second
  • Multishot high-resolution mode is only available on the X-H2 to create a 160MP sensor in post-processing
  • The Fujifilm X-H2S has less rolling shutter than the X-H2, thanks to the stacked sensor
  • Both cameras can record prores internal, and they both have F-Log2, which extends the dynamic range over F-Log
  • The Fujifilm X-H2S has an extra stop of dynamic range when recording video than the X-H2
  • Fujifilm X-H2S will capture 6.2k using the entire sensor, which is helpful when shooting with anamorphic lenses
  • Fujifilm X-H2 can capture an over-sampled 4k HQ image using the entire sensor to capture 8k video and then down samples to 4k for finer results

PB: Fujifilm X-H2 Review The Pinnacle of APS-C Performance

The Fujifilm X-H2 and X-H2S have been very well received, and websites are just getting around to posting their full X-H2 reviews. The Photography blog posted its review, and the X-H2 did very well with it, receiving an almost perfect score. You can read the full review here or check out the excerpts below:

Both models represent the absolute pinnacle of what Fuji can currently achieve with an APS-C sensor and, ably supported by a long list of excellent lenses, they far surpass what the likes of Canon, Nikon and Sony have to offer with their equivalent systems…the two new X-H models are so good that they also represent a much cheaper, yet still very high quality alternative, to their rivals’ full-frame systems, offering comparable levels of speed and resolution without having to break the bank…the new X-H2 ups the detail ante to 40 megapixels, the highest of any APS-C camera, impressively without introducing too much noise at higher ISO values, and it also offers the cherry on top of 8K/30p video recording and still blazing fast 20fps burst shooting, albeit the latter being with a modest 1.29x crop.

If you don’t need the high resolution, better AF and improved video capabilities of the X-H2, you can happily save quite a lot of money by opting for one of the cheaper former flagship models such as the X-T4, a deal that is sweetened even further if you prefer their more traditional user interfaces…The X-H2 does have one major advantage over its speedy sibling, namely price… while the X-H2 and X-H2S may look absolutely identical, thanks to their sensor technologies they’re aimed at two quite different types of end user, although the former model’s 8K video mode will muddy the waters a little for some users. Both are outstanding cameras though – all you need to do is make sure to pick the right one…
