DPRTV: Fujinon XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6

DPRTV posted their review of the upcoming Fujinon XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 and I can’t wait to get mine. Below is a summary of their review:

  • 70-300mm in APS-C is really more like 105-450
  • A very versatile lens with a versatile range
  • Very compact design with a 67mm front filter thread
  • 588g which makes it a very plastic design
  • The dials are fine but a little lose
  • Other than that the build quality feels a lot like their other XF lenses
  • Aperture ring and focus limiter on the lens
  • Can be locked at 70mm to keep the lens from creeping walking around
  • The lens lock unlocks on its own when you zoom the lens
  • AF performance is quite nice and silent
  • Nice and snappy when using the focus limiter
  • Still very snappy without using the focus limiter
  • OIS in the lens with 5.5 stops of stabilization and it works with internal stabilization to give you 5 axis
  • There is almost no breathing with this lens
  • Minimal LoCA
  • 1:2 Macro reproduction so you can shoot wildlife and flowers
  • Not a very fast aperture lens, but you can get nice soft bokeh when you’re up close
  • Heavy cats eye when you shoot wide open, but stopping down a little helps a lot
  • Bokeh is wild wide open, but Chris prefers it stopped down, but still has onion rings
  • Nice transition from out of focus to in focus areas though so should be good for sports and wildlife, but you should avoid specularly highlights
  • Everything else is quite nice
  • Flare isn’t an issue
  • Nice lens hood
  • Sun stars are pretty good
  • 70mm f/4 has very nice sharpness and stopping down improves it a little across the frame
  • 300mm f/5.6 is nice and sharp again so the lens is very consistent across its range
  • 1.4xTC brings the lens up to about 420mm(588mm) f/8 and AF performance is still quite good and image quality loss is minimal
  • 2xTC brings the lens up to about 300mm (900mm) f/11 and AF performance is a little slower, but it still tracks fine and loses minimal image quality
  • This lens makes a lot of sense to a lot of people and kind of replaces the 55-200mm which is only a little brighter
