Fujifilm GFX 50S Hands-on, X Acquire Setup, Fujifilm GFX 50S Stock Update

The Slanted Lens released a Fujifilm GFX 50S video today with Michael Bulbenko from Fujifilm that is informative. Micheal brings up how the Fujinon 110mm f2 will be coming in a few short months and how they do an amazing job controlling noise on the GFX 50s, because there is no chroma noise. He also recommends UHS-II cards running at 300MB so that you won’t “run into trouble.” I figured these cards would be ideal, but I will compare my Lexar 1000X Professional and Lexar 2000X Professional cards as soon as my camera is delivered.

Slanted lens then shot the camera a bit and they said noise doesn’t really start to appear until 1,600 ISO. The camera will start to buffer quickly if you do 3fps bursts and the electronic shutter is awful if the subject is in motion.

ishootyou.com has a good video showing how to use X Acquire along side Lightroom for tethering your Fujifilm GFX 50S or Fujifilm X-T2, but it is in German so you have to use auto translate to read the captions. Setup is pretty easy after installing X Acquire you pick a folder for it to dump your image files too, which will most likely be RAW files. Then in Lightroom you go to File – Auto Import and specify all of your settings – I would likely set the initial previews to 1:1 to start with – Enable Auto Import. Then connect your camera and wait for the X Acquire logo to light up. Once that’s done go select previously imported under catalog and start shooting.

Fujifilm also released a guide for X Aquire

Fujifilm GFX 50S Stock update:
I called B&H Photo today to check on my pre-order and they haven’t received cameras according to the rep I talked with. I am very disappointed to say the least, but I am not surprised. It seems that Fujifilm is for filling orders at pro photo shops first. I called around to a few and they almost all received at least one camera. So if you’re waiting like I am they might be your best bet.

Fujifilm Groups:
The Fujifilm GFX Owners Group has been outstanding lately and it’s attracting more professional photographers everyday because it’s full of quality photographers. If you are one and would like to join us talking about medium format cameras there are already a hand full of great people on top of the people just looking for additional information. We aim to remain a collaborative group so please keep that in mind when joining.

If you just want more targeted news about the Fujifilm GFX system then the GFX Owners Page is for you, as I try to target news delivery a little better through Facebook. The X system will remain big going forward here, but as the two lines diverge going forward my goal is to send you only what you want to read to be efficient with your time. You can also follow the main Fujiaddict page on Facebook, which is a general feed for now or FujiAddict on Twitter if you prefer.

Fujifilm Interview by Imaging-Resource at CP+ 2017

A very lengthy and though interview by Imaging-resource of Shinichiro “Shiri” Udono and Makoto Oishi of Fujifilm. They have some really interesting discussions about film simulation and the over all mirrorless market, but the following are the take away points of interest.

  • Professional Camera retailers and Professional Distributor have been a big part of the Fujifilm GFX 50S launch, which is new because the X-system primarily sold through consumer channels.
  • Most customers are buying the 63mm or 32-64mm lens and about 30-40% of them then add the 120mm macro lens on top.
  • In the future we might see a 15mm and 200mm lens along with a tilt shift for the GFX.
  • Beyond primes they are thinking about one more zoom in the range of 70-200mm since the 32-64mm zoom was more popular than expected.
  • The GFX seems to be selling 50/50 to professionals and enthusiasts.
  • FinePix S3 Pro was the first camera to have film simulation
  • Fujifilm went from 14-15% of the mirrorless market to 20%
  • X-Pro2 has different hardware than X-T20 so 4k will not come to the X-Pro2
  • The new 80mm macro might be compatible with the x1.4 teleconverter making the 80mm macro capable of replacing the canceled 120mm Macro
  • Video on X-mount has been getting big thanks to the Fujifilm X-T2
  • Fujifilm X100 has been much bigger than expected and is a major product for Fujifilm especially in the US.
  • Instax is huge for Fujifilm and is popular among young people that never used film and are unaware of polaroid. They actually take pictures of their prints to share on Instagram.
  • Now Fujifilm is saying Capture One probably won’t support the GFX, which is why they are no offering so many solutions.

image courtesy of Ivan Joshua Loh

Ivan Joshua Loh compared the Fujifilm GFX 50s and Canon EOS-1DX and the GFX wins out in the weight department big time.

1530 grams Canon 1DX Mk II (with battery and card)
805 grams   EF 24-70mm F2.8 Mk II
2335 grams  Total

920 grams   Fujifilm GFX 50s ( with EVF )
879 grams   GF 32-64mm F4 WR
1799 grams Total

He also has more photos to share here.

There is currently a lengthy discussion about the usefulness of the Actus-GFX in our Fujifilm GFX Owners Group. It’s interesting that bellows are being marketed directly to GFX owners, because you can use pretty much any set of bellow you want with the GFX plate. I have been looking at calumet bellows. Intrepid camera also makes an inexpensive option.

We also had our first report of someone picking up their Fujifilm GFX 50S’ from the camera store in the owners group 7hrs ago and hope to receive more throughout the day.
