Emil Busch Glaukar 3.1 Portrait Lens Kickstarter

Photorumors is reporting another German lens being brought back to life on Kickstarter the Emil Busch Glaukar 3.1 portrait lens. If you are into classic glass this might be a good investment for you since there are still early bird spots available.

In 1910, Emil Busch introduced the Glaukar, a fully corrected photographic lens, which besides solving spherical aberration, corrected coma and astigmatism was a “usable” lens. Unlike Rudolph’s Protar, which did not work properly at the time of invention because its construction required glass coatings not available at the time, the Emil Busch Glaukar lens was the first anastigmatic lens for daily portrait photography. By creating his anastigmatic lenses, Busch corrected the above mentioned faults by careful combination of the lens elements. Sharpness and artistic images were possible for the first time.

The modern Glaukar will come in the following mounts:

  • Nikon
  • Canon
  • Sony E
  • Fuji
  • Micro Four Thirds
  • Leica M
  • Leica T

Lens technical specifications:

  • Focal length: 97mm
  • Maximum aperture: 1:3.1
  • Aperture range: 1:22
  • Image circle: 43mm
  • Field of view: 25°
  • Electronic contacts none
  • Closest focusing distance: 1.5 m
  • Filter thread: 37mm
  • Max diameter: length 73mm/80mm (DSLR), approx. 85mm mirrorless
  • Weight: 410 g

Fujifilm GFX 50S: Roundup

Lok ran into Philip Bloom at NAB and he had a Fujifilm GFX 50s on him along with the Pentax 645Z. It sounds like he doesn’t want to give Fujifilm their GFX back. Unfortunately, Bloom only posted a few photos on his social media (Facebook, Instagram) while he had the GFX along with an under exposed DNG file here. I really would have liked to have seen him do some serious video work with the GFX.

Fujifilm SQ10: Reviews

The Instax SQ10 is hard to classify in the world of photography today, due to its point and shoot nature with a printer attached when most point and shoot cameras are dead. Today a 1″ sensor or larger has become pretty standard beyond camera phones so in a way the Instax SQ10 is most like an iPhone with an Instax SP-2 printer, which is DPReviews perspective in their recent review. They summed the Instax SQ10 up as:

What we like:

  • Digital conveniences like saving images and printing later
  • Lovely square format film
  • Good battery life

What we don’t like:

  • Small sensor struggles in low light
  • Prints are expensive at around $1.50 each
  • Tendency to crush shadows can make it difficult to judge exposure

and gave it 3.5 stars, which is outside of DPReviews normal camera rating system.

On the other hand, Camera Labs was more forgiving and actually recommend the Instax SQ10 in their review, because they seem to get understand the market better. Instax is largely about the joy of photography and prints. Kids really do light up when you hand them a small print on the spot right out of your camera and to me, that’s worth the price of admission alone.

If you really want to know everything about the Instax SQ10 you can watch Gordon Laing’s video review above, which is almost an hour long, or you can watch Lauren & Rob,s videos below, which are a little less in depth. Instax is incredibly popular among social media bloggers/vloggers so probably the biggest misstep Fujifilm made with the Instax SQ10 was excluding wifi connectivity for Instagram. Read More »
