Fujifilm GFX50S: Great Glass, Great Travel Camera, Great Studio Camera

It’s been a while since I rounded up all the GFX posts in one place and some sites like The Last Word have done a lot of technical testing during that time. The Last Word has confirmed that Fujinon 32-64mm is a world class zoom and that the Fujinon GF 120mm and GF 110mm are equivalent optically so Fujifilm is making good on their promise to overbuild GF lenses for the sensors of tomorrow. Similarly, the FujinonGF 23mm does incredibly well in testing. Lewis Von John is also back and traveling around the West coast of America shooting along with a variety of other regulars. It feels like the Fujifilm GFX is growing up fast and I can’t wait for the next round of lens announcements.

Fringer Firmware 2.1 Adds Contax 55/3.5 and 210/4 Support

Fringer expanded the compatibility of their AF adapter to support Contax 55/3.5 and 210/4, with Contax 45-90 and 350/4 to be added in the future. You can download the update here if you already have an adapter or you can buy an adapter here. The reason for the addition of more lenses according to Fringer is

“I was conservative on AF performance of adapted Contax 645 lenses on CDAF bodies like GFX. However, more and more in field tests made me believe that the AF performance actually is quite good in most cases. And one more option for users should always be better. That’s why I changed my mind. But please don’t be too optimistic. The AF performance is still lower than GF lenses on GFX or C645 lenses on C645 body due to the limitations of the old lens design. Thus, if you find it doesn’t satisfy you, please change to MF. All C645 lens can work under MF mode. And their super fine MF rings are way better than GF lenses’.” – Fringer

But I can’t help to wonder if this expansion is the result of the Kipon Contax645-EF AF being announced. According to Kipon their adapter has no limitations and should work with every Contax lens so Fringer will have some stiff competition soon if this ends up being the case. Kipon definitely has the resources to develop a superior adapter, but will they fully commit?

Godox vs Nissin and Other Godox Reviews

Godox has been incredibly popular among Fujifilm fans since releasing their system for Fuji cameras. Most of the reviews have been incredibly positive and Godox has over taken Nissin as the top choice among X photographers, due to their reliability and affordable prices. Godox also allows you to update your own flash firmware, which is great when small issues come up.

Fujifilm GFX 50S vs Nikon D850 Estimated by Photons to Photos

Photons to Photos has a good track record of getting their estimate close to right and being completely independent. To most, it is obvious that the GFX will continue to dominate, but if you need data photons to photos is once again out in front comparing the Fujifilm GFX 50S to the new Nikon D850. The GFX is a dynamic range monster and it is going to be a while before a full frame camera catches it and the GFX doesn’t even have BSI yet. Photons to Photos will continue to improve their estimates as time goes on so keep a close eye on their chart here.

Fujifilm Goes to The Moon

Fujifilm posted an article on their tumbler about the Fujinon lens they designed for the lunar orbit satellite Selene.

“The Fujinon lens, specially designed for outer space, heads toward the moon.

Functioning as the “eyes” of the lunar orbit satellite Selene, it will capture the surface of the moon with unprecedented high-resolution images. Everything had to be absolutely perfect before launch; we don’t want to be making repairs in outer space. This lens must endure the impact of take-off, be as lightweight as possible, and withstand radiation.

Fujifilm’s optical technology has made this satellite lens a reality.”
