DPReview: Shooting Landscapes on The Fujifilm GFX 50R With Nigel Danson

Nigel Danson was invited to give his opinion about the new Fujifilm GFX 50R in a recent DPReview video. Below are some highlights from the video:

  • Ergonomics
    • Leaking out the ISO dial was a mistake
    • Shouldn’t have left out the 4-way pad
    • It’s a big camera and Fujifilm should add buttons since the camera has space
    • Multiply your focal length by 0.80 to get your effective focal length
  • Handling
    • Hasn’t had much luck shooting the camera handheld for landscapes
    • It’s much easier to grab a camera like the Nikon Z7 to shoot a handheld landscape
    • Without a doubt, the Fujifilm GFX50S beats the Nikon Z7 at image quality, but the Z7 is easier to shoot handheld.
    • He really enjoys shooting with his eye on the left side of the camera
  • Image Quality and More
    • The best quality camera I have ever used
    • Image quality is incredible right up to the edges
    • The lenses are amazing
    • The tonal quality of rocks is incredible and the transition of tonality throughout the sky is really good.
    • Rock detail is amazing and stands out among other similar photos
    • There is very little noise
  • Why Don’t I Own One
    • Price of the body
    • Price of the lenses
    • Nikon lenses are softer at the edges but the change in overall quality is not justifiable
    • Significantly bigger than anything else and the lenses don’t help
    • If you want uncompromised quality the GFX50R is the camera you get
    • If you want to do video etc and want to take 2-3 bodies there are better options like the X-T3
  • Summary
    • Amazing Image Quality
    • Joy to use
    • The rangefinder on the left is great
    • It’s bulky
    • It’s expensive

Fujifilm Savings Sunday

When I posted the additional body deals during the week there were a few that didn’t show a discount except on Adorama. Now Adorama is no longer showing the savings along with the others, so it looks like the Fujifilm X-H1, Fujifilm X-Pro2, Fujifilm X-T20, Fujifilm X-E3, Fujifilm X-T100, and Fujifilm X-A5 have had their base MSRP reduced. Fujifilm intends to remain very competitive about their price point going forward into 2019 and beyond. This is good news for Fujifilm fans because Fujifilm already offered a lot of value for the price before the reductions.

Impossible Project’s Packfilm Kickstarter Was a Success

The Impossible Project was looking to revive packfilm via a Kickstarter and they reached their goal so hopefully we will see some new packfilm soon from impossible project. Amazon and SavePackfilm still have some left, but B&H Photo and Adorama are now sold out. Doc left a msg on the Kickstarter page reading the following.

“Dear all analog souls!

What can I say??? Even after all the impossible projects of my crazy past, these last days have been the most crazy emotional rollercoaster ride I have ever been on!!!

Finally reaching not only the crazy stretch goal of 211.111 but also crossing the unbelievable 2.000 supporters benchmark leaves me nothing but speechless and super proud.

Especially after our fantastic super supporter had to cancel all his fat pledges due to some concerns of his wife (no worries brother, just let us know when the time is right)

Soooooo… With just about 4 hours left, I already cant hold back to start celebrating and together with Uwe we decided to upgrade the Pioneer Card percentage to

11% !!!!

in order to express our endless gratitude. You really deserve it!!!

So – to confirm again- all of you who’s pledge includes a triple 6-pack of One Instant (or more), will receive a very personal One Instant Pioneer card!!! This unique card will qualify them for a LIFETIME 11% discount for all our future One Instant films!!!!!

Because You rock!!!!!!!!!! Thank you again

Doc”

We are glad we could bring some attention to this issue and the 11% lifetime discount sounds fantastic for contributors. I am glad The Impossible Project continues to save discontinued film, but I hope they can bring their prices down a little bit in the future since film has become popular in some circles again.

Fujifilm GFX50R vs GFX50S

Big Head Taco compared the Fujifilm GFX50R and Fujifilm GFX50S. Below are his main points:

  • SLR style vs Range Finder
  • GFX50R is about $1,000 less than GFX50S
  • GFX50S has interchangeable eyecups
  • GFX50R and GFX50S use the same EVF, but the GFX50S EVF is a little bigger
  • GFX50S has a great shutter button like the Fujifilm X-H
  • GFX50R has a dedicated exposure compensation dial
  • GFX50R has a dial around the shutter button instead of the front of the camera
  • GFX50R shutter button is Fujifilm X-Pro like
  • GFX50R has less weight and is thinner, which causes the camera to not be as balanced
  • GFX50S is better for longer/heavier lenses
  • GFX50S has 3-way tilt
  • GFX50R has 2-way tilt
  • GFX50S has a proprietary Hasselblad style strap lug
  • GFX50R has traditional lug-mounts like other Fujifilm cameras
  • GFX50S has a dedicated ISO dial and the GFX50R does not
  • GFX50R buttons are all to the right
  • GFX50S has better input/output placement
  • GFX50R has odd placement for its ports with a 3.5 mic jack on the left, but HDMI on the right
  • GFX50R can’t access the battery with a tripod plate attached
  • GFX50R can have ports blocked at time due to poor layout
  • GFX50S has the play/trash/Autofocus selection control poorly located
  • GFX50R and XE-3 are laid out almost exactly the same
  • GFX50R has an illuminator light
  • GFX50R has Bluetooth
  • GFX50R is easier to take out shooting
  • BHT like bundling both with the GF63mm more than the 45mm
  • BHT would go with the GFX50S if he could only pick one
  • The GFX50S with GF63mm weights about 100g more than the GFX50R, but the GFX50R feels heavier due to weight distribution
  • Looking forward to the GFX100

I am very happy with my Fujifilm GFX50S, but if both were released at the same time I probably would have gone with the Fujifilm GFX50R. If Fujifilm went with a hybrid viewfinder this would be an easy choice for many, but the GFX50R should have at least had a viewfinder equal to the GFX50S’ magnification.

Fujifilm X-T30 Registered

Fujifilm registered the FF180006 that is likely the new Fujifilm X-T30. Nokishita found the newFF180006 registration at bluetooth.com. It has the same Bluetooth as the Fujifilm X-T3 and probably more. We should know more soon.

“Fujifilm’s unpublished camera “FF180006″ has been registered as an overseas certification body. It corresponds to the bluetooth4.2 as well as X-T3.” – Nokishita
