Best Entry Level Mirrorless: Fujifilm X-T200, Sony a6100, Canon EOS M50 Compared

Last time DPRTV posted a best entry-level mirrorless comparison the Fujifilm X-T100 won the majority of categories but lost the overall category. Things have changed this generation and now Fujifilm wins overall in addition to the majority of categories. You can see a summary of the above video below:

Handling

  1. Canon EOS M50 – feels like a nice quality camera and has the best grip
  2. Fujifilm X-T200 – cheap toy-like effect in your hand and should have an AF on button
  3. Sony a6100 – Same old design and it needs to be improved

Displays

  1. Fujifilm X-T200 – Similar EVF to Canon, but fully articulating 16×9 aspect ratio screen is nice
  2. Canon EOS M50 – best EVF and fully articulating screen
  3. Sony a6100 – low resolution and needs a fully articulating screen

Image Quality

  1. Fujifilm X-T200 – easy win even though not the 26MP sensor in their new cameras and they have the best rolling shutter and JPEG
  2. Sony a6100 – Newer sensor than EOS M50 but still rolling shutter issues
  3. Canon EOS M50 – Oldest of the 3 sensors with a slow scan rate

Autofocus

  1. Sony a6100 – Everyone is trying to emulate Sony AF and you get pro-AF in an entry-level camera
  2. Canon EOS M50 – older dual pixel AF system, but very sticky
  3. Fujifilm X-T200 – should be fine for most subjects, but also has a small buffer

Video

  1. Fujifilm X-T200 – 16×9 flippy screen perfect for video recording, but you also get a 3.5 mic jack and USB-C to monitor with
  2. Sony a6100 – very useable 4k and the best AF of the three, but rolling shutter can be an issue and accessories don’t fit well
  3. Canon EOS M50 – good AF, but 4k has a huge crop and you lose dual-pixel AF

Lenses

  1. Fujifilm X-T200 – Best lenses and most available, but not a lot of the third party since Fujifilm makes some kit lenses better than other professional lenses.
  2. Canon EOS M50 – Lots of affordable lenses, but not high quality or third party
  3. Sony a6100 – Lots of great third party lenses and full-frame lenses from Sony, but not many good and affordable lenses.

Overall – there really are no losers

  1. Fujifilm X-T200 – With the X-T100 there were too many issues to give it the win last time, but the problems with X-T100 have been fixed with the X-T200 so it is now their top pick with the most wins from a quality camera and system
  2. Canon EOS M50 – If you’re an entry-level photographer that is going to keep things simple this camera makes sense
  3. Sony a6100 – The AF sells Sony entry-level cameras, but that’s about all you get

Fotodiox PRONTO AF For Manual Focus Lenses

Fotodiox released their PRONTO AF adapter for X-Mount, which originally started as a Tech Art AF adapter, which I have tried and works very well. We should see the Fotodiox Pro PRONTO Autofocus Adapter for X-Mount at B&H Photo, Amazon, and Adorama soon.

Product Highlights:

  • Add autofocus to your Leica M-mount manual focus lenses; Ideal for 50mm and wider focal lengths
  • Improve close focus ability of all supported lenses; super light and compact
  • Further adapt to other lens mounts to increase your autofocus capability
  • Compatible with Fujifilm X-Mount Cameras; Support AF-S & AF-C mode
  • Limited 2-Year Manufacturer Warranty

Add autofocus to your Leica M lenses
A manual lens needs to be focused manually; Think again! The Fotodiox Pro PRONTO adapter brings autofocus to your Leica M-mount lenses. If you want to automatically focus your M-mount lenses on your Fuji X-mount camera just attach it to the PRONTO adapter. For general use, it is recommended that the lens be set to infinity focus allowing autofocus within the entire focusing range of the lens. Half-press the shutter button to activate AF and the PRONTO adapter will focus your lens just like any other AF lens. Performance is optimal with 50mm and wider lenses. Telephoto optics may require coarse manual focusing before use of the adapter for fine tuning via autofocus.

Improve close focus ability
Improve close focusing with the Fotodiox Pro PRONTO adapter by attaching your lens and setting to the closest focus distance possible. This setup will allow you to use the PRONTO adapter as a 4.5mm extension tube with autofocus capabilities that will significantly shorten the minimum focus distance of your lens. The wider the lens, the stronger the effect will be.

Add a second adapter for more lens options
The PRONTO adapter has a Leica M-mount, but the options don’t stop there. With the use of additional adapters you are able to adapt nearly any lens to Leica M, attach to the PRONTO adapter and enable them to be used with autofocus. Not all adapters will work due to size limitations imposed by the motor housing of the PRONTO adapter. Read More »

Competition Comparison: Leica S3 vs Fujifilm GFX100 vs Fujifilm GFX50S vs Fujifilm GFX50R

Fujifilm has often taken inspiration from Leica, but Leica has fallen pretty far behind in recent years and outside of a few unique features their cameras have become more jewelry than groundbreaking. When the original Leica S came out it was a bargain compared to other medium format cameras at the time, but now Fujifilm provides 3 far more affordable options that compete.

Just on the specs alone, I can see why the Fujifilm GFX100 made Leica nervous about releasing the Leica S3 around the time of the launch of the Fujifilm GFX100. It’s hard to justify spending almost 2x as much on a camera with similar or fewer features. Not to mention the obscenely expensive glass, but at least they do have a few leaf shutter lenses for their system, whereas Fujifilm needs an adapter to use Hasselblad leaf shutter lenses.
