DPRTV: The Best Entry-Level Mirrorless APS-C Camera – Fujifilm X-T100 vs. Sony a6000 vs. Canon EOS M50

Chris and Jordan explore the Fujifilm X-T100, Sony a6000, and Canon EOS M50 for DPReview TV and come to an interesting final conclusion.

Design and Aesthetics (Fujifilm feels better and more solid)

  1. Fujifilm X-T100
  2. Canon EOS M50
  3. Sony a6000

Autofocus (All do a great job with AF-S so this is primarily AF-C)

  1. Canon EOS M50
  2. Sony a6000
  3. Fujifilm X-T100

Image Quality (Fujifilm’s color science beats Canon’s regularly now)

  1. Fujifilm X-T100
  2. Canon EOS M50
  3. Sony a6000

Lens Lineup (Fujifilm has the best APS-C glass without adapting glass)

  1. Fujifilm X-T100
  2. Sony a6000
  3. Canon EOS M50

Price (These cameras are at different price points without rebates)

  1. Sony a6000
  2. Fujifilm X-T100 and Canon EOS M50

Video (Fujifilm needs to fix their low-end camera video performance)

  1. Canon EOS M50
  2. Sony a6000
  3. Fujifilm X-T100

Overall winner

  1. Canon EOS M50
  2. Fujifilm X-T100
  3. Sony a6000

Even though the Fujifilm X-T100 did well throughout the competition it seems like DPRTV went a bit out of their way to create some additional categories so they could hand the Canon the win. For instance price… should rebates be taken into consideration? I can be sympathetic about AF being a huge selling point for true beginners that do not understand how to set up their AF and that may never want to but at the same time, Fujifilm controls make it incredibly easy to learn photography.

Maybe DPRTV should have had a double win like they did for the tied pricing… I think a statement like “the Canon EOS M50 is best for beginners that just want to take photos, while the Fujifilm X-T100 is best for beginners that want to learn photography” would be a more accurate and nuanced conclusion. If you assign point values to the ranks then the X-T100 and M50 are tied, while the a6000 falls behind largely due to its age.
