Fujifilm FY2020 Q3 Results: Camera Sales Rebound While Cinema, Broadcast, and Printing Shrinks

Imaging Solutions
In the Imaging Solutions segment, consolidated revenue amounted to ¥218.6 billion (down 17.9% year-over-year).

Consolidated operating income amounted to ¥14.1 billion (down 48.5% year-over-year).

In the photo imaging business, revenue decreased due to the impact of voluntary restraint and cancellation of events resulting from the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, but sales of instant photo systems, which enable users to enjoy on-the-spot printing of photos, increased in the third quarter compared year-over-year. For instant photo systems, we are expanding online sales by using social media to promote a new way of enjoying instax at home. As a result, sales recovered, particularly in Europe and China. Sales were strong for the instax mini Link smartphone printer, and in May 2020 we provided customers with added value and a new way to enjoy the printer by adding the new “Sketch, edit & print” feature to the printer’s dedicated app. The new feature enables users to export sketches and text from photos taken on their smartphones to merge them with other photos and print them. Sales of the instax mini 11 instant camera, launched in March 2020, also achieved a solid increase in sales, and in November 2020, we launched the instax SQUARE SQ1, an entry model compatible with the popular square format film. Also, in April 2020, new personalized features were added to the Year Album, a photo book service, enabling automatic selection and layout of photos according to individual interests and preferences through the use of AI technology. The new features have been well received by users. We will continue communicating to the world the traditional photographic values of “shooting, preserving, displaying, and gifting,” as well as delivering innovative, user-friendly products and services, thereby meeting increasingly diversified customer needs.

In the optical device and electronic imaging business,

In July 2020, we launched the FUJINON Lens GF30mmF3.5 R WR as a new interchangeable lens for the GFX Series, providing a compact wide-angle prime lens that delivers ultra-high resolution. As interchangeable lenses for the X Series, we launched the FUJINON Lens XF50mmF1.0 R WR, a large-diameter mid-telephoto prime lens, in September 2020, and the FUJINON Lens XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR, a ultra-wide angle zoom lens, in November 2020, thereby enhancing the appeal of our products as systems through an extensive lineup of lenses. Going forward, we will continue providing

value-added products and revitalizing the market, along with providing the pleasure of taking photos.
In the optical device field, sales of monitoring zoom lens and integrated surveillance camera were favorable,

but revenue of broadcast and cinema lenses decreased due to the cancellation of sports and events as well as suspended filming of television dramas and movies. Aiming to achieve business growth in this field, we are expanding our business domains and developing innovative products that satisfy the diverse needs of the market, including the development and launch of ultra-short-throw projectors and long-throw security cameras, and the new development of multispectral camera systems.

FujiCast 167 Part 2 Interview With Marketing Manager Andreas Georghiade, R&D, X-S10, GFX100S, and More

Fujicast is back again with part two of their interview with Manager Andreas Georghiades, which is a shorter interview, but you can read the key points below. You can also listen to part one here and read the longer summary.

Ask Andreas Summary:

  • The Fujifilm X-S10 was more expensive at launch than the X-T3 because it was new and X-T3 was on sale since it was an older camera
  • Fujifilm believes there are three people that use their cameras, photographers that like SLRs, photographers that like Rangefinders, and hybrid shooters
  • Right now photographers that want a DSLR style camera that isn’t Full Frame really only have Fujifilm as an option, which is who the X-S10 targets
  • Some photographers find all the dials and buttons on Fujifilm cameras intimidating
  • Also, m43 hasn’t been developed enough to draw in DSLR photographers
  • Fujifilm is making cameras that aren’t for Fujifilm fans they are for DSLR users to move over to Fujifilm
  • If you’re a DSLR shooter that wants a smaller more portable kit the competition isn’t catering to you
  • No idea about an Instax wide printer, but Andrea would love to have one
  • Fujifilm gets input from a variety of sources about what they want to see in a camera
  • Sometimes compromises need to be made like shrinking the GFX100 down into the GFX100S and reducing its price by 40%
  • If they added something like the larger higher MP EVF into the GFX100S it would have been a more expensive camera than the price point and size they were targeting
  • It’s unfair to say the X-T4 has the variable angle screen for YouTubers because nonyoutube reviewers marked the camera down for not having one too
  • If you want X-T4 performance in a more photography centric camera you can buy an X-T3
  • It’s impossible to make everyone happy
  • Fujifilm has the people that created the product present the product instead of marketing teams
  • There shouldn’t be additional costs to customers for repairs in Europe due to Brexit, but repairs are currently slower since they have to go to Switzerland or similar local, but don’t send it right to Fujifilm Bedford
  • There will be no similar X-Thusiast program for the US because the program is already too big in the UK

New Fujifilm NP-70S Battery Registered Overseas

Nokishita noticed a new battery registered by Fujifilm overseas the NP-70S is 3.6V 680mAh, which is probably an updated NP-70 that was used in cameras in the FinePix line.

Fujifilm’s unreleased battery “NP-70S” has been registered with an overseas certification body. The nominal voltage is 3.6V and the capacity is 680mAh.

Fujicolor PRO400H Professional is Almost Impossible to Find Already

Only one month has passed since we announced the discontinuation of Fujicolor PRO400H Professional and there is almost nothing left outside of a few marked-up rolls on Amazon. When we announced the discontinuation in January there were still quite a few places left to purchase Fujicolor PRO400H, but the remaining stock went quickly and now it is likely that the price will continue to balloon until photographers get their hands on the last few rolls so don’t delay if you find Fujicolor PRO400H Professional and feel you need more. It’s unlikely you will ever see it again.

Viltrox and Fotodiox GFX Macro Extension Tubes

I was looking into buying the official Fujifilm macro extension tubes for the GFX yesterday to do some macro photography work for fun, but now I am leaning towards giving 3rd party adapters a try since I can purchase both for less than the price of one Fujifilm adapter. There isn’t a lot of information around about how well they work with the GFX lens line up.

The Viltorx 18mm and 45mm adapters should match the Fujifilm GFX macro extension tub specs below, but Fotodiox has slightly longer extenders at 20mm and 48mm.

Photons to photos also made their own calculations when Fujifilm’s specs went missing, which you can see here or below. Information about extension tubes hasn’t been very easy to find since they are kind of a niche product, but for $100 they could be a lot of fun and help to make your kit more useful.

Of course, we could calculate this out ourselves using the formula below.

An extension tube increases lens magnification by an amount equal to the extension distance divided by the lens focal length. For example, adding a 25 mm extension tube to a 50 mm lens will give a magnification gain of 0.5X. Therefore, if the lens’s original magnification was 0.15X, then the new magnification will be 0.15X+0.5X=0.65X. The closest focusing distance will also decrease to ~210 mm.
