DPRTV: Fujifilm X-T4 vs Sony a7

DPRTV seeks to answer the ultimate question Sony or Fujifilm. Many photographers that are fans of mirrorless cameras have bounced back and forth between Sony and Fujifilm over the years after leaving Canon or Nikon. Below is a summary of DPRTV’s interpretation of the choice.

  • Usually, we compare full-frame to full-frame, but can you get more useful features for your money by getting a smaller sensor camera
  • The a7III was picked since it has more controls than the a7C and it compares better to the XT4
  • Similar price between X-T4 and a7III
  • The X-T4 has beautiful control dials and you can use it in a classic way
  • The a7 is a small body and they aren’t crazy about the feel of the body
  • Both grips are kind of questionable
  • X-T4 has more robust weather sealing
  • X-T4 has a superior display that fully articulates and EVF to the a7III, but they won’t get in your way on the a7III
  • Fujifilm has improved its autofocus, but the a7III has better subject selection
  • Sony a7C has Real-Time AF that wipes the floor with the X-T4, but it’s not on the a7III
  • Tracking AF on the X-T4 is better than the a7III but the a7III has better face/eye-tracking
  • Sony has better high ISO and shadow information, but the X-T4 has a resolution advantage and the X-T4 has one of the best APS-C sensors on the market
  • Fujifilm has superior JPEG quality thanks to its film simulations
  • Sony a7III has a slight advantage if you’re processing RAW files
  • The Fujifilm X-T4 has a much faster readout speed and it gives you less rolling shutter and makes electronic shutter more useful
  • Both cameras have similar mechanical shutters, but the X-T4 can shoot at up to 30fps with crop
  • Fujifilm X-T4 destroys the Sony a7III for video quality
  • X-T4 doesn’t have a headphone jack without an adapter, but it does have a tally lamp that the a7III does not
  • The Sony a7III is known to overheat, but the X-T4 only overheats at 4k60p
  • Sony video autofocus is superior to Fujifilms
  • Fujifilm is the better overall video package
  • Sony has a larger lens selection thanks to third party glass, but Fujifilm has the most extensive lineup of APS-C and the prices are good so there isn’t incentive to compete with them
  • You can pay less to get similar bokeh on a full-frame sensor so Sony has a bokeh advantage
  • Fujifilm X-T4 is a much better-looking camera with a better shooting experience
  • No one looks at an a7III and says many I want to own one of those
  • The Sony Z battery is fantastic and the new Fujifilm NP-W235 battery is great too
  • Fujifilm X-T4 has superior IBIS to the Sony a7III, but a7III has fewer bugs during the video in select situations
  • Fujifilm X-T4 wins most categories, but it is the top of the line X-Mount
  • Ultimately it is up to the people and both sides are passionate

Fujifilm X-Pro3, X-T30, X100V Firmware Updates Coming Early?

I was contacted by a reader about B&H Photo sending out a notice that firmware 1.20 for the Fujifilm X-Pro3 is available, but it looks like this email went out early. Firmware updates for the Fujifilm X100V, X-T30, and X-Pro3 are expected, but not until the end of February, so maybe the X-Pro3 update and more will be released early, or it could just be a mistake on B&H photo’s behalf? Thanks for the heads up Jack.

New Wasabi Power NP-W235 Savings For GFX100S and X-T4

You can now Save up to 23% on Wasabi Power NP-W235 batteries for the Fujifilm X-T4 and GFX100S. These are the generic batteries that I use for my X-T4 and this is the lowest price I have seen them for yet. I also really like the above third party charger, but it is a little light without the batteries inserted.
