WANDRD ROAM Sling Now Available Directly and First Hand Account

The WANDRD ROAM Sling was announced on Kickstarter about a month ago and it was a great success. Now you can order them directly from WANDRD here.

WANDRD was kind enough to send me a 9L that is pretty close to the final design and I have been using it on and off try to capture lightning on my beach and it is a nice little bag. It is very well thought out, but I wish there was a bag above the 9L since it will not fit my GFX100 with a lens attached, but it should just barely fit the GFX100S. I can’t test the GFX100S in the bag since I don’t have access to one, but my Fujifilm X-T4 fits extremely well along with two large lenses or three lenses of various sizes.

The bag is comfortable, but not as comfortable as I find the backpack. The main reason is that the backpack can be locked down tight to your body using the straps, but the ROAM always has a bit of play no matter how tight I try to make the bag on my back. The give allows the bag to be slid around the body for easy access, but I wish it could fit more snuggly for running and being active with equipment.

The ROAM is very well thought out, but I think the 9L is going to be the best option for most photographers while the 6L and 3L are probably best for casual use. The bag has some utility hooks for carrying additional items, but I wish the strap had a good cellphone holder that is easy to access. Beyond the lack of easy access to a cellphone, the tripod sleeve is a bit limiting and could be replaced with some of WANDRD’s adjustable straps or maybe they could design a way to use the utility hooks with a tripod. I will try to take some pictures of how cameras fit in the bag soon, but the above example photos are pretty accurate.

What I like

  • Comfortable
  • Ergonomic
  • Build Quality
  • Materials
  • Zippers
  • Durability

What Could Use Improvement

  • Cellphone access
  • Tripod holder
  • Could fit more snuggly

Update: we have already made significant adjustments to the shoulder strap to fix the tightening, securing, and quick-adjust issues that the beta sample had. We added a new adjustment point at the bottom of the strap and implemented a “roll and velcro” webbing management system on both the top and bottom of the strap that help with securing the bag in place.

DPRTV: Fujifilm’s Best Primes 18mm / 23mm / 35mm

Fujifilm has a lot of great glass and most of the time Fujifilm has an optically excellent copy of a lens that pairs up well with a lens that has a specific character or characteristic. These picks are DPRTV’s and I don’t agree with all of them (XF35mm f/1.4 is a must-own), but they do a pretty good job of making the distinction and explaining their preference. You can read a summary of the review below, but for those that follow DPRTV this is the video where Chris gets injured if you’re interested. We hope he gets well soon, stepping on rebar is no fun, and how I almost broke a Leica M a few years ago.

Fujifilm XF18mm f/1.4 vs XF18mm f/2

  • The f/2 is one of Fujifilm’s oldest lenses
  • The f/2 is a pancake with slow AF and needs to be stopped down to get god image quality
  • The f/1.4 is one of Fujifilm’s best lenses
  • The f/1.4 is optically near perfect and focuses quickly
  • This is an example of the bigger more expensive lens being better

Fujifilm XF23mm f/1.4 vs XF23mm f/2

  • The f/2 is one of the Fujifilm compact wonder primes
  • The f/2 is optically decent wide open and focuses quickly
  • Hard to beat the f/2 for a compact kit
  • The f/1.4 is an older lens with a great manual focus clutch
  • The f/1.4 is very good wide open and better than the f/2 when stopped down to f/2
  • The f/1.4 is a little slow and noisy plus it isn’t weather sealed
  •  The f/2 is the way to go here for a good compact rugged setup

Fujifilm XF35mm f/1.4 vs XF35mm f/2

  • The f/2 is great like the 23mm
  • The f/2 is fast focusing, compact, weather-sealed, and sharp wide open
  • The XC35mm f/2 is the same as the XF, but without weather sealing and it is plastic with different optical coatings
  • The f/1.4 is an older design that is slower and makes some noise, but it is a well-built lens
  • The f/1.4 is ok wide open but not great and even stopped down it is a little soft in the corners
  • The f/1.4 has a lot of character with nice bokeh
  • The f/1.4 has a more vintage look
  • Chris would go with the XF35mm f/2

More expensive isn’t always better but you should know what you are buying.

New Lensbaby Obscura

Lensbaby Obscura 50mm: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama
Lensbaby Obscura 16mm: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Lensbaby, the leader in award-winning creative effect camera lenses, is launching its revolutionary Obscura lens. A camera obscura, ancestor of the photographic camerais a darkened room with a small hole or lens at one side through which an image is projected onto a wall or table opposite the hole. Dating back to the 4th century BCE, this experience is the earliest image projection technique known to the industry.

Lensbaby is hosting a virtual launch party on June 21st where the newest Obscura lens will be revealed. Free tickets are available on Lensbaby’s website.

The Lensbaby Obscura comes in two versions — a 50mm Pinhole/Zone Plate/Pinhole Sieve optic for their Optic Swap System, and a standalone 16mm Pinhole/Zone Plate/Pinhole Sieve pancake lens (though pinholes are not technically lenses) for mirrorless cameras. Read More »
