TTartisan 11mm f/2.8 Coming Soon For Fujifilm GFX

I received an anonymous tip that a TTartisan 11mm f/2.8 is coming to the GFX soon and it should be great for astrophotography. If true it will probably be a fisheye in my opinion, but third-party fast glass is always welcome for the GFX. In fact, I am currently testing the TTartisan 90mm f/1.25 on the GFX with an adapter and it covers the sensor pretty much completely and it is a lot better than other adapted glass I tried over this Milky Way season, but more on that in a later post.

For now, I hope the TTartisan 11mm f/2.8 comes soon and I hope I can get my hands on one because I am very impressed with the TTartisan 90mm f/1.25  so far.

Update: Someone adapted the M-mount 11mm f/2.8 design to the GFX which you can see below which probably lead to the GFX mount lens being produced.

Fujinon XF 18mm f/1.4 vs XF 16mm f/1.4 Concise Comparison and Focus Clutch Thoughts

The Fujinon XF 18mm f/1.4 was an interesting move by Fujifilm and while it is has been universally praised for its resolution it still hasn’t won everyone over that already loved the Fujinon XF 16mm f/1.4. I think the above video by Gajan Balan does a good job of relaying why the XF18 hasn’t won everyone over and it does so in only a few minutes if you skip the intro. Below is what he singles out and my take on his perspective.

  • When this dropped everyone wanted to know what about an updated XF35mm f/1.4
  • The difference is about 4mm when looking at the equivalent focal lengths
  • In practice, the difference feels like more which is probably related to the FOV
  • The XF18mm feels less distorted sometimes when focusing at equivalent distances
  • The perspective of the XF18mm will probably appeal to more people
  • The XF18mm has 3 aspherical elements that really do make the lens sharp corner to corner
  • XF18mm is a little smaller than the XF16mm
  • XF18mm focus ring just spins forever while the XF16mm has a clutch focus system
  • The linear focusing motor in the XF18mm is very fast and noticeably faster than the XF16mm
  • Many regard the XF16mm as being one of the best lenses for X mount because of its quality and unique build
  • The manual focus clutch of the XF16mm makes it easier to shoot video
  • More Fujifilm lenses should have a focusing clutch
  • The XF16mm holds up well against the XF18mm but the XF18mm edges it out just a little it could be negligible
  • You never feel like the XF16mm is lacking image quality
  • XF16mm works incredibly well when you’re not relying on autofocus where it can be a bit unpredictable for video AF
  • If you’re in a dynamic environment then the XF18mm might be the better lens
  • If your primary focus is photography then the XF16mm might be the best option for you
  • The XF16mm will tick all of the boxes for you, but it is worth comparing to the XF18mm

I think the element that is being missed here by some is that buying the new XF18mm is like telling Fujifilm it is ok to not make any more lenses with a focus clutch. Fujifilm hasn’t released a lens with a focus clutch like the XF16mm in a long time and releasing a quasi replacement lens for the XF16mm without the terrific focus clutch of the XF16mm is a huge mistake, because it is the only mirrorless lens that really gives the feel of a classic manual lens in addition to the features of a modern lens.

This feel is important to photographers and videographers that like to manually focus lenses and it will never be matched by a free-floating focus ring without hard stops. I hope Fujifilm hasn’t decided to abandon the focus clutch design, because I have to admit if a competitor decides to make a lineup of lenses with a focus clutch like the XF16mm I will be buying that camera and all of the lenses the minute they are released and it could even convince me to make Fujifilm into my secondary system with several tens of thousands of dollars invested in Fujifilm equipment since X100 launched.

First Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.2 Review Posted

Voigtlander generally makes great mechanical lenses for the price and DC.Watch posted their review of the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.2 the other day. You can read part 1 and part 2 of their review to find out or see the bullet points below:

  • The Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.2 is heavier than the XF35mmF1.4 R and XF35mmF2 R WR
  • The optical system of this lens is a double gauss type consisting of 8 elements in 6 groups or 8-lens style
  • Improved resolution over NOKTON Classic 35mm F1.4, but still soft
  • Lots of character if you like that kind of thing
  • Going from f/1.2 to f/1.4 provides a significant improvement
  • Easier to use from f/2 up
  • There is a considerable improvement in resolution by f/2.8
  • Fairly high gradation reproducibility
  • Straight lines are straight
  • Despite its compact size, it seems that there is no compromise in optical performance
  • Great contrast between light and dark
  • Smooth roll-off of bokeh
  • The bokeh makes the sensor feel larger
  • Some chromatic aberration can be found, but it isn’t beyond fixing
  • Decent for shooting into the sun
  • Nice and compact design
  • The electronics only work with cameras that can communicate with Fujinon MKX lenses
  • The aperture is by the body instead of on the front of the lens so you can get confused sometimes and change the aperture instead of focus
  • Very enjoyable to shoot
  • The 30cm close focus distance is nice
  • Focus peaking works well with this lens

Fringer EF-GFX Update

Fringer EF-GFX smart adapter is still under development. It is expected to be available in October.

The key features includes:

  • Built-in electronic aperture ring simiar to native G mount lenses.
  • Phase detection AF support (GFX100 & GFX100s only) for all tested and optimized lenses. Focus points fully cover the sensor. DSLR like AF experiences.
  • Supports both lens IS and IBIS (not at the same time). Users may choose between them.
  • Built-in LaCA profiles. Support in-camera lateral chromatic aberration correction for all tested and optimized lenses.

Recently we have tested and optimized Sigma 105/1.4 Art. It performs really well on GFX100s. The 44×33 medium frame sensor is fully covered without any problem. It AFs just like on a EF mount DSLR. Please see the following pictures taken by it on GFX100s and Fringer adapter.

Fujifilm Controls 5.6% of The Camera Market Putting Them in Fourth Place Behind Canon, Sony, and Nikon

Nikkei published the latest digital camera global market shares for 2020 and the top brands are:

  1. Canon: 47.9% (+2.5%)
  2. Sony: 22.1% (+1.9%)
  3. Nikon: 13.7% (-4.9%)
  4. Fujifilm: 5.6 % (-0.3%)
  5. Panasonic 4.4% (-0.3%)

Canon, Sony, and Nikon control about 80% of the market with Fujifilm and Panasonic controlling about 10% and others makes controlling about the last 10% of the market. The global disruption of COVID seems to have shaken the camera market up quite a bit and it will be interesting to see how things recover over the years to come.
