Fujifilm is releasing a lot of behind-the-scenes videos to complement its Fujifilm X-H2S launch videos and some of them are quite interesting. Fujifilm is really leaning into the video-centric nature of the Fujifilm X-H2S, but it is also a very capable still photography camera. The specs of the X-H2S are certainly impressive and I can’t wait to get them in a more traditional non-PSAM body. Below I have groups the current behind-the-scenes videos with the final product.

I received an interesting email interpreting the Sony IMX671-AAPH sensor that is inside the Fujifilm X-H2S that might hint at some additional performance that Fujifilm could unlock.

Sony Semiconductor revealed to VARs a public version of Fujifilm’s X-H2s sensor, the IMX671-AAPH. I believe it compares to the version used in the X-H2s with only differences in CFA and phase focus point position.

This sensor is not able to achieve an output frame rate that is in sync with the high readout speed because of bandwidth limitations, but there is enough free time for focusing.

Nevertheless, the X-H2s still does not unlock the full performance of this sensor, and it is possible that in future machines we will see 4K/120fps with full-width supersampling and 6.2K 60fps with OpenGate.

The sensor then supports extended ISO using a multi-frame stack for time-gap-free e-ND, a feature not yet applied on the Fujifilm X-H2s.

I am curious why Fujifilm didn’t fully utilize the performance of the sensor and it makes me curious if Fujifilm’s processor is the limiting factor. If the processor isn’t the limiting factor we could see these features unlocked in a future firmware update, but we will have to wait and see. Either way it is an interesting perspective from a reader. Thank You.
