The FujiCast is back and you can listen too it below or read our summary of this 1hr+ podcast. Most of the good stuff is in the first half of the podcast if you just want to listen to the camera discussion, but the second half is more general discussions except at the end where they talked about firmware.

Fujifilm X-H2, X-H2S, X-Pro4, and X-T5

More traditional dial cameras are coming
The Fujifilm X-H2 will be the first camera to get the 40MP sensor but there won’t be any surprises from the X-H2S design
Fujifilm believes X-H1 failed because it launched at the end of a tech cycle instead of the beginning
Fujifilm X-H1 was the most advanced camera physically at the time, but the internals were not
Fujifilm used to release new cameras with the same sensor and processor every 6 months, but then people expected the new features from the new cameras to be added to the older cameras
Its easier to sell someone a new sensor than new features
It’s unlikely they will do any other cameras with both the high-speed 26MP sensor and 40MP sensor due to the confusion it would cause among most consumers and instead, Fujifilm will cherry-pick which to use
Fujifilm isn’t working on any flashes that they are aware of and Godox offers a good enough system
Fujifilm doesn’t have the resources to do a full flash lineup and others are covering that now
Not sure if we will see an X-Pro4 over the next 12 months, but they are going to make one
Fujifilm X-Pro has been coming every 4 years so maybe Nov/Dec 2023/2024 based on the launch schedule
We will hear about more at the X-Summit in Dec so maybe X-T5, X-E5 or X-Pro4 will be discussed then

Fujifilm X-H2S/X-H2 AF Performance

Fujifilm X-H2S AF performance with the stacked sensor won’t perform like the 40MP sensor
The AF speed is based on the Processor, Sensor, and AF algorithm
Then Fujifilm X-H2S will be faster to focus due to checking all 3 boxes but the X-H2 will only have two
The Fujifilm X-H2 AF will be faster and better than current X cameras though

Firmware Updates

When Fujifilm started there was a lot more to get out of the camera processor and sensor because they were learning
Firmware updates have decreased because they know how to get more out of the processor and sensor from the start now
Fujifilm wants to get away from having people hooked on firmware updates now because they got stuck in a cycle of having to add features

Iridient Developer 3.7 Released With X-H2S Support

Iridient Developer 3.7 has been released with Fujifilm X-H2S support this is a major update and you can download a copy here.

New Features:
- Support added for RAW images from the Canon EOS R7, R10 and R5C.
- Support added for RAW images from the Nikon Z 30.
- Support added for RAW images from the Fujifilm X-H2S.
- Support added for processing Apple ProRAW (DNG) segmented gain map data from the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) and 13 Pro (Max) models.
- Support added for RAW images from the DJI Mini 3 Pro and Mavic 3.
- White balance RGB channel adjustment sliders now use floating point values for more precision, greater adjustment range and easier direct entry of specific channel gain values.
- Support added for additional DNG v1.6 opcode processing.
Improvements:
- Adjusted brightness of thumbnail browser highlighting and sliders to show more clearly on macOS 12 systems.

- Updated to a more recent libraw version (2022-06-07).
Bug Fixes:
- Fixed an issue with Canon APS-C lens correction data not being properly loaded for some lens/body combinations (90D, M50m2, …).

Fujinon XF150-600mmF5.6-8 R WR Design Interview

Fujifilm sat down with Camera Kitamura to talk about the Fujinon XF150-600mmF5.6-8 R WR and I personally can’t wait to receive mine. It sounds like Fujifilm struck a pretty unique balance when designing this lens and I can’t wait to push it to the limit by shooting some color moons that fill the 1800mm frame this lens can capture with a 2xTC. Below you can read some of the key points that were clear in the interview thanks to google auto-translate which is good but not great for viewing these videos. I also included a color moon shot at the bottom.

When the 5th generation sensor was put into development video was going to be a big step up
Fujifilm decided that a Fujinon XF150-600mm f/5.6-8 R LM OIS WR would be a good lens to pair it with the 5th generation sensor
The Fujinon XF18-120mm f/4 LM PZ WR was another lens Fujifilm felt would pair well with the sensor
Fujifilm already had a Fujinon XF100-400mm so they decided the new lens should be 1.5x different
Fujifilm considered making the Fujinon XF150-600mm f/5.6-8 R LM OIS WR faster, but the weight was also a consideration
Most 150-600mm are 2kg and some are 2.8kg and Fujifilm wanted to be about 20% lighter than 2kg and ended up at 1605g
Increasing the aperture speed to f/6.3 at 600mm would have exponentially increased weight and Fujifilm would have ended up stuck at 3kg which was beyond their weight goals
Fujifilm saved 400g by giving up 2/3 stops of light gathering
Fujifilm also had to make sure the lens was built to tight tolerances using the right materials and rigidity to make the lens work well so magnesium was used internally and plastics were used on the surface instead of aluminum
The lens is white to reduce heat transmission since the lenses can be moved around due to temperature changes
Internal zoom was also important because the front element is heavy and it minimizes lens movement
Similarly, the zoom right is weighted to minimize shake while zooming
If you are shooting down or up with a non-internal zoom lens the zoom tends to slip if it is not locked
The internal zoom makes the lens very easy to use
They are using 4 super ED elements to handle chromatic aberration
The Fujinon XF150-600mm f/5.6-8 R LM OIS WR will allow you to capture very beautiful sharp images
Many are surprised with how good this lens actually is
You can even use Fujifilm’s teleconverters with the Fujinon XF150-600mm f/5.6-8 R LM OIS WR which can extend your reach up to 1800mm which matches the Moon perfectly
Fujifilm is trying to match the spatial resolution of 15 line pairs and 45 line pairs with a narrow spatial frequency matching the mtf of medium and 30 size, but Fujifilm is 1.5x higher than 15 and 45 line pairs
The lens is designed for APS-C so the image will be a little different
The lens focuses very quickly with linear motors
The lens has 8 function buttons so you can operate them in any photo position
