Fujifilm France Manager Interview: GFX, Instax, X100, AI, Third Party Lenses, and More

Phototrend interviewed Frank Bernard, director of the photo division at Fujifilm France about the company’s strategies and ambitions. You can check out bullet points from the translated interview below:

  • Fujifilm is well-positioned for digital and analog snapshot photography
  • GFX100 II and the tilt-shift lenses have been well-received and so were the X-H2, X-H2S, X-S20, and X-T5
  • It’s good the Fujifilm AF can now meet the needs of sports professionals even on the GFX100 II
  • GFX100 II is capable of performing all professional video needs
  • X-H2S is gaining market share but it will need time
  • Fujifilm wants to surround full frame cameras with their APS-C and Medium Format GFX offerings
  • There were other companies making medium format cameras, but the GFX surprised them and consumed the small medium format market and now it is slowly growing that same market
  • Fujifilm will exploit the niche of medium format cameras as much as they can because they believe large sensors should be an alternative to full frame for professionals
  • In France, Fujifilm is on top of the hybrid market they are targeting with 26% of the market over the last 12 months and they consider their flagship camera to be the X-T5 followed by the X-T30II, and X-S20
  • Fujifilm thinks smartphones can be used to accelerate demand for stand-alone cameras even though the collapse of the compact market due to cell phone cameras hurt them
  • Fujifilm isn’t sure that the Instax Pal will catch on, but we will see around the holiday shopping season
  • Fujifilm is a leader in snapshots and portable printers thanks to Instax with Instax Mini 12 being their top camera today
  • The Instax Mini Evo comes in 3rd for the snapshot market
  • X100V demand remains very strong and they aren’t ready to talk about another camera at this time
  • Fujifilm didn’t see the X100V demand coming so it was disruptive, but welcome of course
  • The interview makes it sound like the demand for the X100V has delayed the release of a new camera since the X100V is now 3 years old and Fujifilm has faster refresh cycles typically.
  • Fujifilm is open to rethinking the entry-level market, but if demand is low they will stop production of cameras like the X-T200 and X-E4
  • Fujifilm has been headed toward the high-end market for 5 years now and it is not likely they will return to entry-level products
  • There should be a successor to the X-T30 though
  • One way they can support the entry-level camera market is by producing older cameras at lower prices
  • The Full-frame 36×24 market is the product of marketing and it is greatly overrated
  • Fujifilm doesn’t oppose or push third-party optics and they believe they make the best lenses for their cameras, but they are neutral to third parties what matters is that photographers are happy
  • Doesnt know much about how AI will be used in Fujifilm cameras, but wouldn’t be surprised if it was.

LensTips: Fujinon XF8mm f/3.5 R WR Review – You Will Enjoy It Immensely

Fujinon XF8mm f/3.5: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Lenstips published its full Fujinon XF8mm f/3.5 review here which you can read in full or you can check out the excerpt below:

Pros:

    • solid barrel mostly made of metal and weather-sealed,
    • very good image quality in the frame centre,
    • sensible image quality on the edge of the frame,
    • negligible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
    • good correction of lateral chromatic aberration,
    • lack of any noticeable problems with spherical aberration,
    • fast and accurate autofocus.

Cons:

    • huge distortion level on RAW files,
    • significant vignetting on RAW files.
The Fujinon XF 8 mm f/3.5 R WR is a small, lightweight lens with angles of view exceeding 120 deg. An ideal? Not really. One thing is missing – a more affordable price. Currently, you have to pay almost $800 for it, a bit too much in my humble opinion. After all it’s just a prime with an averagely fast aperture. Still, if you decide to buy this lens I am sure you will enjoy it immensely.

Voigtlander NOKTON 50mm f/1.2 Now Available For Preorder

The Voigtlander NOKTON 50mm f/1.2 was announced a while ago, but preorders just started over at B&H Photo.

Features
The NOKTON 50mm F1.2 X Mount is a F1.2 large aperture manual focus medium telephoto lens. It has an angle of view equivalent to 75mm in full-frame format, and has a large aperture of F1.2 based on the Sonnar-type lens configuration, which has an asymmetrical front and back aperture. Despite the adoption of a spherical lens and the extension of all groups, it is compact and easy to handle, with an overall length of 49.0mm and a weight of 290g. This lens produces large bokeh when the aperture is wide open, and by stopping down the aperture several stops, it delivers sharp descriptive power.

Main features

Exclusively designed for Fujifilm X mount
Equipped with an optical system optimized for the image sensor of the Fujifilm X system camera. High resolution is maintained to the image periphery without relying on the camera’s optical correction function, and phenomena such as color cast are also suppressed.

Information communication with the body by electronic contact
Equipped with electronic contacts for highly reliable electrical communication between the lens and body. In addition to Exif information, focus check, and shooting distance linked display, certain models also support in-body image stabilization and parallax correction through the combination of a body that supports telecommunications and the latest firmware (*1).

Manual focus for reliable focus operation
The use of an all-metal helicoid unit that has been processed and adjusted with high precision and high-quality grease that produces just the right amount of torque enables focusing with a smooth operating feel. It enables fine focus adjustment.

Beautiful bokeh with 12 aperture blades
A 12-blade diaphragm is used to make the hole formed by the diaphragm blades closer to a circle. Out-of-focus areas are rendered naturally, and point light sources are not polygonal but softly rounded.

Aperture ring for direct mechanical operation
The aperture mechanism uses a mechanism in which the aperture ring is directly connected to the opening and closing of the aperture blades, similar to Voigtlander’s VM mount and mirrorless mount lenses. With a 1/3 step click, you can enjoy the feeling of operating the mechanism directly.

Shortest shooting distance 0.39mT
he shortest shooting distance is 0.39m when all lens groups are extended. With the close-up effect, you can get an even greater amount of bokeh than when shooting a distant view, expanding the possibilities of shooting that make the most of the bokeh at maximum aperture.

*1 Precautions regarding electronic communication compatible bodies
This product is equipped with electronic contacts, but there are restrictions on the bodies that can be used for electronic communication. Please check the body list below. (April 2023 survey)
