DA: Fujinon GF55mm f/1.7 R WR – Fujifilm’s Best Lens

Dustin Abbot published his Fujinon GF55mm f/1.7 lens review. You can watch the full review above or you can check out the key points below:

  • Great Focal length with amazing optics and good autofocus
  • 44mm equivalent focal length
  • Great walk around lens that most people will leave on the camera
  • Clicked aperture that is in 1/3rd stops
  • Weather-sealed like all other GF lenses it also has a fluorine coating on the front
  • Almost identical to the 80mm f/1.7
  • About 15g lighter than the 80mm at 780g
  • 77mm front filter threads
  • Should have declicked the aperture for the GFX100II video features
  • Big manual focus ring that moves nicely
  • Included lens hood is pretty nice with a locking mechanism
  • 11-bladed aperture that provides better bokeh as you stop down compared to Fujifilm’s usual 9 blades
  • Improved over the 80mm you can focus down to 50cm or 1.6 feet with a 1.7x magnification
  • DC focus motors instead of linear ones which is disappointing
  • It seems Fujifilm has problems using linear motors with their large aperture lenses
  • This makes autofocus loud and scratchy sounding which limits the lenses used for video
  • AF is really good
  • Fujifilm’s AF system is still having trouble focusing on the eye over the eyelashes
  • AF isn’t fast enough for animals, but it is decent for things like shooting layups which gave about an 80% hit rate
  • AF was good in low light even at 12,800
  • Video AF is a bit rough with some pulsing
  • Autofocus has room for improvement but it is better than the 80mm
  • Many of the strengths of the 80mm f/1.7 with fewer weaknesses
  • Mild barrel distortion with vignetting that requires 3 stops of correction to completely remove, but there is no LoCA and no color  fringing
  • Extremely sharp and high contrast even wide open in the center with strong detail into the corners especially compared to the 80mm f/1.7
  • If you stop down to f/2 there is very little improvement same with f/2.8 and f/4
  • Image quality peaks at f/5.6 and diffraction ruins the image by f/22
  • Beautiful colors that are not over-saturated but still manage to be rich
  • Great transition between in-focus and out-of-focus at all distances
  • Some chroma smearing toward the corners if you shoot something like Astro
  • This is the best lens Fujifilm makes
  • Expensive but no more expensive than good full frame glass

OL: TTartisan 27mm f/2.8 Review – Great If You Get A Good Lens

TTartisan 27mm f/2.8: B&H Photo / Amazon

Optical Limits posted its full review of the TTartisan 27mm f/2.8 and you can read the full review here or check out the excerpt below:

The TTArtisan AF 27mm f/2.8 is a case of the proof-is-in-the-pudding rather than in the lab tests. Formally, the lens produced decent results. Namely, images are pretty good at f/2.8 already, and they can be sharp at optimal settings around f/5.6. Image distortions are reasonably low in RAW images and are gone with auto-correction. Lateral CAs are well-controlled. The vignetting is rather extreme and only bearable with auto-correction from f/5.6 onward. It’s a rather slow lens in its focal length class, so shallow depth-of-field photography isn’t its strength to start with. However, even when pushed, the bokeh quality is mediocre at best. There’s also some bokeh fringing (LoCAs) at large aperture settings. The lens is also prone to focus shifts (RSA), which isn’t helpful in some scenarios. Sun stars are quite nicely rendered.

Our sample showed a centering issue. While you may argue that this isn’t representative, it should be obvious that quality control costs money, and this is a low-budget lens – thus, expect some significant sample variations.

The mechanical quality of the TTArtisan lens is actually very good. It’s a tightly assembled, all-metal body with smooth controls. It doesn’t come as a surprise, but there’s no weather sealing. The AF speed is quite good, and the stepping motor is pretty quiet. The AF could be more precise, though.

It’s difficult to come to a final conclusion about the TTArtisan AF 27mm f/2.8. If you can get a good sample, it’s a bargain for sure. However, we’d still recommend to consider other options.

Fujifilm X-E4 Prices Are Rising

Fujifilm X-E4:
B&H Photo / Amazon / Moment / Adorama

The Fujifilm X-E4 has been marked as discontinued by retainers for a while and Fujifilm seems to think that entry-level cameras like the X-E4/X-T200 do not have a lot of demand, but now prices are starting to rise. Asobinet reported that prices in China and Japan are about 1.5x the price of a new X-E4 already while US retailers are largely out of stock except for one combo kit on Amazon that is marked up.

If you have a Fujifilm X-E4 there has never been a better time to sell or trade. I personally have never considered the X-E line entry level, but it seems Fujifilm does. In my opinion, the Fujifilm X-E4 is basically a compact X100 without OVF and with the ability to switch lenses. I have always liked the camera and I owned the X-E1, X-E2, and a full spectrum X-E3 over the years alongside my X-T/X-Pro/GFX cameras.
