DA: Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Review – Best For Fujifilms 26MP Sensor

Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Dustin Abbott published his Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD review. You can watch the whole review above or read the summary below:

  • Similar to a 24-105mm f/2.8
  • Well-stabilized and good AF performance
  • Very compelling price point that cost about $500 less than Fujifilm’s 16-55mm f/2.8 lens
  • Sigma has a similar lens the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8
  • Tamron has a larger zoom range than both with better optical quality
  • 4x the zoom range of competitors
  • Better fit for Fujifilm bodies
  • 74.5mm diameter, 119.3m long, and 525g
  • 67mm front filter thread
  • Same design as Sony
  • No aperture ring
  • external zoom so the lens grows a lot
  • The plastic lens hood is well constructed
  • Florine coating on the front element
  • Weather resistant
  • Can focus as close as 19cm on the wide end and 39cm on the telephoto
  • AF is fantastic for stills but not great for video
  • Solid center mid-frame performance the corners become very good by f/5.6, but at 70mm it isn’t very sharp
  • Contrast is also affected at telephoto ranges but is good on the wide end
  • Bokeh is pretty good with circular highlights
  • There can be some business inside the bokeh circles, but it is better than on Sony
  • The 40MP sensor shows the limits of a lens like this, but it is mind-blowing on the 26MP sensor
  • Should be on your list for a jack of all trade zoom
