It’s hard to believe that the Fujifilm GFX launched 5 years ago now when Fujifilm announced the GFX50S and 6 medium format lenses. Since then Fujifilm has launched 4 more bodies along with 13 lenses and a teleconverter. This move silenced a lot of criticism about Fujifilm not having a full-frame camera, which Fujifilm has repeatedly called unnecessary because APS-C is close enough.

The Fujifilm GFX also saw a lot of third-party support right from the start with multiple autofocus lens adapters launching on GFX before X mount. The GFX also convinced lighting manufactures to fully support Fujifilm cameras starting with the GFX. We still haven’t seen third-party autofocus lenses for GFX yet, but I am sure they will come someday soon with how much third-party support X mount has gained.

Overall the Fujifilm GFX represents a great success for Fujifilm if they can keep photographers interested. Photographers are still waiting for a variety of lenses especially tilt-shift, but there are tons of great third-party lenses on the market if you cannot wait. Fujifilm has gone through great lengths to drive down the price of the Fujifilm GFX while providing affordable glass that is well suited for up to 100MP, but many of us have been with GFX from the start.

I can’t wait to see what the years to come to bring, but I hope Fujifilm doesn’t lose its way in the pursuit of growth. Fujifilm occupies a unique portion of the market that is hard for Canon, Nikon, and Sony to target and Fujifilm should preserve that market that has helped it survive and prosper.
