Kipon EF-FX AF V1.18 and EF-GFX AF V1.20 Autofocus Adapter Firmwares Released


Kipon’s website was down recently around when COVID hit, but now it is back and they have a new updated page with some firmware updates for the Kipon EF-FX AF and EF-GFX AF adapters. There is a OSX/Windows updater for the GFX adapter, but the X mount adapter updater is Windows only and does not have release notes.

On the first time a lens installed to our adapter, before you power on the camera,
please confirm following:
(1) Set AF/MF switch to “AF”.
(2) If there is Focus Range Switch, set it to FULL range.
Then power on camera, adapter will do Lens Calibration Procedure.

Which lens need Calibration Procedure?
When power on, adapter will identify the installed lens:
(I) If it is a predefined lens, which parameters are stored inside built-in Lens Database, adapter will use the built-in parameters.
(II)If it is not predefined lens, and it is the first time installed, it will do Lens Calibration Procedure, the result will be stored added to Lens Database.

How Lens Calibration operate?
1. When Power On, if installed lens is not predefined in Lens Database, do calibration.
2. Finding Focus Range (Focus go to Wide, and then Tele side)
3. Finding Aperture Range
4. Store collected data to built-in Lens Database
5. Force Fuji Camera to reboot (on some camera, you may see one short blinking happen on camera LCD)

(3) OIS and IBIS Handling

OIS is the Optical Image Stabilizer in a lens
IBIS is Built-In Image Stabilizer IBIS in Fuji Camera body
Fuji camera allow turning on both OIS and IBIS, it will cause unexpected Image Stabilizer result
Therefore, when connecting to a lens with OIS, please make sure you have turned off Fuji camera body IBIS.

On the other hand, OIS On/Off is controlled by the OIS switch on lens side, ignored the setting of camera menu.
It also means, camera Image Stabilizer menu affect its IBIS only.
