Wex Photographic GFX 50S Hands-On With Sony A7R Size Comparison

Wex Photographic has a general over view of the Fujifilm GFX 50S along with two size comparison shots of the Sony A7R with the GFX. It’s nice to get some perspective of the size of the Fujifilm GFX 50S between these shots and the Nikon D810 shots from the other day.

The Guys at DigitalRev Hands-On With The Fujifilm GFX 50S

DigitalRev go hands-on and they come away impressed. According to them the camera isn’t front heavy and the grip is very nice. They actually place the weight below the Nikon D5 and D800. If you like the feel of a Fujifilm camera than you will love the Fujifilm GFX 50S. They also proclaim that Full Frame video is over thanks to the ultra narrow depth of field when recording video so this is an indication that they aren’t cropping the sensor when recording video.

Fujifilm GFX 50S Interview With Mr. Toshihisa Iida by DPReview

In the Interview with DPReview Mr. Toshihisa Iida states that the difference between full frame and APS-C is too narrow and Fujifilm wanted a major difference in image quality. APS-C can handle the majority of photography needs but for those that want the ultimate image quality medium format is the way to go. Image quality is number one followed by the size and weight of the camera. The biggest challenge when designing this camera was capturing the light as strait as possible. X-Trans wasn’t necessary for this size format and reduces the complexity of the processing without reducing image quality. Of course other lenses can be use on the camera, but they don’t have plans to make adapters until the future. The camera will do “Full HD even not 4k” weird way of saying what it can do… but the depth of field will be very interesting for movies. The Fujifilm GFX 50s is for any photographer that needs high-resolution, wider dynamic range, better low light performance (should be the same). Great for fashion, photographers, portrait or commercial photographers and will be available early next year.

Fujifilm GFX 50S Details and Photos From DC.Watch

images courtesy of DC.Watch

DC.Watch took a ton of new photos of the Fujifilm GFX 50S and some of the more interesting ones are reproduced below in low resolution so if you want to see them in higher resolution visit DC.Watch. The new viewfinder looks absolutely massive and should be competitive with the viewfinder on the Leica SL, which I can’t say enough good things about. You can also clearly see the design similarities with the Fujifilm X-T2 in areas like the dual SD card slot latch, tilt screen latch, handgrip contacts and button layout. The Fujifilm GFX 50S looks like the Leica SL and Fujifilm X-T2 had a love child. On a side note the sync speed might be 1/125, unless the flash is built for the system and 4k video is mentioned, but the translation isn’t clear.

It’s also interesting to note that the top LCD never turns off and the absence of a shutter contributes to sharpness greatly. There is mention of the potential for third party lenses to have a leaf shutter or something like it, but I think this is unlikely unless the system sells enough units to spark interest in development and Fujifilm opens the platform. At the moment Sony is the only company with high sales numbers and a open platform that encouraging the development of these kinds of devices. I would love to see something like the Techart Pro on my Fujifilm X-T2 or an adapter for using Leica S leaf shutter lenses on the Fujifilm GFX 50S.

Newsshooter Covers the Fujifilm GFX 50S

Newsshooter has an interesting video centric interview with Fujifilm about the video capabilities of the Fujifilm GFX 50S. The camera seems quite capable for video, but newsshooters “extrapolates the sensor isn’t capable of 4k because of heat and pipeline issues.” This is a safe assumption since the Hasselblad X1D-50c cannot do 4k, but it appears to be a thinner camera… and in their write up about the interview they say it won’t do 4k, but the Leica S is capable of filming 4k and it’s an older camera, so maybe Fujifilm will surprise us since the representative never confirmed the statement. We know that the X-Processor Pro is capable of 4k, so it’s possible that they could provide crop 4k, if medium format 4k is not possible. Read More »

The Fujifilm GFX 50S Sensor Size Compared

gfxcom
A few sites are trying to explain how the new Fujifilm GFX 50S sensor compares in size to others so I spent some time getting a more representative comparison together within the new GFX mount. The GFX mount photo is a little off center, but the sensors were created at 350dpi and correct to within a hundredth of a millimeter. They were centered together and were 100% correct in size before being made to fit the GFX mount. This is about as correct as you can get on a digital display. I considered creating a file to print, but there are to many variables to take into consideration. Enjoy.
