Fujifilm GFX 50S Roundup

Lewis Von John posted another tutorial light video of his landscape work and The Slanted Lens did a hands-on Fantasy Portrait video that is a mini-review. There are a lot of interesting Fujifilm GFX projects out there right now and I am hopefully Fujifilm will get more cameras out soon. Last I heard there is another large shipment scheduled for next month. Let’s hope the back log gets cleared soon so we can see more amazing work soon.

Fujifilm GFX 50S High ISO Videos

A member of the Fujifilm GFX 50S owners group requested some video from GFX so I shot some over the weekend and last night, which was it was an interesting experience. For starters the GFX is limited to 6400 ISO when recording video and the camera kind of holds your hand if you set shutter speed manually. Also, if you care about audio, you’re going to want an external microphone because the onboard microphone is not very good and picks up all the wrong things, as heard above.

I didn’t color grade the videos, but they seem to grade well. The above video was shot completely manually, but the below videos were shot more casually and are similar to my previous X-Pro2 test videos, which you can see on my Youtube channel. The video is slightly under exposed, but it’s very recoverable and I’ll likely publish the color graded videos later. I just wanted to post some raw semi-automatic video under varied lighting conditions.

I tweaked the audio from the performance videos a little because the default sound was very flat and basically used Final Cut Pro’s default music mixer setting. These videos range from 1600-6400 ISO, but I will try to do some base ISO video in the future, because one thing about the GFX is that as the ISO rises the “medium format” look does taper off.

So far, I would not recommend the GFX as a “video camera”, but it is usable. I will have to try it under different lighting conditions before developing a firmer opinion.

JLBWedding: The Seven Camera Rig

photos courtesy of JLBWedding

JLBWedding made a unique 7 camera Fujifilm X70 rig to create a “bullet time” type effect that is pretty affective at capturing the moment. They tried to trigger the cameras simultaneously wirelessly and via wired connection with varying degrees of success, but even the pictures with a little motion have a pleasing look to them. You can check out the complete post here.

I’d be curious to know if the creator of this rig tried photographing a stop watch with these cameras a few times and then averaging the results. Maybe they could build a more reliably rig by swapping out a few cameras or by putting slower firing cameras towards the outside of the rig. It could be a lot of fun to dial this in if given a budget.

Fujifilm GFX 50S: Potential Issue And No Flash? No Problem!: Updated

Last night I was shooting fire performers on the beach with the Fujigilm GFX 50S just to see if it could and it did well, but I also took a long exposure. I slightly under exposed the 4 minute exposure, because I’m still getting used to shooting this long and when I edited the image I noticed an issue. There appears to be a line in the image. It might be something I did or just pushing a file exposed for this long, but no one has pointed out the issue yet. I hope to do some more testing tonight, but I wanted to share the image and issue I encountered.

Originally I processed the file in Lightroom, but then I decided to try Iridient X-Transformer and it produced a slightly more detailed image than Lightroom. Iridient seems to work very well with the GFX’s bayer sensor, even thought it’s known for having the best X-Trans support. Iridient X-Transformer makes optimized DNG file from Fujifilm’s RAF format, which is why anyone looking to make DNG files for use in programs like Capture one should use Iridient X-Transformer. Programs like Silkypix just aren’t worth using if you care about image quality. DNG is a great RAW format and it’s a shame more companies haven’t adopted it, since it is a universal RAW format that contains a profile.

Morethanwords made a 5 stop mistake that the Fujifilm GFX50S was able to recover from, which you can read more about here. I have mentioned this before, but it happens when you’re starting with a new system and this cameras ability to save you butt is exceptional.

Laroque is lusting after the GFX and sharing samples.
Varis took the Fujifilm GFX to Italy stating that “The GFX has more in common with a regular mirrorless camera than a big studio medium format camera”, which I couldn’t agree with more.

Fujifilm GFX 50S Added to DPReview Studio Test Scene

DPReview added the Fujifilm GFX 50S to their studio test scene today here. While the results are impressive the most impressive results are the ISO invariant test results attached, which show that the GFX can be pushed 4-5 stops without adding noise to the image, which is very impressive. You can see the results here.
