The black Instax SP-3 is now shipping from everywhere. B&H Photo sent out their black shipment the other day and here is a quick pick of my SP-3 and SP-2 side by side. I will do some better photos later, but I thought the size and design differences were interesting. In some ways, the new SP-3 feels more premium, but I really do not like the new film latch on the bottom. The new latch is probably more secure, but it’s almost too difficult to open sometimes. Fujifilm also needs to make printer switching more automated if they want people to keep both printers because switching between square and mini can be frustrating.

Finally, if you’re thinking about a new iMac Pro B&H Photo is a great place to pick one up and save on sales tax. I’m personally waiting for the new Mac Pro sometime next year, but if you are into iMac the new iMac Pro is a very powerful system for the price. I can’t wait to try one out, but my loaded out Mac Pro is still running strong with 3 monitors and I am looking forward to the new modular Mac Pro next year.

If you’re into windows you can save on the New Surfacebook 2 at B&H Photo also. The Surfacebook 2 is a pretty awesome laptop and I just ordered one for an old friend that I will be setting up for Xmas after demoing it in a Microsoft store for photography. I can’t wait to see what Microsoft does with the next iteration of Surface Studio, but I like the Apple ecosystem still for my own daily usage.

Fujifilm Flashes: Bronocolor RFS 2.2F Transceiver and X-Pro F Flashpoint R2 Pro 2.4GHz Transmitter

The Bronocolor RFS 2.2F Transceiver just dropped right after Profoto preorders started so now pretty much everyone that matters is taking Fujifilm seriously. Bronocolor support was actually one of the first of many flash video leaks showing that companies were getting serious about adding support to Fujifilm cameras so this is a great way to close out 2017.

Flashpoint R2 Pro 2.4GHz Transmitter (XPro-F) Pre-orders also started for Godox fans. I will probably pick one of these up when the Godox branded version is released. I want to start picking up some Godox lights, because all of the Fujifilm photographers I know love them. You can see an example below.

RAYQUAL M42 Screw Mount Adapter

Miyamoto Seisakusho releases “M42 lens mount adapter adaptation function (ADJ type)” on December 15 as a new product of the RAYQUAL brand.

M42 Mount adapter for attaching the lens to various bodies. Loose the 5 screws of the lens side mount part and have the adjustment function that can adjust the stop position by rotating the mount part. As a result, it is possible to adjust to a free position, such as allowing the lens index of a screw-in lens whose position is not fixed by individuals to be directly overhead. ” Leica L mount (L39 screw) lens mount adapter ” released in April has the same mechanism.

Two lineups are “M42-SαE.ADJ” (NEX, α7 series, etc.) for Sony E mount, “M42-FX.ADJ” for Fujifilm X mount. The suggested retail price is 16,380 yen including tax.

It comes with a precision screwdriver for adjustment.

Profoto Air Remote TTL-F For Fujifilm Pre-orders Start

There are a lot of good options for lighting for Fujifilm today and some of them are almost as good as Profoto, but there are still professionals that will use nothing but Profoto. I must admit that the Profoto B1‘s have tempted me more than once and now that there is an Air Remote for Fujifilm I just might have to buy some for my Fujifilm GFX. I would also love to get a few Profoto D2‘s for studio work because cameras like the GFX have caused me to really love the studio in a way that I previously didn’t.

Full frame and APS-C just don’t compare to medium format in a studio setting and a camera like the GFX makes you want to throw a ton of light on the subject. I really like the Impact lighting system and a native trigger coming soon is big, but a good plugin light like the Profoto D2 could be a blast to use in the studio now that there is an Air Remote for Fujifilm.

On a side note, I was shooting in the studio last night with my friends and the Fujifilm GFX continued to shine, with the Sony a7RIII performing very well. We kind of play musical cameras at times, but some night’s it’s very hard for me to shoot the Fujifilm GFX because it is so well liked. I still have a lot of editing to do, but check my Instagram and 500px for the photos as I post them.

Luminar 2018 and Aurora HDR 2018 Savings

Luminar 2018 is making a big push this year against Adobe if you haven’t noticed and the software is definitely worth the asking price so if you are in the least bit fed up with Adobe give them a try. I greatly prefer the final images I am getting out of Luminar more often than not now that I am getting more used to doing less work, but it is a different editor.

Pricing:

  • Current users of Luminar may upgrade at a Black Friday price of $49 ($39 with FUJIADDICT Here)

  • New users can purchase Luminar 2018 for $69 ($59 with FUJIADDICT Here)

  • A collection of bonuses will also be included with every purchase.

Bonuses:

  • The Shootkit ebook

  • Preset pack: 20 Festive Texture Presets

  • 500+ Sky overlays for Sky replacement

  • Video tutorial “How to replace Sky in Luminar”

EXTRA Bonus:

  • “Capture: Adventures in Photography” ebook by Simon & Lisa Thomas, the world’s foremost adventure motorcyclists

HDR isn’t necessarily the most popular tool in a photographers toolkit, but sometimes you need it to produce something incredible. When I was assembling my eclipse photos I tried a lot of HDR programs, but Aurora HDR was the only one that did a good job piecing everything together so you could see the moon and eclipse together. I still need to spend time learning to tweak this program, but every other application was confused by the data I through at it from the GFX. Luminar 2018 and Aurora HDR 2018 together are tools I think every photographer should have access too.

Pricing:

  • Current users of Aurora HDR may upgrade at a Special price of $39 ($29 with FUJIADDICT Here)

  • New users can purchase Aurora HDR 2018 for $79 ($69with FUJIADDICT Here)

  • A collection of bonuses will also be included with every purchase.

Bonuses:

  • Deep Dive video tutorial from Trey Ratcliff

  • “How to create realistic HDR images” Ebook

  • 2 Preset Packs – 40 presets! Preset Pack 1 – Winter Vibes. Preset Pack 2 – Wonderland.

DPReview Awards: Fujifilm Runner Up and Godox V860 II Wins

Fujifilm was in the running for multiple awards this year and earned several runners-up spots, while Sony did well. It was a good year for mirrorless cameras, but DPReview has always been a little down on Fujifilm cameras, especially the GFX. Their definition of compact camera is also interesting and the category should have been called fixed lens camera instead, but at least Fujifilm was in the running for multiple categories this year even though they don’t spend big money advertising like other companies do.

It is also great to see Godox recognized for their excellent flashes. Godox just added support for Fujifilm cameras this year and it has helped their brand gain broad recognition among Fujifilm photographers. It is good to see Fujifilm likes them too. You can read the details here.
