Falcon Heavy Launch

The Falcon Heavy launch was a pretty crazy experience that I will not soon forget. I tried to live stream some of it on Facebook Live, but it kept cutting out. I think a few people caught my launch stream, but if you missed my stream I posted a full video here filmed with the Sony a7RIII. Filming in the Florida Sun isn’t easy and I had to stop the lens down to f/32 since I didn’t have an ND filters for the Sony 100-400mm+1.4xTC, but the footage is pretty solid.

For Photography, I decided to frame the rocket in portrait so I could zoom in as much as possible and maintain a roughly 1/3 shot of the rocket going up. I wasn’t sure how big the flame would be coming out of the Falcon Heavy, but I wanted to capture some nice separation. I tried to automate the process as much as possible so I could shoot and film while observing the rocket launch with everyone else since this was the first Falcon Heavy to ever go up. Above you can see the photos all put together as a time-lapse video.

I probably could have used my Fujinon 50-140mm + 2xTC to shoot this launch, because the 4-mile viewing platform is a lot closer than the previous one I watched, but the Fujinon 100-400mm +2xTC gave me more freedom. The 4-mile viewing area isn’t necessarily the best place to photograph the launch from because the tower hides the rocket and it took almost 4 hours to get to the site even though we arrived at the suggested time. Some people arrived extremely early and lined up outside so finding a good spot to shoot from was very difficult. I ended up having to shoot my cameras at just below 7 ft in the air and yes I could still see through the Fujifilm X-T2 viewfinder at least. Read More »

Fujifilm Q2 FY 2018/3: Strong Fujifilm GFX50S, X100F, X-T20, X-E3 Instax and 4k Lens Sales

Fujifilm’s imaging business is doing quite well with strong sales year over year thanks largely to Europe and the United States. Of course, the Fujifilm GFX 50S continues to perform well for them even with the leaks about the upcoming GFX R and GFX 100S. These financial documents represent the least hyped look we can possibly get at the performance of Fujifilm and the companies imaging solutions division sounds like it is thriving in a market where many are wilting.

“Our Imaging Solutions segment recorded revenue of 297.7 billion yen, up 15.6% year-on-year.

In the photo imaging business, sales were strong, particularly in Europe and the United States, for instant photo systems such as the instax series and instax films. The instax SP-3, smartphone printer, which employs a square format, was released in November 2017. It offers a new photo printing method that will boost demand among smartphone users. Wall Decor, Photobook and other value-added printing businesses also enjoyed solid sales.

In the electronic imaging business, revenue increased on strong sales of mirrorless digital camera X Series, including the FUJIFILM X-E3 which was launched in September 2017, the FUJIFILM X-T20 and FUJIFILM X100F, which were launched in February 2017, and the FUJIFILM GFX 50S, a medium format mirrorless digital camera equipped with a large sized sensor, as well as their accompanying interchangeable lenses. Professional photographers and camera enthusiasts have given high praise to our proprietary technology, which produces impressive depictions reproducing brilliant colors that remain vivid in people’s memories, and the extensive line-up of 31 lenses.

In the optical device business, sales increased, reflecting the strong performance of various industrial-use lenses such as those for vehicle cameras and projectors. The MK lens series was also launched, offering a new series of cinema camera lenses designed for the expanding market of online and related types of video recording.

In the Imaging Solutions segment, sales rose and operating income significantly increased largely year-on-year due to a significant rise in electronic imaging sales combined with strong sales in other businesses.”

Cinema 5D: Fujifilm Factory Visit

Cinima5D got an inside look at one of Fujifilm’s factories ahead of the Fujifilm X-H1 launch and their video primarily focused on Fujinon MK lenses and Fujifilm X-T2 bodies. It’s an interesting look inside one of Fujifilm’s factories that compliments a recent Fujifilm Blog post “How Fujifilm Builds Strong, Quality Cameras.” Maybe we will see a similar video in a few weeks for the Fujifilm X-H1 launch since Cinima5D primarily covers video.
