CP+ Fujifilm Kipon Adapters, First Look LAOWA Magic Format Converter, 9mm f/2 Zero-D and Speedmaster 85mm f/1.2 for G Mount

DC.Watch captured first looks of some upcoming Fujifilm accessories at CP+ like the LAOWA Magic Format Converter that allow the use of full frame lens on the GFX at full resolution without vignetting. The Kipon HB-GFX M also looks interesting and will allow Hasselblad V lenses to be used at a closer focal length on the Fujifilm GFX. The Kipon EF-GFX AF adapter will come in April and we already shared some news with the little brother adapters the Kipon EF-FX AF, which is come out the end of March, beginning of April.

Fujifilm X-H1 IBIS Testing, Size Comparison, and More

The Fujifilm X-H1 is now in the hands of many and a few buggy cameras are showing up, but this is normal, while others are experiencing issues with SD cards and batteries. Every manufacturer ships a few defective cameras and Fujifilm has known issues with batteries that are less than the required spec and SD Cards that perform out of spec. Their recommended Lexar 2000X cards can be easily substituted with an equivalent SanDisk Extreme PRO UHS-II card. I know these cards are above the “minimum requirements” but they are the recommended cards. Other camera makers might be more forgiving about the cards they will accept but many of them will write on corrupt sectors and you will lose those photos if you aren’t shooting dual card slot.

As for batteries, it’s fine to use third-party barriers if you do not mind the occasional lockup, but the only way to ensure peak performance is to use Fujifilm NP-W126S batteries. I used third party batteries in my grip and almost never get lockups, but if I were to shoot an event where I couldn’t afford a lockup I would us 3 NP-W126W batteries.

All cameras have their quirks and people that shoot enough run into them and figure out how to deal with the quirks. These aren’t bugs necessarily and sometimes they just represent a company pushing the limit of the technology available today. Fujifilm’s entire X-Trans III line of cameras has these kinds of little “bugs”, but photographers haven’t complained much beyond the few clickbait articles posted about them by bloggers looking for something to complain about.

Fujifilm X-H1 Abuse Continued and Video Testing

More Fujifilm X-H1 abuse, this time in the rain with a Godox XPro andV860II shooting bikes for about an hour. When the Fujifilm X-T2 first came out many were reluctant to get Fujifilm cameras wet and owners were doing some pretty extreme things to prove the durability of their X-T2. Of course, some photographers had problems, the cameras are only weather resistant, but then when the GFX came out many of us didn’t flinch to use our camera in the rain and snow.

While I am not sure about all the sports photographer talk to do with the X-H1 I wouldn’t personally worry about shooting a game for an hour or two with a Fuji X-H1. I have photographed sporting events with my X-T2 and Fujifilm cameras are fast enough to keep up with the action, but I always find myself wanting more buffer. Fujifilm’s lack of buffer depth can make shooting extended action frustrating and lead to missed shots.

With the Fujifilm X-H1, you always have the option to shoot video at a sporting event instead of photos, but the frame grabs of action won’t match stills with higher shutter speeds unless you’re shooting slow motion, but then you’re losing a lot of resolution. The first Fujifilm camera for sports will be the Fujifilm X-T3 when it is announced later this year at Photokina.

The EU Import Duty isn’t The Reason The Fujifilm X-H1 is Limited to 30-minutes

There has been some speculation that the EU import duty, which was imposed on cameras in 2007 is the reason that the Fujifilm X-H1 has a limited record time, but this is highly unlikely. Many things in the EU are taxed and regulated in ways that we aren’t used to in the United States, but the EU import duties for devices that can record video, which varies between 4.9% and 12.5% is complicated.

I won’t get into the politics or an in-depth legal analysis because it is very dry but originally all cameras that could record video were going to have to pay this tax until a compromise was reached. The compromise was that cameras that record less than 30-minutes would avoid the duty, but once they recorded even one minute more at a specified quality or higher they would have to pay the minimum duty. Now a 4.9% duty isn’t bad, but what about 12.5%… Well, 12.5% was only if the device could record from a TV like a VCR, which then leads to some interesting legal arguments. I imagine most companies decided they weren’t worth making and just segmented their product lines as a result, which became more profitable.

Then… in 2016 the EU eliminated import duties on “Television cameras, and video cameras, and their component parts” (Meijburg Tax Law). Could a tax law firm in Europe have incorrect information on their site? I suppose they could, but it’s unlikely the EU is listed on the WTO: Information Technology Agreement. I’m not a lawyer in Europe so I wouldn’t know and have heard that the tax expires in 2018 (Max says 2019) which might be related to the WTO agreement. There have been a lot of free trade agreements over the years and if these companies wanted to get around the tax than they would find a way.

From an engineering and business perspective, it would not make sense to pay the tax if your camera could only record for 45 minutes or so because there would be little benefit to customers. You are better off increasing profits or passing along the savings to customers so you can undercut your competition. This is why I expect to see an unlimited record time in the future when Fujifilm is ready and able to deliver one. Beyond the Fujifilm X-H line of camera, many manufacturers use artificial limits to segment their cameras and the 30-minute limitation will likely remain a useful tool going forward thanks to the EU.

Also, it looks like the Fujiguys are vlogging now…
