Quick Review: Elinchrom Indirect Litemotiv – Part 2

The combination of the Indirect Speedring with the Rotalux 100 creates a convincing daylight effect.

Quick review: Elinchrom Indirect Litemotiv – part 2
Markus continues his quest to adapt different Elinchrom accessories to Godox/Flashpoint lights.

This is part 2. Read part 1 here.

In addition to the Litemotive Indirect lineElinchrom also makes a highly interesting Indirect Speedring, intended for the Rotalux Deep Octa Indirect 150.

Since I already adapted the Indirect 190 as part of my current favorite key lights, the 150 seemed redundant, so I decided to try the Indirect Speedring with the shallow Rotalux 100cm Octabox. Forgoing the white inner diffuser that is part of the official 190 and 150, my rogue combination yields a wonderful, soft and even light, just as I expected. Read More »

DPReview Fujifilm CP+ 2018 Interview

DPReview interviewed some of Fujifilm’s senior managers at CP+. Bellow is a summary of the interview:

  • Fujifilm GFX
    • Fujifilm sold more GFX cameras than they expected.
    • There was also a very high attach rate of GF lenses, which wasn’t expected.
    • Customer feedback about GFX has been very good
    • 80% of GFX users are high-end amateurs and 20% are traditional professionals.
    • Users want long glass for the GFX
    • Users also want the GFX to be faster and Fujifilm is working on that.
    • GFX is usually a second body and adapters are very important to the system.
    • There are over 100 adapters on the market right now for 28 mounts.
    • Fujifilm is focused on prime development right now, but they haven’t forgotten those that want zooms.
  • Fujifilm X-H1
    • Photographers wanted a bigger grip for large lenses like the XF 100-400mm and upcoming XF 200mm.
    • Each customer requires a different camera and if you want minimalist you can get a Fujifilm X-E3.
    • Fujifilm is focused on APS-C, because they think that is the best balance for speed/size/image quality
  • Other
    • Fujifilm is considering a high-end compact to replace the Fujifilm X70
    • Fujifilm has a growing videographer population.
    • Fujifilm’s strength is getting photos straight out of the camera that you can use, they are trying to do the same thing with video and ETERNA with the X-H1.
    • They could improve the AF of the Fujifilm X-T2 so it matches the X-H1.
    • Fujifilm hopes to improve their image quality substantially over the next 18 months.
    • Some improvements will come via firmware update, while others will be hardware.
    • Fujifilm will have faster and more accurate autofocus and will improve video functionality.
    • In the US the high-end market has grown the most.
    • In the Asian market, the X-A has grown the most.
    • Fujifilm has an over 40% market share in Thailand.
    • The Asian market is transitioning from smartphones to the X-A, while the Western is more high-end centric.
    • Fujifilm doesn’t have legacy equipment to deal with, which is a huge advantage over Canon/Nikon.
    • Fujifilm will continue to stand out as a unique camera maker even as Canon and Nikon enter the market, because of their use of analog controls.
  • Instax
    • Fujifilm sees the popularity of Instax as people still valuing print.
    • In Asia using Instax alongside high-end Fujifilm cameras isn’t uncommon and they actually sell them bundled.

Companies like Fujifilm need to find a way to get the western market to start upgrading their smartphones to entry-level ILC cameras like the Asian markets are doing today. The growth of the high-end market in the West is great, but the only way to truly grow the overall market is to get more people interested in traditional forms of photography instead of using their smartphones for good enough images. Fujifilm X-H1: Reviews, 120fps, X-H1 vs A7III, Focus Tracking, And More

There seem to be a lot of mixed opinions about the Fujifilm X-H1 and some of them have come from users that do not know how to use the camera correctly. I have to admit Fujifilm cameras have been getting more complicated and the menus aren’t as simple as they used to be, but they are still fairly logical. Details about when the camera operates in CDAF vs PDAF and if you need to turn off IBIS while using a tripod are somewhat obscured today.

This on top of the recent bugs that some have experienced has lead to some unjustified negative opinions about the Fujifilm X-H1 because photographers aren’t taking the time to tweak settings to maximize their performance. All cameras require tweaking to maximize their performance and I recall severely messing up settings on past Nikon and Canon cameras that I was forced to use in the past.

To be fair I am not defending Fujifilm as much as I am pointing out that the Fujifilm X-H1 is a more Sony-like camera than past Fujifilm cameras. The menus are getting deep and how features play off each other isn’t necessarily intuitive, which is why we are having lockup issue when using flicker reduction and E-Front curtain shutter together.

All of the reviews out there based on mistaken settings and confusion might lead to a future menu system redesign from Fujifilm. It would be interesting if Fujifilm redesigned their menus before Sony did, even though they aren’t very bad.

UK Photography Show 2018 and Adobe Live Stream/Price Hike

The UK Photography Show wasn’t overly exciting this year, but one Fujifilm centric channel did visit the Fujifilm booth above. See if you spot anything… Companies like Adobe live streamed throughout the event on YouTube with various lessons if you want to check them out. Adobe announced a price hike right before the photo show, which is very disappointing after they moved to the cloud

  • Creative Cloud for Individual Single App plans will increase to $20.99 per month from $19.99 per month or $1 per month
  • Creative Cloud for Individual All Apps plans will increase to $52.99 per month from $49.99 per month or $3 per month
  • Creative Cloud for Teams All App plans will increase to $79.99 per month from $69.99 per month or $10 per month

Of course, you can always pick one of the great alternatives out there today.
