Competition: Sony a6400 vs Sony a6500 vs Fujifilm X-T20 vs Fujifilm X-T3 Compared

Sony just announced their new midrange APS-C camera, but it’s really not very impressive. I am sure Sony’s new AF system will be the best on the market, but the new Sony a6400 is just catching up with the soon to be replaced Fujifilm X-T20. Further, the Fujifilm X-T30, which is expected to be released in February, should match many of the Fujifilm X-T3’s specs, which are well beyond the Sony a6400.

Sony has repeatedly emphasized how serious they are about APS-C photography, but we might have to wait for the Sony a7000 or a6700 to be announced for a true competitor. Also, Sony’s complete lack of new high-end APS-C lenses isn’t confidence inspiring. Sony really should have announced some new APS-C glass to go along with the Sony a6400 and upcoming Sony a7000 or a6700.

CamFi Pro Plus: Wireless USB Tethering For 500+ Cameras

Press Release:

Guangdong, CHINA—DECEMBER 18, 2018—CamFi, maker of wireless camera controllers, announced the release of CamFi Pro Plus today. This new product adds the wireless tethering feature for 500+ cameras, including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Pentax and more. All DSLR cameras which support USB tethering can be supported by CamFi Pro Plus.

“This is a big step for tethering technology,” said Mark Ma, the CEO of CamFi Limited. “It will improve the productivity for the professional photographers greatly, without any study cost.” With wireless tethering, there is need for a USB cable to connect the camera and computer. CamFi Pro Plus also allows photographers to keep using familiar tools, such as Capture One, Lightroom, EOS utility, Sony Pixel and so forth, directly via WiFi.

CamFi Pro Plus adds the third party tethering service. It can send USB data to the client device directly through a WiFi connection. When a camera is connected with CamFi Pro Plus, the laptop which connects to it will act as if the USB device plugged into it directly. In tests, the maximum Wi-Fi speed can achieve 10M Bytes/second. For a 20M raw photo, for example, this translates into need only about three seconds to transfer with Capture One.
The third party tethering service of CamFi Pro Plus supports Windows and Mac. The price of CamFi Pro Plus is $339. It can be ordered via CamFi website. All the existing customers of CamFi Pro can order the upgrade service for $40.

Fujifilm GFX50R vs Fujifilm GFX50S vs Hasselblad X1D: Photons to Photos PDR Comparison

Some photographers have wondered if the Fujifilm GFX50R has and advantaged over the Fujifilm GFX50S since it is a more recent camera, but Photons to Photos has laid the debate to rest in their latest testing. The Fujifilm GFX50S slightly edges out the GFX50R at times and it is clearly just behind the Hasselblad X1D, but no one should notice much of a difference between these three cameras. If you want to manipulate the data you can do so here and stay tuned for more GFX news coming soon.

Fujifilm GFX Updates: January Fujinon GF100-200mm F5.6 R LM OIS WR Event? and Will GFX100 be X-Trans Based?

The Fujifilm GFX has been huge for Fujifilm and the rumors have been flying on sites like Weibo in addition to conjecture by other sites being mistaken as rumors. I received a couple of tips today, which are always appreciated, and I want to talk about them since they were numerous. First, there is a GF lens teaser going around Weibo for an event on 1-17-2019, which is a few days from now. FujiAddict is only aware of an event coming around February 14th so this could be a fabrication, but the Fujinon GF100-200mm F5.6 R LM OIS WR could always come earlier.

The other more surprising rumor comes from thephoblographer that made a leap from newly leaked photos of the GFX100 to the GFX100 might be X-Trans based in a recent post. The rumor is based on an interview from a previous thephoblographer post with Fujifilm where Fujifilm didn’t confirm that the Fujifilm GFX100 would have a bayer sensor or deny it being X-Trans based. This leap requires readers to forget the numerous thing Fujifilm has said about X-Trans and medium format. Fujifilm says that medium format does not benefit from X-Trans and that the technology would require too much processing power even with their 50MP sensor.

I am a huge fan of X-Trans technology and would love to see it used on their medium format camera’s, but I doubt this will happen anytime soon since decoding 100MP RAW files will remain computationally prohibitive in the immediate future. Another issue is getting RAW editors to properly decode X-Trans since no one does it perfectly yet. The only way I can see this happen is if Fujifilm drastically changes their RAW file to emulate bayer so that companies like Adobe can use their standard decoder instead of continuing to improve on their current flawed X-Trans decoder. Decoding a 100MP RAW file is going to be computationally demanding, but not like an X-Trans one so an X-Trans GFX100 is almost certainly not going to happen.
