Optical Limits: Fujinon XF16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR

Optical Limites reviewed the Fujinon XF16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR and it was generally well recieved when it was announced and launched. You can see the full review here, but in short this is a general purpose lens with pretty typical compromises, but it ticks a lot of boxes for users like having a constant apeture and weather sealing. So if the Fujinon XF16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR ticket a lot of boxes for you than it might be worth picking up. Bellow is an excerpt from Optical Limites’ conclusion:

Let’s be honest: this is not a lens you’d consider buying because of its outstanding optical performance. Standard zoom lenses are often a challenge to engineer, because they need to combine partially contradicting design goals into a single product. As a result, they are typically full of compromises, which from an end-user’s perspective means they come with what is often perceived as restrictions, limitations, issues or even flaws. The Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR certainly comes with a few compromises of that kind.

Let’s start with the good news: the build quality of the lens is high, despite its extending monocam design and some plastic parts it feels solid and sturdy. The stepping motor provides fast and silent autofocus and the latest generation OIS is impressive. On top, the lens features sealing agains dust and moisture, so should be a reliable travel companion for most environments. Except for the focus, zoom and aperture rings there are no controls on the lens body. Focus mode and OIS can and need to be set via the camera, but a dedicated OIS switch on the lens would come handy occasionally.

With very good to excellent resolution, sharpness is not an issue in the image center. But depending on the focal length, it can be at the image borders and corners. The fact that Fujifilm relies on correcting heavy distortion and vignetting by software instead of optical engineering doesn’t help in this regard, which is especially shown by the border resolution at 16mm. At 80mm, the border and especially corner resolution is so low that it feels like Fujifilm maybe stretched the zoom range of the lens a tad too far.

On a more positive note, the bokeh quality is not outstanding, but certainly above average for a standard zoom.

Argus 0.95 Images From Laowa January 9th Event

Laowa had an event on January 9th where they talked about Argus lenses. I was aware of the event, but all of the materials were in Chinese and I was unsure if they would have any news for Fujifilm at the event so I didn’t want to hype it up. Turns out they announced a bunch of Argus lenses which we leaked first here. The only APSC lens announces at the even was the Laowa Argus CF33mm f/0.95, which you can see above.

They also released a roadmap which you can see below as well as first looks of the Laowa Argus 45mm f/0.95 (Full Frame), Laowa Argus 25mm f/0.95 (m43), Laowa Argus 35mm f/0.95 (Full Frame). I wish we got more than one APSC lens announced at the event, but we should see more in the future. You can find these lenses first directly from Venus Optics Laowa when they start preorders and I expect them to be affordable.

Fujiguys: Fujifilm External Microphone Recommendations

The Fujiguys released a video with tips and recommendations about how to capture high-quality audio with your Fujifilm camera. Below is a summary of the above video recommendations:

  • Options
    • Shotgun Mics
      • Best for when you’re close to the camera and is a good option as an all-around microphone because they are directional
      • If you can only get one get a shotgun mic like the Rode Video Mic Pro
    • Lavalier Mics
    • Settings
      • For Lavalier Mics you need to go under Audio settings, external mic levels should be sent manually to -12db
      • For Shotgun mics like the Rode Video Mic Pro he jus has the mic plugged in and is setting the sound on the mic
      • With the Rode Wireless Go you set it to -12db and on the wireless go set the audio to medium
    • Mixers
      • You can use a mixer like the Saramonic in the video to record two separate channels of audio or a mono track with multiple inputs
