Fujifilm Q1 FY2025 Q&A – Many More Products To Come and The Impact of Tarrifs

Fujifilm released its financial results on August 6th, but the Q&A from the financial results call was only just published, and there is an interesting forward-looking statement in the Q&A that you can read below:

Moderator [M]: Thank you. Next, Ms. Yamazaki from Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities.

Yamazaki [Q]: This is Yamazaki from Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities.

I have one question each on the Imaging and the CDMO business.

First, regarding Imaging, my understanding is that operations in Q1 were very strong. Looking ahead to Q2 and beyond, are there any risks you’re keeping an eye on that you could share with us?

Goto [A]: Goto here. Let me respond.

Yes, Q1 was indeed a very strong quarter for us. The reasons include solid performance from the instax line, WIDE 400, WIDE Evo, and also Link 3, which we launched in the previous fiscal year, all performed well. In April, we launched the mini 41, which has a classic design, and that product also generated solid numbers.

As for digital cameras, the X100VI, an X100 series, and the half-frame X half model are both doing very well, with a significant backlog of orders building up. Demand continues to be strong.

We still have several new products in the pipeline, and we expect the upward trend to continue.

Even if inflation in the U.S. leads to weaker demand or consumer hesitation, we believe there are still plenty of other markets globally where we can absorb that impact. We can shift focus to those areas, and if we do that well, we expect the strong performance to continue through the rest of the year.

Fujifilm was also asked about the impact of tariffs on Fujifilm’s business, and it sounds like Fujifilm has it under control.

Back on May 8, we could only present a very wide estimate for the impact of tariffs: USD140 million, plus or minus USD100 million. That was the best we could do at the time. But in the end, it came in much closer to the lower end of the range. The JPY6 billion figure we landed on equates to about USD40 million, so we were able to bring it down quite close to that lower end. And what’s more, we’ve incorporated that JPY6 billion tariff impact into our full-year forecast without changing our initial plan. In other words, we effectively raised the forecast.

Speaking personally, to be honest, the outlook from here is still very unclear. But if foreign exchange rates stay relatively stable, if geopolitical conflicts don’t worsen, and if inflation in the U.S. remains within a manageable range, then I believe it’s possible for us to exceed the current forecast of JPY331 billion in operating income.

One of the strategies we’re working on, in case inflation in the U.S. pushes prices too high and demand for our products starts to drop, is identifying alternative markets, where else we can drive sales, especially for our Imaging and Medical Systems businesses.

Right now, we’re actively targeting India, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa. These regions are becoming valuable entry points for us, helping us open up new markets and expand the overall pie. That’s how we’re thinking about offsetting any slowdown that might come from a U.S. economic downturn.

Fujifilm Increased Battery Prices By 60% to 65% Thanks To Tariffs

There is another price increase coming from Fujifilm on September 1st, but so far, batteries seem to be getting hit the hardest, with first-party Fujifilm batteries rising from around $60 each to $96 and $99. I checked a number of price tracking websites, and the Fujifilm NP-W235 and Fujifilm NP-W126S could both be found for around $60 before tariffs impacted them. The price of the Fujifilm NP-W235 went up 65% while the Fujifilm NP-W126S went up 60%. Third-party batteries haven’t seen the same level of price increase as Fujifilm, but they are up a little.

Fujifilm X Half Domminated MAP Camera’s Sales For Second Month Straight

Fujifilm X-Half Frame:
B&H Photo / Amazon (Silver / Charcoal / Black) / ShopMoment / Adorama

It seems Asians love the Fujifilm X Half, with it dominating MAP Camera’s sales chart for the second month in a row this July.

The FUJIFILM X half X-HF1, following on from last time, has once again taken the top spot for the second consecutive month, overwhelmingly ahead of the second-place finisher. It’s truly impressive! It had been generating a lot of buzz and interest even before its release. Unfortunately, orders far exceeded the initial stock for the June release, meaning we were unable to provide all pre-orders. The charcoal silver model was particularly popular, with more pre-orders than the black and silver models combined, as we previously reported. While we received a substantial shipment of all colors in July, we still cannot keep up with orders for the charcoal silver model, and we are currently unable to accept orders. Many who want to get their hands on one as soon as possible are switching to the black and silver versions, which are now available. FUJIFILM has a history of experiencing supply shortages and difficulty obtaining many popular models. Will the X half X-HF1 suffer the same fate? Or will the manufacturer be able to maintain its top spot with a renewed effort? We’ll be watching closely to see if the manufacturer can make the same move.

It is interesting to note that the charcoal silver is the top seller with more orders than the black and silver combined.

Fujifilm cameras sold well in July, including the Fujifilm X-M5, X-S20, and X-T5.

Returning to the rankings, we have the FUJIFILM X-M5 in fifth place. While it dropped from third place last time, its popularity remains undiminished. A large shipment arrived in late July and quickly sold out. But here’s some good news: Like other products, we’ve only accepted orders for the number of units available, but something has changed recently. The X-M5 is now listed as “on backorder.” That’s right, we’re now accepting new preorders. This means we can ensure delivery for those who previously couldn’t get their hands on it due to timing issues. It will be interesting to see how this affects its rankings in future rankings. It will also be interesting to see whether it will coexist with, or cannibalize, the X-E5, scheduled for release in August.

Next up in sixth place is Fujifilm, and it’s a surprising one. The X-S20 is back on the rankings after a long time. Upon investigation, I discovered that it hadn’t been back since it tied for seventh place in July 2023. It was released on June 29, 2023. While its sensor is approximately 26.1 megapixels, it boasts the same high-speed image processing engine as the X-T5 and robust video capabilities, creating a buzz even before its release. While many pre-orders were received, the manufacturer quickly announced a supply shortage. Ultimately, it debuted at third place, a disappointing result given the significant buzz it generated. The supply shortage persisted, and the following July, it fell back to seventh place, tied for second place, and by August, it was completely removed from the rankings. It was unable to accept new orders and had completely disappeared from the rankings. This time, it was only available as a kit with the XC15-45mm lens. Many people assumed that production had ceased without notice, as had happened before, so its sudden return was truly surprising. (By the way, the language setting on the body has been changed to two languages, like other models.) In terms of price, it is somewhere between the X-M5 and the higher-end X-T5. It is in the affordable price range for a mid-range camera. It will be interesting to see how it stacks up against the X-E5. It is quite possible that FUJIFILM will rise to the top in the next ranking.
