Fujifilm GFX100 vs Phase One IQ4: The Results Are Surprising

The Fujifilm GFX hit a sweet spot with photographers that made it an incredibly popular option and with the announcement of the GFX100S there is almost no reason to buy a more expensive camera and DPR has proven it by adding the Phase One IQ4 to its studio comparison tool. Of course, DPR flatters the overpriced Phase One by calling it DPR’s new reference camera, but should they? From what I am seeing on an Apple Retina Display and Apple 27-inch monitor pixel peaking around the Phase One IQ4 doesn’t hold its own against the GFX100 and it only beats the GFX50 line and a7RIV with resolution and maybe ISO 50.

I’m honestly kind of surprised because the Phase One sensor is based on the same design as the GFX100 and Sony a7RIV sensor from Sony and both the GFX100 and a7RIV have very similar characteristics, but the IQ4 seems a little soft to my eyes and the high ISO really seems to fall apart in a way that the GFX100 and a7RIV do not. So it might be time for Phase One to bring its prices inline with the rest of the medium format market just like Hasselblad did with the X1D.

Fujifilm X Lab 12: Fujifilm X-E4 Development Part 2

Fujifilm released part two of the interesting XLab that is largely about the X-E4 and how it relates to the X100. You can see part 1 here. Below you can find a summary based on the Japanese google translation tools.

The X100 was Fujifilm’s first flat front camera and the X-E4 now matches it
Concerns about a flat front being hard to hold didn’t disappear until the end
Some people hold the camera with their left hand and attach the right
You hold the X-E4 differently than other cameras
Accessories were made to change how you can hold the camera like the thumb grip or metal grip, which make larger lenses easier to hold
The metal hang grip gives a very sold feel
The thumb rest feels like other third party products
The thumb rest had to be extra thin so you can use the three buttons lined up on the top
You get a Leica like experience without the high costs
X-E4 is the first XE with a tilt screen
The front and back are flat
The screen doesn’t just tilt but flips to take selfies without ruining the design
The accessories had to be designed to not get in the way of the screens articulation
XF27mm f/2.8 was rereleased for the X-E4 with an aperture ring to give an X100 like experience
The X-E4 – XF27mm combo looks good and takes good photos
The size gives you some freedom in how you hold and use the camera
This is a camera you will want to carry around because it is fun
