Fujifilm GFX100S Fixes PDAF Banding

Jim Kasson of the last word was the first to test for PDAF Banding on the GFX100, which we covered here. He has since repeated his banding test on the GFX100S, which you can read here. The good news is that Fujifilm fixed the PDAF banding issue from the GFX100 on the GFX100S

Good news! There appears to be virtually no PDAF banding, and not much banding of any description. However, the 16-bit version doesn’t appear significantly better.

but I wonder if Fujifilm will/did also fix this problem with the original GFX100 via a firmware update. I personally have only encountered it a hand full of times when I was really pushing a low-light photo, but it does happen.

New Fujifilm Announcement Teaser

Fujifilm is teasing an announcement is coming soon. Fujifilm has been very clear in interviews that we should expect more lenses this year in addition to bodies. I think it is also highly likely that we will see the GFX50R and GFX50S updated in someway soon in addition to the GFX100S announcement so maybe more GFX glass to go with them too. We should know soon hopefully.

Fujifilm GFX Perspective Correction Solution Using The Leica 28mm f/2.8 PC Super Angulon R

There are quite a few Leica R adapters on the market and R glass is pretty high-quality so I am not surprised that it covers the GFX sensor pretty well. If you cant find a Leica Wide Angle 28mm f/2.8 PC Super Angulon R the Schneider PC Super-Angulon 28mm f/2.8 should work since the Leica is based on its design. All of the findings above should be accurate for the GFX50S/GFX50R/GFX100/GFX100S. This lens can only shift vertically or horizontally 7-8mm before the vignetting gets too be bad.

Metabones 1.26x Expander for FUJIFILM GFX Preview

Milkyway season just kicked off and I am trying a new adapter this year after enjoying the Magic Format Converter last year and so far I am very impressed with how well the Metabones 1.26x Expander works. I just received it along with a few Nikon lenses from B&H Photo yesterday afternoon before packing my car and my initial impression is that it is a keeper. The Nikon adapter is expensive, but the Canon adapter is reaching difficult to justify if you do not already own a lot of Canon glass. Granted the Canon adapter has autofocus, but that is not useful for Astrophotography.

If you have been a reader of the site for a while you probably know by now I love to shoot the Milkyway and have been doing it for years, but it is not easy to fully utilize a Fujifilm GFX100 for the task, which is why I have turned to various adapters to gain access to faster wide glass than Fujifilm currently has available for GFX. I was going to wait until I had more to share about various lens combinations, but that will take time and there really isn’t much out there about the Metabones 1.26x Expander for Fujifilm GFX, plus a few readers have asked me for recommendations for this season so I figured I would put my initial praise out there with the caveat that there is much more to come during this season so this is not my final verdict, but after 4 hours of shooting, 3 hours of driving, 1 hour of editing and a little sleep I am very impressed.

The only flaw I noticed about the adapter so far is that the Arca-Type Tripod Foot is relatively useless on a GFX100 so this adapter might not be for you if you want to mount something huge on a GFX that doesn’t have a tripod foot of its own. It is an odd oversight, but it should work fine on the GFX50S/GFX50R/GFX100S. I have adapted 12 to 40mm with great success, but it is hard to tell much at night so I will provide more useful samples at a later date. The thing that makes this adapter a must-own for GFX photographers that like to shoot the Milkyway is that it allows you to successfully use a lot of wide glass that might not normally cover the GFX’s sensor.

The Metabones adapter is a great start, but I still hope Fujifilm or a third party will release a native lens in the future that is ideal for astrophotography. China has been killing it with its lenses lately and one of my favorite Milkyway shots from last year on my GFX100 was taken with my Mitakon Zhongyi Speedmaster 85mm f/1.2, which you can see here if you like. Well back to bed for another long night of Milkyway photography in the middle of the everglades.

Fujifilm GFX100 Normal vs Multishot vs Super Resolution and Apple M1 Neural Engine Works!

I previously posted a multi-slot GFX100 comparison along with the original files in this post. I have since uploaded a super-resolution shot to the album which you can view here. Only the pictures with the car in them are complete, but it is interesting to pixel peeping around the image. I have noticed a few worm-type artifacts in the super-resolution image that are not there in the single or multishot image, but the quality is quite good. The images is huge so you can spend a ton of time looking around.

Also of note for some reason, I could not get Adobe Photoshop to export the image in a way that it could be imported into lightroom without going to tiff. The file size would swell to 1.5gb but the image would still import at standard resolution until I saved it to tiff. As for how long it took to do… My 2013 Mac Pro took over 5 minutes while my Macbook Pro M1 took 30 seconds. The Apple M1 continues to show its value to photographers as programs start to utilize the Apple M1’s Neural Engines. I hope to do more testing and comparisons soon.
