Welcoming new members to the Atomos Ninja Family
Melbourne, Australia – 28th April 2021 – Atomos is thrilled to announce that it is expanding the Ninja family, with two exciting new Ninja products and a major update for Ninja V!

Ninja V receives the option for H.265 codec upgrade, Ninja V+ – is built for Apple ProRes RAW 8K productions, and Ninja Stream – 4Kp60 HDR for a high-quality social distancing production environment.

The Ninja V receives H.265 (HEVC)
The original Ninja V, launched in 2018, remains the most popular Atomos product and receives the ability to add the H.265 (HEVC) codec. The 5” 1000nit 10-stop HDR-monitor allows users to accurately monitor and record from either HDMI or SDI. Atomos continues to expand Apple ProRes RAW support on all partner cameras over HDMI and SDI. The Ninja V will continue to receive updates for cameras and additional functionality via AtomX modules whilst remaining at the price of $595.

The popular Ninja V is the workhorse and creative tool of choice for the wider film and pro-video industries and will now benefit from the addition of H.265 workflows, with up to 4Kp60 10-bit 4:2:2 full ‘i’ frame with options for 8-bit at various data rates. Atomos will be adding these features through a simple one-click $99 upgrade from my.atomos.com in May 2021.

DPR: Fujifilm GFX100S Gets The Gold

The Fujifilm GFX100S will likely be sold out for some time with how big the preorders were and DPR seems to agree this is the ultimate image quality camera for a fairly reasonable price. The reduced size weight and price have been a big draw, but I am sticking with the full-size camera myself. You can read the full review here or you can read the main points below:

The most succinct assessment of the GFX 100S is that it’s capable of producing the best image quality under $10,000, at the time of writing. If gaining the extra image quality it offers over full-frame is valuable to you, we suspect you’ll be happy to work around any of the GFX’s shortcomings, relative to less expensive cameras, just as you’re willing to accept the price difference.

Conversely, if you’re wondering about whether the lower-resolution viewfinder or slower AF than the latest full-frame bodies can be justified at this price, then the excellent image quality it offers perhaps isn’t quite as central to your personal list of priorities. Having used the camera extensively, I think both perspectives are valid.

While we were working on this review, our test unit occasionally locked up after shooting images. The images were saved but the battery needed to be pulled before the camera would respond.

In addition, there have been reports of shutter mechanisms failing, to which the company has responded:

‘At the moment, the failure rate of GFX100S for any type of issues is in line with other GFX/X series cameras. With regard to the reports of mechanical shutter failure, we have heard of such incidents, but in a very limited number. We urge our customers to contact our local repair center if they have questions or concerns.’

The camera was reviewed and scored on the assumption that these issues will be addressed – and after hundreds of exposures we haven’t had any shutter problems – but both risks are present at the time of publication.

  • Impressive video capabilities
  • USB charging is convenient
  • Autofocus performance varies significantly between lenses
  • Face/Eye AF not as reliable as its FF rivals
  • AF Tracking not as sticky
  • No tracking AF in video
  • Line-skipped video doesn’t give full sensor low-light performance
  • Comparatively low battery life
  • Viewfinder isn’t very high resolution

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) has announced the mirrorless digital camera “X series” and the instant camera instax “Cheki” at the “iF Design Award” sponsored by iF International Forum Design (Hannover, Germany). We are pleased to announce that products in a wide range of business fields, such as the series and the endoscopic diagnosis support function “CAD EYE ™”, have received the “iF Design Award 2021”.

This time, our 23 products, which are the highest ever, have been awarded, and this is highly evaluated for the design that realizes not only beautiful appearance but also high performance and comfortable operability.

Fujifilm X-E4 Round Up

The Fujifilm X-E4 received a lot of love and hate when it was announced, but it seems most reviewers are coming around to the design. The flat front design and compact nature of the camera without IBIS is very attractive to photographers that love traditional Fujifilm cameras, but it also gets a lot of hate from photographers coming from DSLRs or high-end full feature jack of all trade cameras. Personally, I love that the X-E4 is basically an interchangeable X100 without the OVF, but it would be nice if they released a future X-E camera with the OVF included.

CameraLabs: Instax Mini 40 Review

Instax is still Fujifilm’s bread and butter and this is the first new design they have launched in a while so Gordan from CameraLabs release a short review that you can watch above or read the bullet points:

  • The Instax Mini 40 is fully analog
  • Costs about 75 cents a print for normal size packs
  • Instax Mini prints are about business card sides or 2.4 x 1.4 inches or 62 x 48mm
  • It’s between the mini 11 and 70 in price but you can get a bargain on them
  • Mini 40 has a vintage style
  • The case continues the retro style
  • It has the look of the mini 70/90
  • Mini 40 lacks the greater creative options, exposure range, self times, mode screen, self-timer, mode screen, longer battery life, tripod thread
  • Instax 90 is the most full-featured camera
  • Mini 40 is the Mini 11 with a classic look
  • Optical viewfinder
  • Batteries are good for about 100 shots or 10 packs of film
  • 60mm lens that gives about 34mm on Instax film
  • You can pull out the front barrel to get a close focus mode of 30-50cm
  • This camera is best for relatively close subjects
  • If there is a lot of light the Mini 40 doesn’t have a high enough shutter speed to counter the light
  • Going Instax Square might be a better option for some or even getting an Instax printer
  • The camera is plastic not leather
