Fringer EF Adapter Coming to GFX in The 2nd Half of 2021

Fringer was one of the first companies to release an AF adapter for Fujifilm X series cameras, but they have neglected to release an adapter for the Fujifilm GFX until now. If I were in the market for an AF adapter for the GFX I personally would wait for the Fringer AF adapter to be released because Fringer has a track record of supporting its adapters for years to come with updates that add features and lots of tweaking for lots of glass.

The Fringer EF-GFX adapts EF mount lenses to Fujifilm GFX cameras while keeping auto functions such as AF/AE/EXIF.

Key features include:
– Electronic aperture ring
Keep the same usage as native GF lenses. As GFX100s doesn’t have ISO dial, if an adapter doesn’t have an aperture ring, the camera front dial has to be shared by ISO and aperture settings which isn’t convenient at all.

– Support Phase Detection AF (GFX100 and GFX100s only)
You will get high AF performance as well as supports for AF tracking and Eye AF, etc. only if PDAF is fully supported.

– Support In Body Image Stabilization (GFX100 and GFX100s only)
A lot of very good EF mount lenses don’t have IS function. It would be great to leverage the IBIS function of the camera body.

– Lateral Chromatic Aberration correction (optimized lenses only)
We believe JPGs straight out of camera are very useful. Unfortunately, LaCA may severely affect the quality of them. Unlike the raw file, it isn’t easy to be removed for a JPG. Native GF lenses are all embedded with LaCA correction. Now, our adapter has done the same thing for EF mount lenses.

Please watch the demo video for more details:

Fuji Guys on F-Log and LUT

It took Fujifilm a few years to really dial in their video performance, which only started to get good around the release of the Fujifilm X-T2 with the introduction of F-Log. Since then Fujifilm has added features like RAW video to cameras like the GFX100, which represents the next logical step beyond F-Log, but until it is more widely adopted F-Log will likely remain the standard for most videographers.

If you would like the latest LUT for Fujifilm cameras they are available here Above you can see the Fuji Guys take on the current state of F-Log in Fujifilm cameras and below I have created a summary of the above video:

  • Log footage lets you record very flat image data that is ideal of post-processing giving the maximum flexibility in post
  • Log helps you to get the max dynamic range that the camera can create
  • F-Log is captured in Rec. 2020
  • White balance can be hard to get right with log because the image is so washed out so it is best to dial in white balance manually in advance
  • Fujifilm provides LUT that will help you to quickly turn a log image into a usable Eterna color profile based video
  • Fujifilm’s latest cameras have F-Log assist that will load a profile in to help dial in your capture settings giving you a Rec. 709 preview
  • If you are using an external recorder you can load LUTs onto the recorder
  • There are creative and technical LUTs
  • Most editors allow you to load LUTs
  • Recording with Eterna is the fastest way to make a video, but if the situation is high dynamic range use F-Log

Fujifilm Launches Highly-Sensitive and Rapid Covid-19 Antigen Test

Katherine John – IVD Business Manager, FUJIFILM UK With Rapid Covid-19 Antigen Test Above

Fujifilm Launches Highly-Sensitive and Rapid Covid-19 Antigen Test
Fujifilm has developed a highly sensitive and rapid Covid-19 antigen test kit using its proprietary silver amplification immunochromatography (or lateral flow) method.  This technology, used in the photo-developing process, enhances the sensitivity of test results by detecting the virus at an early stage and with relatively low levels of viral load.

The sensitivity of the Fujifilm antigen test has the potential to reduce both false negatives and false positives, providing a reliable, accurate result even in non-symptomatic and asymptomatic test subjects.  The reduction in false negatives is achieved by the highly sensitive test detecting early stages of infection and those who are asymptomatic, meaning test subjects can immediately self-isolate to protect the wider community.

Whilst a reduction in false negatives helps to prevent further infections, a reduction in false positives also has a significant impact on society.  If a false positive result is received, not only that individual but also a wide circle of family, colleagues, fellow pupils or students and other contacts will be required to isolate.  The economic, educational and social consequences this has is substantial, and as we start to lift lockdown public trust in the testing system will be important to ensure compliance with isolation requirements.

The Fujifilm lateral flow test kit uses nasopharyngeal swab samples which can be performed within the community as well as clinical settings.  This enables a faster result than laboratory tests, with the Fujifilm antigen kits providing results in just 10-13 minutes.  Fujifilm introduced their silver amplification technology for antigen testing in 2011 with the IMMUNO AG analyser (which offers highly sensitive testing for influenza, RS virus and adenovirus) and has now developed the technology to detect the presence of Covid-19.

Our new Covid-19 lateral flow test is fast and simple to use” said Katherine John, IVD Business Manager, FUJIFILM UK.  “As society opens up from lockdown testing will be commonplace not only in healthcare and education, but across many sectors including travel, hospitality, culture, sport and events.  It’s important that the testing solutions available to these industries are reliable and accurate, and our antigen test has proven to be highly sensitive even at relatively low viral load.

Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 APO Size Comparison

Camerasizecomparison added the Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 APO to its comparison database and it is a pretty large lens as you can see. I am kind of surprised because most of the Laowa designs that I own are quite compact in comparison to similar focal length/aperture lenses.

CameraLabs: Fujifilm GFX100S vs GFX100 vs Sony A1

I already did a specs comparison between the GFX100S and Sony a1 here based on the info available at the time. Now Gordon Laing has released a hands-on comparison of the two cameras, which you can watch above or read the summary of below:

  • 4th GFX camera
  • Almost half the price of the GFX100 with essentially the same capabilities
  • Fujifilm GFX 50S is discontinued
  • The Full Frame Sony A1 actually costs more than the GFX100S
  • The big bump from the GFX50S is gone
  • Similar feels similar to a 5D or D800
  • Changing the battery let Fujifilm to move the battery into the grip
  • There is no portrait grip or dual batteries but it is smaller all around and 500g lighter
  • New battery can do about 460 frames so battery life is good but you will want a second battery
  • The EVF is now fixed and smaller than the GFX100, but it is still comparable to other cameras
  • Sony has a more detailed viewfinder, but Fujifilm’s viewfinder doesn’t hold the camera back
  • The main monitor hasn’t changed on the GFX
  • PASM mode dial on the GFX100S which is different than other GFX cameras
  • Can shoot for up to 60 min on the GFX100S
  • 1.8″ eink display that’s like the one on the GFX100 and it can be reversed from white to black
  • GFX100S misses the second einck display of the GFX100
  • GFX100S should have larger controls that are backlit
  • GFX cameras feel like X cameras in the menus
  • UHS-II dual card slots that are fast enough for the 5fps of the GFX
  • 12-bit RAW can be outputted via mini HDMI
  • GFX lenses are great, but there are more lenses for full-frame bodies
  • The 102MP sensor is the selling point of the GFX
  • The IBIS is very useful
  • Could shoot the 45mm f/2.8 with IBIS at 1/10th a second, but without he needs to shoot 1/80th
  • IBIS is also good for video
  • The AF is as fast as other cameras with smaller lenses
  • The GFX feels like using a smaller format camera
  • The standard test chart had to be shot at double the distance since the camera out resolved the test chart filling the frame
  • GFX100S easily out resolves the Sony Alpha 1
  • Both cameras do better with pixel shift and the Alpha 1 can out resolve a single shot of the GFX100S, but if you use multishot with the GFX100S you end up out resolving the Sony and chart again
  • No camera under 10k out resolves the GFX100
  • GFX100 can easily recover color data in the dark by lifting the shadows
  • 4k recording is different on each camera due to how the cameras come up with their 4k from their sensors
  • Motion tracking in video is fine for somewhat static subjects, but the motion isn’t tracked well in video
  • GFX100S is Fujifilm’s most compelling camera to date
  • The GFX100 and GFX100S perform like smaller sensor cameras, but the GFX100S is more portable
  • The GFX100 can be shot casually thanks to its IBIS
  • If you’re into fast sports and wildlife a camera like the Sony A1 might be better
  • GFX only has 12 lenses at this time, but full-frame cameras have numerous choices
  • GFX100S is best for photographers that demand the best quality and it speaks to your heart in a way other cameras do not
  • There will be more videos comparing these cameras soon
