DPRTV: Dream Combos For Portraiture: GFX + GF110mm f/2 and X-S10 + XF56mm f/1.2 or XF90mm f/2

Fujifilm has a lot of great portraiture lenses so it is no surprise that DPRTV picked the Fujifilm X-S10 with XF56mm f/1.2 as being one of the best budge portraiture options on the market alongside the Fujifilm GFX100S with GF110mm f/2 as the premium portrait solution. I think I personally would go with the XF90mm f/2 and GF80mm f/1.7 myself, which is funny because in a way the XF90mm f/2 is more comparable to the clinical nature of the GF110mm f/2 while the GF80mm f/1.7 is more comparable to the XF56mm f/1.2’s character. All 4 are great lenses, but I prefer the character of the bokeh that the GF80mm and XF90mm produce.

Canon, Sony, Panasonic, and Nikon all made the list too, but they received honorable mentions or filled out the middle ground and were sometimes paired with third-party Sigma glass. While Chris and Jordan both agreed about the GFX100S and X-S10. Below is the entire list

Under $1,000
Sony a6100
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary

A little over budget
Sony a6100
Sigma 56mm f/1.4

Still a little over budget
Canon EOS M50 Mark II
Sigma 56mm f/1.4

Under $2000
Fujifilm X-S10
Fujinon XF90mm f/2
or
Fujinon XF56mm f/1.2

Under $3000
Panasonic S5
Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN
or
Sony a7C
Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN

Under $5000
Sony a7R IIIA
Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM
or
Canon EOS R6
Canon RF 85mm f/2
or
Nikon Z7II
Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 S

Under $10000
Canon EOS R5
Canon RF 85mm f/1.2
or
Fujifilm GFX100S
Fujinon GF110mm f/2

No Limit?
Fujifilm GFX100, but GFX100S will do
Alpha?

What’s interesting is in the above list there is a lot of back and forth, but once you get into the range where price doesn’t matter anymore it always comes back to GFX because there is no better system regardless of price unless you want to deal with large format film, but even then you will be giving up a lot of conveniences. In short, if you have the money you can’t go wrong with GFX.

New TTArtisan 40mm f/2.8 Macro

TTArtisan 40mm f/2.8: Amazon

Features

  • Standard Macro Lens: Lightweight and compact, full metal body with weight only 371g. Excelling at close distances, the 40mm f/2.8 from TTartisan is a 80mm-equivalent macro lens (35mm equivalent focal length) for M4/3, providing an all-in-one solution for normal portrait shooting as well as macro photography.
  • 1X Magnification: The TTartisan 40mm f/2.8 offers a 1:1 life-size maximum magnification along with a 17cm minimum focusing distance. Manual focus design, along with focus distance and depth of field scales, aids in precise focusing control.
  • Optical Design: Its optical system consists of 8 elements in 7 groups. Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in a variety of lighting conditions and also contributes to the sleek form factor. An 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
  • Clicked Aperture Ring: The aperture ring is stepped with the right amount of resistance and click, marking on full stops from F/2.8 to F/16. The clicks are very light and just enough to let you know that you’ve changed your aperture setting.
  • Multi-Layer Coating: By reducing the impact of flares and ghosting effects in your pictures while ensuring excellent image quality and contrast from the center to the periphery, it offers crystal clear, sharp image quality.

Fujifilm XF18mm/XF23mm/XF33mm Interview: It’s All About The Resolution And The Future of APS-C (Fujifilm X-H2)

Fujifilm has been overemphasizing the resolution improvements that their second generation XF18mm f/1.4, XF23mm f/1.4, and XF33mm f/1.4 bring to the table in the run-up to the Fujifilm X-H2, which will likely have a 33MP+ sensor in it to shoot 8k. It will be interesting to see which lenses Fujifilm chooses to refresh before the X-H2 reaches us next year, but so far Fujifilm is off to a pretty good start.

The only thing I really do not like about the current lineup of refreshed lenses at this time is they lack Fujifilm’s amazing focus clutch technology that can be found on the original XF16mm f/1.4 and XF23mm f/1.4. I really can’t overemphasize how much I love this feature and will miss it if Fujifilm abandons the technology.

Below you can read a summary of the above-translated interview where you can get an idea of how hard Fujifilm is driving home the improved resolution of these lenses and how it will be needed in the future.

  • The XF33mm f/1.4 and XF23mm f/1.4 are evolutions of the XF18mm f/1.4
  • Megapixels are going to continue to increase so second-generation XF lenses will be ready for the increase
  • The XF33mm f/1.4 and XF23mm f/1.4 fix aberrations and increase resolution
  • Fujifilm used two aspherical elements and three ed elements that reduce aberrations
  • Fujifilm also brought linear motors to these lenses for speed and accuracy
  • Fujifilm improved image quality by improving mechanical and optical design
  • Fujifilm’s second generation of lenses is also dust and drip-proof
  • Lens resolution and the sensor are independent factors
  • Resolution no feels abundant with Fujifilm’s new lenses
  • You should feel that the resolution is clear
  • The XF23mm f/1.4 has a close focus distance of 19cm and if you shoot at that distance the background will be very blurry
  • The XF33mm f/1.4 has very smooth bokeh that is good out to the edge
  • The 2mm difference between the XF35mm f/1.4 and XF33mm f/1.4 won’t make much difference with bokeh when shooting under the same conditions
  • 2mm difference might be a lot to some for fov, but it doesn’t change the picture that much
  • Comparing the XF35mm f/1.4 to the XF33mm f/1.4 it about being well rounded as a whole or clear
  • Fujifilm doesn’t feel the XF35mm f/1.4 and XF33mm f/1.4 should be compared
  • The feel of Fujifilm’s second generation of lenses has been improved so they are very comfortable to use
  • XF23mm is the king of snap lens
