Lightroom Fails Fujifilm Again: Fujifilm X-T5 X-Trans V HR vs Fujifilm X-T30 X-Trans IV

There are a few reports of Fujifilm X-Trans IV being higher image quality than X-Trans V HR, so fujistas did some investigation and discovered that, once again, Lightroom is handling X-Trans files in a questionable way. The image quality of RAW files from the Fujifilm X-T5 is noticeably softer than the X-T30 when opened in Lightroom, but that is not the case when using other RAW editors. Thankfully there are numerous other photo applications on the market that handle X-Trans files, and I have listed some of them below.

Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 PRO XF Now In Stock at B&H Photo

Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 PRO XF: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

The Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 PRO XF is finally in stock at B&H Photo, and you can find them from Amazon retailers with a slightly longer wait. My Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 PRO XF hasn’t left my Fujifilm X-T5 since I purchased it, and it likely won’t until the Air and Sea show comes. I highly recommend this lens and other sites have too because it really is one of a kind and Viltrox is already making it better with a Beta firmware that improves AF, which is already good for a fast f/1.2 lens.

Phototrend: Tamron CP+ 2023 Interview

Phototrend interviewed Tamron’s Marketing Planning Manager, Kota Misawa at CP+ 2023. You can find the untranslated interview here or read the translated excerpts below:

  • The weakening of the yen helped Tamron’s financial performance
  • Tamron also attributes its success to its move to mirrorless lenses that strengthened their lineup
  • They are developing zooms and primes for mirrorless, and there is demand for some mirrorless macro lenses, so Tamron is working to address the demand
  • Tamron tries to meet the needs of users with unique designs
  • There is demand for 24-70mm lenses, but if Tamron released one instead of the 28-75mm it released, then the specs might be too similar to competitors to differentiate
  • The success of the 28-75mm showed Tamron that they could successfully make unique designs if they took into consideration customers’ needs when coming up with them
  • E and Z mounts are practically the same, so it is easy to use the same optical designs, but entirely new software has to be designed, and new integrated circuits are needed, which takes more time
  • Can’t answer when they started working on Z mount
  • Tamron believes they can offer many of their designs on Z mount, but they haven’t decided which yet
  • Tamron announced the 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD for the X mount on Feb. 20th
  • All lenses for X mount are selling very well in fact better than expected, and the lenses were originally designed for E-mount
  • Tamron’s next step is to plan new APS-C lenses for E and X mount
  • APS-C Z mount lenses aren’t selling well, so Tamron isn’t sure if they will bring their APS-C designs to Z mount
  • Tamron now takes video shooters into consideration when designing its lenses which is what the Tamron Lens Utility is for so you can adapt your lenses’ performance
  • Tamron Lens Utility was developed so you can decide how your lens performs
  • Tamron is working to make Tamron Lens Utility for iOS, but it will have to be wireless since iPhone won’t let you use cables
  • Tamron lenses will have to include a wireless chip in the future for updating
  • Tamron built a second factory in Hanoi for their future expansion and to help with geopolitical risks and supply chain issues
  • Tamron makes lenses for automotive, medical, surveillance, and lenses for factory automation and machine vision
  • Tamron is still making DSLR lenses, especially zooms, but they will most likely not design any more DSLR lenses since demand is slowing
  • Updated designs are released based on user feedback, but one future feature that all lenses should have is a port for Tamron Lens Utility
  • As the photography market shrinks more avid photographers make up the masses, and they are expected to demand more high-end lenses, so Tamron will make more high-end offerings like the 35-150mm f/2-2.8
  • Can’t say anything about the 5 new models mentioned in the financial report
  • Kota Misawa’s favorite lens is the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD because Tamron pioneered the hyperzoom followed by the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 since it is practical and lightweight

DPRTV: Fujifilm X-T5 Final Review – The Photographer’s Camera

Fujifilm X-T5 Black:
B&H Photo / Amazon / Moment / Adorama
Fujifilm X-T5 Silver:
B&H Photo / Amazon / Moment / Adorama

DPRTV posted their final review of the Fujifilm X-T5, and not surprisingly, they like the camera a lot for photography.

  • The Fujifilm X-T5 returns to the smaller body of the X-T3 without the articulating screen of the X-T4 with a slightly larger grip
  • Best Handling Fujifilm camera yet
  • The camera is great with long glass
  • The 40MP sensor gives you a lot of resolution to work with, along with Fujifilms great color
  • Excellent low-light performance that is noisier when pixel peeping but pretty clean at similar levels of magnification
  • The extra megapixels are worth the slightly more noisy image
  • The best dynamic range of any of Fujifilms APS-C sensors
  • Not great sensor read-out speeds with the X-T5 being 37ms and the X-T4 being 25ms, and the X-H2S being 6ms
  • If you’re going to shoot in electronic shutter mode then you will get rolling shutter
  • The mechanical shutter moves at 15fps, and it is super stable
  • The mechanical shutter is one of the best on the market because it is quiet and low vibration
  • The punch-in magnifier isn’t great
  • Great face and eye detection for static or slow-moving subjects
  • Pretty good tracking AF that gets better the closer you get to the camera
  • Sometimes the camera’s AF will jump to a busier portion of the frame
  • Sony cameras will give you a slightly better hit rate
  • Video performance is completely different than the X-H2 even though the sensor is the same
  • 4k 30p will record the full with of the sensor, but it is sub-sampled vs. super-sampled in the X-H2
  • 4k 60p will apply a small crop factor
  • There is a 4k HQ mode that uses a 6k portion of the sensor, but there is a massive crop in that suffers from rolling shutter
  • The camera is unstable when recording longer clips, and sometimes there are writing errors
  • Managed to record a 70 min clip at 4k 60p, so overheating isn’t likely the problem
  • If you are going to shoot video, the Fujifilm X-H2 is a better camera for you
  • The classic control aren’t great for video
  • The Fujifilm X-T5 really is the photographer’s camera
  • The Fujifilm X-T5 is great for street shooting, and it is the successor to the X-T3
  • One of the best APS-C cameras for image quality
