PP: Fujifilm Interview – AI AF, X-H2S Firmware 3.0, X-T5, 8k, and More

Petapixel sat down with Yujiro “Yuji” Igarashi (Divisional Manager, Professional Imaging Group, Imaging Solutions Division), Makoto Oishi (Manager, Product Planning Group, Professional Imaging Group, Imaging Solutions Division), and Jun Watanabe (Product Planning Manager, Product Planning Group, Professional Imaging Group, Imaging Solutions Division) from Fujifilm. You can read the full lengthy interview here or check out the bullet point summary below:

  • AI AF algorithm
    • Fujifilm continuously improves its AI-based AF algorithm by growing its training dataset
    • Fujifilm starts with thousands of images that can represent any situation and then they have humans manually label the images
    • Once the tracking is trained it has to be run against thousands more images that a human then double checks what was recognized by the AF system and if something is missed thousands of images relating to what was missed are then used to train the model better
  • Firmware 3.0
    • Firmware 3.0 for the X-H2S has roughly doubled AF speed simply by coding more efficiently
    • Fujifilm strictly matched subject detection results and the AF area to improve AF performance and it increased AF frequency during continuous shooting
    • Fujifilm roughly doubled the speed of their AF algorithm to improve performance
  • X-H2S PDAF AF
    • Fujifilm designed its AF algorithm to work with PDAF which is a first since current AI AF systems focus on 2D information
    • Fujifilm could bring its new algorithm to other fifth-generation cameras based on the same chip as the X-H2S, but it will not be as fast since other fifth-generation cameras do not have stacked sensors
  • Fujifilm X-T5
    • The Fujifilm X-T5 does not have the PDAF AF algorithm
    • The Fujifilm X-T5 did not get a grip because battery life improved to 740 frames which is more than the X-T1 could shoot with a grip and it goes against Fujifilm’s design philosophy of making their cameras as small as possible
    • The ability to have a battery grip would have added 3mm to the height of the camera
    • Fujifilm is considering UI changes related to face/eye detection because users seem to want it in one place with subject tracking
  • 8k Video
    • At this point adding 8k is just to future-proof a camera
  • Electronic shutter vs Mechanical
    • The mechanical shutter can be faster than the electronic one because it does not have to support live view while capturing
  • Subject Recognition Tied to Exposure
    • Fujifilm currently ties exposure to subject recognition with face detection, but it is not supported with animals yet due to the complexity of their color
  • Entry Level Cameras
    • Fujifilm isn’t sure that they can make a compelling entry-level camera below a certain price point
    • Fujifilm doesn’t want to release cameras that smartphones can outperform
  • What’s Next
    • Last year was X-Series cameras and the year before GFX so Fujifilm is heavily invested in both (2023 will be about GFX)
    • Fujifilm is always considering what is lacking from its lineup
    • Fujifilm wants to broaden its cameras utility
  • AI Image Adjustment
    • Some people might want their camera to perform more like a smartphone by manipulating the captured image, but at the same time, it is important to capture a very clean image for editing in post-production.
    • Fujifilm doesn’t think cellphone users want to buy its cameras to do the same thing as their smartphone
    • Film simulations are different because it gives you consistency with past images whereas AI image adjustment can come out different every time
    • Fujifilm doesn’t want you to think of its color as fake color in any way because Fuji color is based on color science
  • Instax
    • The Mini Evo Instax has an X-series look that could attract users to X mount, but there is also a resurgence in film, but in general, there isn’t a lot of cross over
    • Fujifilm still has a very strong connection to analog thanks to Instax and its film stock
    • Some manufacturers are looking into making new film cameras again

DA: Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Review – Best For Fujifilms 26MP Sensor

Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Dustin Abbott published his Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD review. You can watch the whole review above or read the summary below:

  • Similar to a 24-105mm f/2.8
  • Well-stabilized and good AF performance
  • Very compelling price point that cost about $500 less than Fujifilm’s 16-55mm f/2.8 lens
  • Sigma has a similar lens the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8
  • Tamron has a larger zoom range than both with better optical quality
  • 4x the zoom range of competitors
  • Better fit for Fujifilm bodies
  • 74.5mm diameter, 119.3m long, and 525g
  • 67mm front filter thread
  • Same design as Sony
  • No aperture ring
  • external zoom so the lens grows a lot
  • The plastic lens hood is well constructed
  • Florine coating on the front element
  • Weather resistant
  • Can focus as close as 19cm on the wide end and 39cm on the telephoto
  • AF is fantastic for stills but not great for video
  • Solid center mid-frame performance the corners become very good by f/5.6, but at 70mm it isn’t very sharp
  • Contrast is also affected at telephoto ranges but is good on the wide end
  • Bokeh is pretty good with circular highlights
  • There can be some business inside the bokeh circles, but it is better than on Sony
  • The 40MP sensor shows the limits of a lens like this, but it is mind-blowing on the 26MP sensor
  • Should be on your list for a jack of all trade zoom

Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 Coming Between August 21st and 31st

The Federation of Independent Photographers leaked the release date of the Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 Pro XF  on weibo along with a new image that you can see above. Somewhat surprisingly Viltrox China commented on the post but the translation isn’t very useful.

It is reported that the closest focusing distance of the lens is 0.28m, and it has a certain close-up capability, which is equivalent to a full-frame angle of view of about 40.5mm, and a 67mm filter interface.

This should be a very interesting lens and I absolutely love the Viltrox 75mm f/1.2 so I think ill be picking up a Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 Pro XF for my birthday in August. We have been following this lens for a long time so hopefully, it is worth the wait.

Pergear 60mm f/2.8 II Ultra-Macro 2X Magnification Lens

Pergear just announced a new Pergear 60mm f/2.8 II Ultra-Macro 2X Magnification Lens for X-mount. It hasn’t been listed on Amazon (The listing has been updated) yet, but peargear will update the listing soon as they have for their Sony, Canon, and L-mount listings. There is already a review of the lens that you can watch below.

  • APS-C-format Lens: Short telephoto is designed for APS-C-format Fuji X-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 90mm equivalent focal length, providing an all-in-one solution for normal portrait shooting as well as ultra-macro photography.
  • 2X Magnification, Manual Focus: Life-size 2X maximum magnification pairs with a 19.1cm minimum focusing distance to suit working with close-up subjects. Manual focus design, along with focus distance and depth of field scales, aids in precise focusing control.
  • Optical Design: Its optical system consists of 11 elements in 8 groups, including three high refractive index elements that help to control spherical aberrations and reduce distortion in order to realize high sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • Ideal Aperture: Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in a variety of lighting conditions and also contributes to the sleek form factor. A 10-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
  • De-clicked Aperture Ring & Multi-layer Coating The de-clicked aperture ring offers smooth, silent rotation throughout the aperture range, making it ideal for close-range video applications and shooting. The multi-layer coating has been applied to individual elements and reduces flare and ghosting in order to produce greater contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
