Fujifilm Created On Of The Best Kit Lenses Of All Time

Chris and Jordan at Petapixel created a list of the greatest kit lenses of all time and it should surprise no one that the Fujinon 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS is on the list. It is rumored that this lens will be replaced with a Fujinon XF16-50mm F2.8-4.8 R LM WR.

  1. Canon 24-105 f/4 L
  2. Fujinon 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS – I actually have two Fujinon 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS and both are fantastic lenses that are great for beginners or users who do not want to carry more than one lens.
  3. Panasonic 12-60mm f/2.8-4
  4. Nikor 24-70mm f/4 S
  5. Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 – this was one of my first mirrorless lenses and it was a great kit lens paired with the Panasonic GF1 and I still miss having this combo.

It is not a bad list, but I am kind of surprised more m43 kit lenses weren’t on the list, because when m43 came to market most of the kit lens options were pretty great because they help sell users on the system.

MAP Camera December Sales Rankings – The Return of Fujifilm X-T5

Map Camera released their sales ranking for December and the Fujifilm X-T5 has jumped onto the charts with no more than 17 days of sales in December thanks to the production pause that just ended. It will be interesting to see where the Fujifilm X-T5 ends up in the months to come, but Fujifilm’s ability to produce X-T5 cameras at volume might limit its climb. At least Map Camera believes that Fujifilm will return to a top ranking once production is fully sorted out.

Map Camera’s Take

“FUJIFILM X-T5” came in 6th place.
Orders for the X-T5 have been suspended since October 27, 2023, but on December 14, FUJIFILM announced that they would resume accepting orders for the black body.
At the same time, orders for the silver body and black and silver lens kits are scheduled to resume in January 2024. This is the long-awaited news.
It seems like the number of people receiving the items is gradually increasing, and we are now handing them out to those who made reservations and are waiting before orders were stopped.
Once the waiting list is resolved and more products arrive in abundance, there is a good chance that the X-T5 will return to the top of the rankings. I can’t wait for that day.

For those wondering Map Camera is kind of the B&H Photo of Asia and it represents a large portion of Asian camera sales.

Fujifilm X100VI Rumor and More

The first Fujifilm X100VI rumors started showing up on weibo a few days ago but camera beta seems to have the most plausible rumor. First, they state that Fujifilm will be prepared to satisfy the crazy X100 demand we have seen since tiktokers started to rave about the X100 making it into a status symbol for them. It will use the same lens as the X100V, but will not have OIS but it could have IBIS. The camera is expected around February 20th so it will not be long now, and if you want one I would recommend preordering because tiktoker demand could get out of control again.

It is also believed there will be a new XF16-50mm F2.8-4.8 R LM WR announced to replace Fujifilm’s original unweather-sealed kit lens. We could also hear about the Fujifilm X-Pro4 and Fujifilm X-E5 around this time too.

The Fujifilm X100V is still sold out pretty much everywhere, but B&H Photo did recently receive a shipment that sold out before I could post it so it is worth checking if other retailers might be receiving a shipment at this time and don’t forget to check both colors.

The Rise of Chinese AF Lenses

2023 has seen the rise of Chinese AF lenses for mirrorless cameras and the list is impressive, but I wonder if manufacturers will oversaturate the market with options, how many 50mm AF lens options do we need?

-Mingjiang AF56mm F1.8 APS–C, equipped with E/X/Z mount, the first X mount, and priced at only 859.

Sirui Optics AF23/33/56mm F1.2 APSC, equipped with E/X/Z, the first unit is only priced at 1999, and wide-angle and telephoto focal lengths will be launched in 2024.

-Xingyao AF50mm F1.4 APS-C, equipped with E/X/Z mount, the first E mount, priced at only 1399.

Viltrox AF27mm F1.2 Pro APS-C, equipped with X/E/Z mount, initially priced at only 3369.

-Viltrox AF56mm F1.7 APS-C, equipped with X/E/Z mount, is expected to be released in January 2024, and is expected to sell for only about 899.

-Meike AF50mm F1.8 full frame, equipped with Z/E/R mount, the first Z mount, priced at only 899.

-Meike AF55mm F1.4 APS-C, equipped with E/X/Z/R mount, the first X and Z mount, priced at only 1199.

-Yongnuo YN11mm F1.8S DA DSM WL APS-C, equipped with E/X/Z mount, the first E-mount, only priced at 1788.

-Laowa AF10mm F2.8 full frame, equipped with E/Z mount, the 10th anniversary limited edition is only priced at 5498, and the regular version will be released in January 2024 for only 4999.

There are many reasons for the increase in Chinese optics, but 2024 will probably be an even bigger year because from what I have been hearing from my Chinese contacts the government is taking optics very seriously so manufacturers are getting a lot of support to catch up with other countries. Some have speculated that the government is funding RND for optics technology to be used on spy satellites, which shouldn’t be surprising with the trade barriers the West built.

To be clear I know that spy satellites have very different requirements than camera optics, but a lot of the lens polishing techniques, motor miniturization, etc… carry over to camera lenses, glasses, and more. I can speculate a lot further, but my understanding is that most optics companies in China are getting “hand me down” technology from other industries attached to government, which has lead to an explosion of quality Chinese optics. It also explains in part why so many companies are releasing the same lenses packaged slightly differently.
