FStoppers caught Canon Italy and Spain posting images that are identical to those taken by Elia Locardi the creator of the Photographing the World series which we have covered here before. According to FStoppers the photograph that Canon posted to their Facebook and Instagram account uses the same composition as Elia’s original work and the sky from his photo, but I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they just did a lot of photoshop work. You can see the two embedded photos below and I wasn’t even going to link to the Canon one except you really have to see it to believe it.
Canon is a huge company and it is perfectly acceptable for them to promote superior systems and photography when they come across it, but when they get caught red-handed like this posting a partially Fujifilm photo without credit it should make us all wonder how many other promotional photos might have been captured in part or in whole with non-Canon cameras over the years. Doesn’t Canon have enough skilled photographers to pick from and how do they go about selecting photos to promote as Canon Photos?
This whole fiasco is partially why I do not particularly enjoy highly edited photography because it becomes less about the capture and more about your photoshop skills and ability to hide what you have done. If you want to really dive into the infringement FStoppers has access to the originals and has singled out a bird that is in the sky by a bush in both photos, but the sky being an exact match should be a dead give away on it’s own. Nice going Canon and I love your mirrorless camera.
