Sigma 18-50mm f/2 DC DN Patent Found

Asobinet found a patent for a Sigma 18-50mm f/2 DC DN that might have been in the works while the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary was under development. It is unlikely we will see this interesting f/2 zoom anytime soon, but maybe Sigma will go back to it if f/2 zooms become popular. The design is very similar to the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary that is coming to X-Mount in December.

Example 4 seems to be for APS-C from the image height, and is a large-diameter zoom lens that covers from a wide angle of 18 mm to a medium telephoto of 50 mm with an open F value of F2. It is one step brighter than the current ” 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN “, has more blur, and is an interesting optical system that is easy to use even in low light.

Looking at the lens configuration, it looks a lot like the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN (not a 100% match). Perhaps F2 zoom was one of the options at the stage of considering a practical lens. However, now that the F2.8 zoom has arrived, it seems unlikely that the F2 zoom will see the light of day.

Example

  • Focal length: 18.50-48.50
  • F value: 1.94-2.10
  • Angle of view: 77.86-31.58
  • Image height: 14.20
  • Overall length: 115.36-137.89
