Philip Bloom did a talk for Cinima5D at Photo + Adventure. It’s about 44min and most of it is about The Skiathos Kittens that he made with the Fujifilm GFX100. Below is a summary of what was covered and below you can watch the documentary he made.
- Canon 5DII was the first magical camera for cinematography 11 years ago
- Full frame is now old news and medium format video is where we should be going
- The Pentax 645 was first, but the video was very bad full of image artifacts and rolling shutter problems
- The Fujifilm GFX50S was much better because it didn’t have artifacts, but the rolling shutter was still an issue
- The Fujifilm GFX100 is the first usable medium format camera for video
- GFX100 shouldn’t be good at shooting video, but it is good
- Philip Bloom made a documentary about The Skiathos Kittens using the GFX100
- Fujifilm loaned him a GFX100 because he requested one for this documentary
- Philip didn’t want to like the camera to save the 10k, but he loved it
- GFX100 isn’t a large camera for videographers
- You only need 8k for 4k
- If you used all 102MP it’s about 12k of resolution
- 1.7x more surface area of Full Frame
- 4k up to 30p without crop
- 10-bit internally in 4:2:0 h.265 hvec
- You’re more mobile if you do not need an external recorder
- Good codec internally
- IBIS which is important for filming
- AF is solid for filming
- Low light is good on GFX
- Slow-motion is the one thing it doesn’t do, but it will do it in 1080p, which isn’t good
- Bigger sensors give you a different look and better low light
- Can do 10-bit 4:2:2 externally, but not needed
- Don’t do 8-bit h.264, which he tried because he was running out of space, but it made the final product suffer
- 8-bit has nasty banding
- Eterna is beautiful
- You can turn Log into Eterna with Fujifilm’s LUT
- It makes sense to shoot Log, but make sure you expose to the right
- Phillip used the 110mm and 45mm for the majority of this project
- Manual focus in a nightmare with Fujifilm lenses, because their linear focus mode requires too many turns
- AF isn’t perfect, but it works 80% of the time for his needs, but it does pulse some
- IBIS was good enough for car shots on a tripod bungeed in the back seat to look good with the 110mm
- All of his point of view shots were handheld
- Took the GFX in the water
- 6400 ISO is great for video
- He was shocked at how good the 102MP in low light
- The GFX100 image is like moving stills the quality is so good
- It’s a great documentary camera
- If you use the app for monitoring you lose control of AF so he had to work around it
- ASCOON wifi transmitter was his solution for being able to see the frame without losing AF
- Probably would have looked great with a7III, but the GFX has a look he likes
- Any other camera might not have looked as good though especially in the car the IBIS was great on the GFX100
- Philip Bloom takes more photos than video
- The GFX100 is brilliant for images, but Instagram really can’t handle them without resizing before uploading
- The cropping ability with 100MP is crazy
- Most people will never see how good the GFX100 images can look
- Bloom has been putting photos on flickr to share how amazing the GFX100 looks
- Cinama5D probably should have used some better screens because Bloom complains about them throughout the presentation
- Q&A he says that the GFX100 preamps are almost as good as Sony’s
- The preamp is very strong
- 99% of the video is in camera audio
- He used 400mbps ALL-I Log 10-bit
- This project made him buy a GFX100
- With the GFX50S he would always have another camera with him
- The Sony a7RIV doesn’t have enough megapixels joking around im sure
