Sony put out a press release a little while ago about a new large-format sensor they have developed with global shutter the IMX661 (First spotted here in Aug). It is a little larger than the sensor that the Fujifilm GFX currently uses, but not by much, which means it could be used in a future GFX camera. I know the GFX100S was just announced, but the GFX100 has been around for a few years now, and when it is eventually updated it’s unlikely that Fujiflm will stick with the same 102MP sensor.
The current 102MP sensor is the IMX461:
Sony’s spec sheet states the sensor is 48.64mm x 40.38mm, but we know in application it is 44 x 33mm and a diagonal of 55mm
Sonys new 127MP sensor is the IMX661:
Sony states that it is 46.2 mm x 32.9 mm with a diagonal of 56.73mm

It’s good to see that Sony has some new large-format sensors in the works that Fujifilm could implement in the not too distant future. My guess is that if this chip doesn’t end up in a GFX it will give us an idea of where Sony is going with their large format sensors and the global shutter would certainly help Fujifilm save space or even remove the shutter assembly from future cameras. Then maybe we can see them actually release a modular GFX camera.
