Fujifilm Increases CO2 Reduction Goal From 50 to 90 Million Tons

CO Fujifilm Holdings 2030 fiscal year 2 raises the emission reduction targets
Acquired the certification of the international environmental initiative “Science Based Targets (SBT) Initiative”
Newly set a target of 60% of sales of products and services that are particularly excellent in reducing environmental impact

FUJIFILM Holdings Co., Ltd. (President: Kenji Sukeno) has revised its environmental targets up to fiscal 2030, and will address climate change both in terms of “solving social issues through business” and “consideration of the environment and society in business processes”. Accelerate countermeasures.

First, we have raised the CO 2 emission reduction target for our entire product life cycle, from raw material procurement to manufacturing, transportation, use, and disposal, from 30% to 45% compared to fiscal 2013. Regarding this target, the WB2°C (well 2°C) well-established target based on the scientific basis for achieving the “2°C target” of the Paris Agreement from the “Science Based Targets (SBT) Initiative” *1 which is an international environmental initiative. below 2℃, well below 2℃) certified. We have also raised the target value of 50 million tons to 90 million tons by contributing to the reduction of CO 2 emissions by providing our own products and services with high CO 2 reduction effects to society .

The FUJIFILM Group has always provided environmentally conscious products and services to society, considering their impact on the environment when developing products and services. Among them, those that are particularly excellent in reducing environmental impact have been certified as Fujifilm Group’s “Green Value Products,” and this time, we have newly set a target of making them 60% of the total sales.

<Main environmental targets up to FY 2030 that will be revised or newly established>

Conventional target New goal
① In-house CO 2 emission reduction *2 30% (compared to FY2013) 45% (compared to FY2013)
2) Reduction amount that contributes to CO 2 emission reduction by providing our own products and services with high CO 2 reduction effect to society 50 million tons 90 million tons
③Sales of Fujifilm Group’s “Green Value Products,” which are particularly excellent in reducing environmental impact 60% of the entire company

FUJIFILM Holdings established a CSR plan “Sustainable Value Plan 2030” (“SVP2030”) in FY2017, targeting FY2030. We have been promoting activities in terms of “environmental and social considerations.” It is widely recognized that the impact of global warming on society is enormous even at the goal of the Paris Agreement, which is to keep the artificial temperature rise below 2°C after the Industrial Revolution. Under these circumstances, the Fujifilm Group decided to further promote climate change measures and raise the environmental targets for CO 2 emission reduction.

As part of the economic measures that accompany the spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19), “green recovery” has been advocated worldwide to build a sustainable society by responding to climate change. The Fujifilm Group will continue to promote “SVP2030” and contribute to the solution of post-corona social issues by creating new value through product, service and technology development.

*1 With the aim of promoting a greenhouse gas emission reduction target based on scientific grounds to keep the global temperature rise below 2°C compared to before the Industrial Revolution, in September 2014, CDP Established by four organizations: the Institute for Natural Resources (WRI), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and the United Nations Global Compact. Then, in November 2016, the Paris Agreement, which aims to keep the temperature below 2°C, came into effect as an international framework for climate change.

<Outline of the certification system for the sales targets of the newly established Fujifilm Group “Green Value Products”>
As a measure to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society, FUJIFILM Holdings has met certain standards regarding environmental consideration, such as response to climate change, resource recycling, reduction of environmental risks such as harmful substances, and reduction of waste. Since 2018, we have been operating a system to certify our own products and services as “Green Value Products” of the Fujifilm Group. We have set a common certification rank (diamond, gold, silver) for the entire group and have certified 140 products so far. This time, we have set a new target of 60% of sales of the Fujifilm Group “Green Value Products”.

Rank name Certification conditions
diamond Products and services that use innovative technology to significantly reduce environmental impact
gold Products and services that reduce the environmental impact at the highest level in the industry
Silver Products and services that reduce the environmental impact beyond the industry standard level

* Standard environmentally friendly products: Products and services that reduce the environmental load at the industry standard level by considering the impact on the environment during product development.
* Fujifilm Group’s “Green Value Products” certification system is designed according to the international standard ISO14021 established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Main products certified as “Green Value Products” by the Fujifilm Group

  1. Completely untreated thermal CTP plate for newspapers “SUPERIA ZN-II” (Diamond rank)
A printing plate used in the process of printing newspapers on a rotary press. By using this product, the development process that uses strong alkaline chemicals, water, and electricity is not required, and chemicals, water, electricity, and waste liquid are eliminated. Combined with the effects of closed-loop recycling, in which aluminum, which is the main raw material, is reused to manufacture CTP plates of the same quality, it contributes to a reduction of approximately 390 tons *3 of CO 2 emissions per newspaper factory .
  2. Data archive storage system “dternity on-site archive” (Gold rank)
Tape storage solution that combines magnetic tape and hard disk that can safely store large amounts of data at low cost for a long time. Significant reduction in energy consumption *4 by replacing infrequently used archive data with hard disk and large capacity magnetic tape .
  3. Document handling software “DocuWorks” (Gold rank)
Software that has a function to centrally store paper and electronic documents and freely edit the information. In cooperation with the secure and large-capacity cloud storage service “Working Folder”, it is possible to transfer information and utilize it smoothly both inside and outside the company, regardless of location, time, or terminal. CO 2 emissions are reduced by reducing the number of sheets printed on paper and the frequency of people moving .

*3 Calculated based on the average plate usage per plant (5,000 m 2 /month).z
*4 When storing 960 TB of data on magnetic tape for one year, the CO 2 emission is 1/18 of that of storing the same amount of data on a hard disk. According to JEITA Tape Storage Technical Committee.
