Fujifilm cameras were used by many winners of the 2020 World Press Photo Awards in addition to Luca Locatelli winning overall. Above Makoto Oishi from Fujifilm interviewed Luca Locatelli about the win and below you can see a summary of the discussion:
- Luca Locatelli got into photography around 30
- Previously he worked in technology
- He was traveling in the Amazon and bought a camera which made him fall in love with photography
- He left his job 2 years after the trip and became a photographer
- Makoto Oishi studied technology also
- WPP reaches everyone so its important for Luca Locatelli’s work because he wants to promote his subjects
- WPP doesn’t get you more work but it makes your work more recognized
- He’s been working on circular economy solutions exploring new ways to live on our planet due to the problems in the environment
- If something is made of recycled materials that is the most effective and an example of circular economies
- Access is the biggest issue he has with his work because most companies or scientific institutions are hard to get access too
- It’s also hard to figure out what to expect because many institutions do now have photos online so you can see what subjects are at what location
- Luca Locatelli tries to imagine what the future would look like and capture subjects that fit that vision
- He wants you to see the photo and want to read the description to figure out what it is
- Fujifilm was attractive because Luca Locatelli considers himself a medium format shooter and he has a GFX100
- He uses the GFX100 for photos and video
- Luca Locatelli believes the most important thing as a photographer is be yourself
- Study and emulate others, but when it comes to your work find yourself in your photos
