DPReview: Shooting Landscapes on The Fujifilm GFX 50R With Nigel Danson

Nigel Danson was invited to give his opinion about the new Fujifilm GFX 50R in a recent DPReview video. Below are some highlights from the video:

  • Ergonomics
    • Leaking out the ISO dial was a mistake
    • Shouldn’t have left out the 4-way pad
    • It’s a big camera and Fujifilm should add buttons since the camera has space
    • Multiply your focal length by 0.80 to get your effective focal length
  • Handling
    • Hasn’t had much luck shooting the camera handheld for landscapes
    • It’s much easier to grab a camera like the Nikon Z7 to shoot a handheld landscape
    • Without a doubt, the Fujifilm GFX50S beats the Nikon Z7 at image quality, but the Z7 is easier to shoot handheld.
    • He really enjoys shooting with his eye on the left side of the camera
  • Image Quality and More
    • The best quality camera I have ever used
    • Image quality is incredible right up to the edges
    • The lenses are amazing
    • The tonal quality of rocks is incredible and the transition of tonality throughout the sky is really good.
    • Rock detail is amazing and stands out among other similar photos
    • There is very little noise
  • Why Don’t I Own One
    • Price of the body
    • Price of the lenses
    • Nikon lenses are softer at the edges but the change in overall quality is not justifiable
    • Significantly bigger than anything else and the lenses don’t help
    • If you want uncompromised quality the GFX50R is the camera you get
    • If you want to do video etc and want to take 2-3 bodies there are better options like the X-T3
  • Summary
    • Amazing Image Quality
    • Joy to use
    • The rangefinder on the left is great
    • It’s bulky
    • It’s expensive
