Fujifilm X-T3 Video Review Comparison, DJI Ronin-S, and Anamorphic Lens Footage

Many have called the Fujifilm X-T3’s video best in class, but how does it compare to larger sensor cameras like the Sony a7III, Canon EOS R, and Nikon Z7? Max has taken the time to put together a pretty good comparison where Sony and Fujifilm are neck and neck, but Canon and Nikon flounder. It’s not surprising that Canon/Nikon’s flagship mirrorless cameras can’t compete with Fujifilm/Sony’s more mature offerings, but maybe future cameras will be more competitive. For now, Sony and Fujifilm make the best mirrorless cameras for video.

With the Fujifilm X-T3 being a competent video camera there are going to be more videographers/cinematographers using gimbals and anamorphic lenses with the camera. I included an example of what you can get with an anamorphic lens adapter attached to the Fujifilm X-T3 below and there is a good review of how the Fujifilm X-T3 and DJI Ronin-S work together at Cinima5D.

4K video comparison:

  • The Canon is very Soft
  • Sony and Fujifilm have very similar detail
  • Nikon has fake detail from over sharpening
  • Nikon has a lot of aliesing
  • Black magic look good
  • In order, Sony, Followed closely by Fujifilm, BlackMagic, Nikon Z7, Canon EOS R

1080P Video Comparison

  • Canon looks very soft again
  • Canon doesn’t crop their sensor
  • Nikon is over sharpened again
  • Canon looks like 720p upscaled because there is no detail left where others have some or a lot
  • Nikon has a crunchy image
  • Fujifilm and Black magic look good with Fujifilm oversampling
  • In order, Fujifilm, BlackMagic, Sony, Nikon, Canon EOS R

Slow Motion

  • Canon can only shoot at 720p 120fps with no dual pixel AF or audio
  • Canon looks very soft again
  • Nikon can shoot at 1080p 120fps with an APS-C crop
  • The Nikon has good AF an and audio while shooting slow motion
  • BlackMagic shoots at 1080p using about 1/4 of the sensor so poor low light performance
  • BlackMagic has no continuous AF, but it has audio
  • Fujifilm X-T3 crops in 1.3x so about 4/3 size
  • Fujifilm X-T3 has good AF, but no audio and the footage is conformed in camera
  • Sony a7III is the only one that shoots in full frame 1080p 120fps
  • The Sony can be slowed down in camera or choose to slow it down later and has full audio in the camera.
  • Canon looks bad
  • Nikon over sharpened gain
  • BlackMagic looks softer
  • Sony and Fujifilm look very good
  • In order, Fujifilm, Sony, BlackMagic, Nikon, Canon EOS R
