The Fujifilm X-M5 is expected to ship on the 21st in the United States, but Japan has released an interesting statement about the launch being November 28th in Asia. There is also something new about this announcement by Fujifilm:

“The mirrorless digital camera “FUJIFILM X-M5” being released in Japan will only have “Japanese and English” built-in language settings. Therefore, in consideration of the convenience of foreign customers living in Japan and tourists staying long-term, we will start a “language addition service” from November 28th. By using this service, you can add one language of your choice. Please check here for details of this service and how to apply.”

Fujifilm is planning a language addition service for the Fujifilm X-M5. Hopefully, this service will come at no additional charge and it makes me curious if they are running out of space for languages or if Fujifilm is just trying to get cameras to market as quickly as they can so localisation of the menus has been delayed. At least English speakers will be able to use Japanese cameras without issue.

Fujifilm GFX ETERNA and Fujinon 32-90mm Power Zoom Lens (FUJIFILM G) Listed At B&H Photo

The Fujifilm GFX ETERNA and Fujinon 32-90mm Power Zoom Lens (FUJIFILM G) are now listed listed on B&H Photo. While there isn’t new information in their listings the listings make me wonder if Fujifilm will call the lens Fujinon 32-90mm or Fujinon GF32-90mm. The announcement of the ETERNA was unique and surprising but Fujifilm has been working on it for quite some time based on the two interviews (1, 2) they have given about the camera already.

Fujifilm emphasizing that the ETERNA is for filmmakers makes me wonder if Fujifilm is going after Hollywood with the ETERNA, which could have an interesting impact on the look of movies. The impact could change the look of movies in the future by reducing the depth of field and changing the quality of the color on the screen. The GFX is also great at low-light photography and with 102MP not being necessary for 4k and 8k I am excited to see what Fujifilm can do with Pixel binning to make the GFX ETERNA see in the dark.

Additional FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA Interview – Fujifilm Is Committed To The GFX ETERNA Product Range

Yesterday CineD posted a short interview with Fujifilm about the Fujifilm GFX ETERNA, but today CineD released an additional interview as part of their podcast. You can read our summary below or check out the full interview above during the first 11 minutes of the podcast:

  • The color is the biggest deal about the FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA
  • Fujifilm calls it a filmmaking camera over a cinema camera
  • Fujifilm collectively came up with the name
  • Fujifilm has been in the industry for a long time and they started off making film
  • Fujifilm also made cinema lenses so they know the industry
  • The first Fujifilm camera to support 4k was the Fujifilm X-T2 around 2016
  • Fujifilm has been putting more features in their cameras for a long time which led to hybrid cameras and the GFX
  • The GFX ETERNA was thought of when the GFX100 was being used for video production
  • The feedback that came from the GFX100 was that they wished Fujifilm made a video GFX
  • The color is probably more important than the large format
  • It is also important to have quality optics for the system like the GF 32-90mm f/3.5
  • Of course, the large format sensor is desirable too
  • Fujifilm is committed to this product range so they will invest in making lenses beyond PL mount, GF, Fujinon Premista, and Fujinon Cabrio lenses
  • Pricing hasn’t been established yet but Fujifilm tried to make cameras affordable like the GFX that made medium format affordable
  • The manager is most proud of how well the Fujifilm team works together
  • Fujifilm announced the camera early so that they could get feedback to improve the final product
  • If you use a GFX100II to film with then there are tons of accessories that you have to attach and the GFX ETERNA should disrupt your workflow less, which is why it has taken Fujifilm a long time to develop this camera
