French photography site Phototrend published its interview with Managing Director Foucauld Prové from Sigma at the Salon de la Photo 2024 show which you can read in French here and check out a translated summary of it below:

  • Sigma has launched some great lenses in 2024 including the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art II and the unique Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art
  • Sigma just presented a Cine AF lens at IBC 2024
  • The Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN and Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for RF mount in September
  • Canon RF mount is slowly allowing third parties to produce AF lenses
  • Sigma has more APS-C lenses coming to RF mount including the 16mm, 23mm, 30mm, and 56mm f/1.4 lenses in January
  • Sigma RF lenses have done well because there aren’t a lot of great APS-C lenses for RF mount
  • Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art II sales have been strong so Sigma is pleased
  • Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art has been well received but it is a very high-end product
  • Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art has been received surprisingly well with many wedding and concert photographers finding it is the only lens they need

  • Sigma has had its best years in history over the last three years globally and the future is looking good too
  • E-mount has the strongest demand and demand for RF mount is growing quickly

  • Sony is bigger than Nikon largely because they have camera options for everyone including APS-C
  • If Sigma launched a Contemporary 70-200mm it would likely be a Sigma 70-200mm f/4 DC DN Contemporary, but Sigma isn’t convinced that a more compact lightweight 70-200mm f/4 would sell well
  • Sigma could also launch a Sigma 70-300mm that is ultra-high quality and compact
  • Sigma covers the traditional 14-24mm, 16-28mm, 24-70mm, 28-70mm, 70-200mm lenses, but also wants to offer more atypical products

The Fujifilm X-M5 is a unique size and value proposition for photographers that compares well with the popular but never-refreshed Fujifilm X70 and the Sony ZV-E10II. As you can see from the Camerasize.com comparison, the Fujifilm X-M5 is almost as compact as the Fujifilm X70 and quite a bit smaller than the comparable Sony ZV-E10 II. All three cameras are great for photographers, but only the X-M5 and ZV-E10II are suitable for videographers and both are quite capable. FUJIFILM Corporation (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Yoshikazu Goto) has recently begun a technical verification with Ishikawa Energy Research Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Ota City, Gunma Prefecture; Representative Director: Mitsuru Ishikawa) regarding remote shooting technology using the company’s mirrorless digital camera “GFX100 series” with a 102-megapixel large format sensor *1 mounted on a new series hybrid drone *2 capable of long flight times. Through this verification, the two companies aim to realize large-area, ultra-high-definition shooting from the sky using a drone. The new drone equipped with the “FUJIFILM GFX100S II” from the “GFX100 series” will be exhibited at the Ishikawa Energy Research booth at the “2024 Japan International Aerospace Exhibition” to be held at Tokyo Big Sight from October 16th to 19th.

In this technical verification, Ishikawa Energy Research will be responsible for developing software to remotely control the “GFX100 Series” on a drone that can fly for approximately 90 minutes using advanced engine technology *3 , and our company will provide technical support to remotely control the “GFX100 Series” mounted on the drone. The two companies aim to establish technology to mount the “GFX100 Series,” which can capture ultra-high resolution images, on a drone capable of long flight times, and capture a wide area in ultra-high definition from the sky while responding promptly to weather changes during long-term shooting. This technology is expected to be used in a variety of situations, including inspecting large equipment, managing farms and forests over a wide area, and checking the damage situation at disaster sites.

The “GFX100 series” equipped with a 102-megapixel large-format sensor can capture ultra-high resolution images when combined with a dedicated interchangeable lens, capturing approximately four times the area of ​​a camera equipped with a 26-megapixel APS-C size sensor. In addition, the latest model in the “GFX100 series,” the “FUJIFILM GFX100S II,” weighs approximately 883g (body only), making it extremely lightweight for a camera equipped with a large-format sensor with over 100 million pixels, so it can be mounted on a drone as a consumer camera system, demonstrating overwhelming cost performance compared to drone-specific cameras of the same sensor size.

Fujitsu will continue to develop solutions that take advantage of the ultra-high resolution image capture capability that is a distinctive feature of the GFX100 Series.

  • Fujifilm GFX covers formats outside of full Frame/APS-C and makes up 40% of that market.
  • There is big demand for cameras below $1,000 that aren’t entry-level which the X-M5 is designed to fill.
  • The X-M5 was originally designed for YouTubers, but the more they looked at it the more it made sense for photographers too
  • Young people today no longer practice photography and few buy the cameras their parents would have, but there is big demand for vintage cameras
  • AI in camera can be tricky because some want their photos to be auto-retouched, while others would like to retouch manually, but things like smile detection have been around for years
  • AI will help speed up photography processing.
  • The Fujifilm XF16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II was completely redesigned to reduce its size and weight, which was possible thanks to smaller more powerful LM motors.
