Photons to Photos: New Fujifilm X-T100 PDR Results vs Fujifilm X-T2/X-T3

Photons to Photos just released their Fujifilm X-T100 results and the camera performs slightly worse than the Fujifilm X-T2/X-T3, but it’s results are still respectable. The Fujifilm X-T100 is a camera priced to sell well and it’s good to see that its performance isn’t that far behind more expensive options. You can manipulate the results here if you like.

Fujifilm’s Partnership With Panasonic to Create an Organic Sensor is Looking Promising

Personal view interviewed Panasonic about m43 and L-mount. During the interview, Panasonic’s partnership with Fujifilm came up and they are making progress.

“since its initial announcement in 2016, there is a continuous cooperation between Panasonic and FujiFilm in development of the organic sensor technology. The recent results are very promising. The mass production of this kind of sensor, however, will take a little bit more time, and today I cannot say when we can use this kind of a sensor.”

“If we can increase the relative ratio of the photodiode relative to two other parts, this will make sensor more efficient and also result in the better image quality. The reason why an organic photoconductive film makes better efficiency is because this allows to maximize the light reception area and more angle of the incident light. The organic sensor has less deflection. This means that the organic sensor can get more efficiency/sensitivity. This theoretically could make the organic film sensor better.”

Organic Sensor technology is sounding promising and I hope we hear more soon.

Kipon Baveyes EF-FX AF ”Speedbooster” Review

The Kipon Baveyes EF-FX ”Speedbooster” with Auto Focus works better than many of its competitors at its price point, but still has some typical lockup issues that require you to restart the camera. You can also experience some vignetting on the Fujifilm X-H1 because there is no lens correction for the IBS. Kipon makes a series of AF adapters below that all perform very similarly. If you do not want the Baveyes focal reducer there is a standard smart adapter and there is also one for the Fujifilm GFX. A beta firmware was also used in the review above.

Pros

  • 1.05x Crop instead of 1.5
  • AF and Aperture Control on Canon Adapters
  • Not Very Expensive
  • All metal build that is very sturdy
  • Firmware updates
  • Results are similar to other adapters, but a little less buggy than Viltrox
  • Works great for video with manual focus
  • Pretty good AF
  • Good for portraiture, landscapes, architecture, family, travel, etc…

Cons

  • Swirly Bokeh when used with some lenses that some might not like
  • Video sometimes has vignetting when recording on the X-H1 due to IBIS
  • ND sometimes creeps into the frame due to IBIS
  • Not as reliable as native lens
  • Not great for street shooting or sports
  • Video AF isn’t great

Kipon Handevision IBELUX f/0.85 Mark II Roundup

The Kipon Handevision IBELUX f/0.85 Mark II hasn’t been overly popular considering it’s crazy f/0.85 aperture. To be clear this lens is in no way designed to be as well corrected as a Leica Noctilux f/0.95, but for $1,500 it wouldn’t be.  Instead, the Kipon f/0.85 is designed for photographers that like vintage looking photos with lots of character.

You’re going to get CA and some softness with a lens like this, but this lens wasn’t designed for clinical photographers. Kipon has also reduced the price over the mark one, which makes it far more accessible and from the video above the Kipon rep was telling Kai that the Kipon Handevision IBELUX f/0.85 Mark II performs much better on Fujifilm bodies than Sony, but they are unsure why. Below there is a German review that does a good job of discussing the lenses strengths and weakness, but you will have to use the subtitle translation feature if you don’t speak German.

Finally, at the very bottom, there is a video filmed on the Sony a7 that demonstrates how easily you can really blow your final image with this lens. Sony colors really don’t shine with this lens and if you shoot with a f/0.85 lens without fully understanding its characteristics than your final results will suffer greatly. Many photographers have gotten used to trusting their cameras, but a manual f/0.85 lens really requires full manual controls to get good results. They didn’t do Kipon any favors by covering this unique lens, but their video is an example of how not to use this lens.

Maybe the Kipon Handevision IBELUX f/0.85 Mark II will sell better than the first. I’m sure more would be interested in it if they could get it below $1,000, but at around $1,500 many will need more performance to justify the purchase.
