Fuji Guys: Fujifilm GFX 50R Top Features

The Fujifilm GFX50R is a very appealing camera and even GFX50S owners like me have an interest in it for how it changes the way you use the camera. That being said a lot of Full Frame camera owners are very interested in the Fujifilm GFX also and the GFX50R is going to attract even more of them since many found the GFX50S to be a little too expensive. Below is a summary of what you will learn about in this video if you’re new to Fujifilm cameras and recently picked up a Fujifilm GFX50R:

  • 2nd GFX Camera
  • 51MP
  • Rangefinder designed
  • 3.69Million Dot EVF
  • 0.77x magnification makes it easy to look through
  • 3.2-inch LCD Screen that is highly customizable
  • Display back can remove all of the information
  • View mode lets you do LCD only/EVF only/or auto-switch between them.
  • 7 customizable buttons
  • Can customize 4 swipe spots on the LCD too
  • Can also customize the command dial
  • Holding display back brings up the customize menu
  • Dual UHS-2 Slots that the camera can use to write RAW files faster
  • Sequential writing to the card slots will write everything to the first card until full and then the second
  • Backup writing will write a copy of your photos to each card slot
  • RAW/JPEG will write your RAW files to the first slot and JPEG to the second slot
  • If you play an image back and want to delete it the only way to have it removed from the first and second slot is to hit menu after play and then turn on simultaneously delete.
  • Bluetooth allows the wifi connection to work better.
  • Connecting your camera is easy using a QR code and the Fujifilm App
  • You can sync the date/time with your phone so your camera time auto updates and is accurate
  • You can connect up to 7 devices to your camera
  • Bluetooth doesn’t take much power
  • The camera will auto ping the phone every 5 minutes or so to get new time/location information
  • You can auto copy a 3MP file or a full-size file to your phone
  • Auto transfer happens in playback mode or when you power down your camera
  • You can use your phone as remote control for the camera and it uses Bluetooth
  • You can focus bracket to capture a sharp image from the foreground to the background when the depth of field is not sharp.
  • Landscapes should consist of a 20 image capture, but macro probably 100 to get a sharp image with focus bracketing
  • With focus bracketing, you probably want to set it for 5 steps for landscape and 10 for macro
  • You can also delay each focus bracketing shot
  • Focus bracketing should start with the closest subject.
  • There are a lot of lens adapters for the GFX now and you can use a 35mm crop mode if you use full frame glass without a big enough image circle that is under the shooting menu.
  • RAW support is growing and now includes Capture One

More Fujifilm X-T3 Camera of The Year Picks and Why They Are Right

Fujifilm continues to get recognition for the Fujifilm X-T3, which is interesting since the X-T3 is basically a very fast Fujifilm X-T2. Very few sites picked the Sony a7III or new Canon/Nikon mirrorless cameras, but I have a feeling many that picked that Canon/Nikon haven’t spent time with the Fujifilm X-T3 or Sony a7III.

While I’m not a fan of Sony’s interface I have to admit the a7III offers a lot of value, but so does the Fujifilm X-T3. Kinotika above probably best summarizes why Fujifilm takes home the win in 2018 and it’s their glass. If you buy a Sony camera you still have to buy very expensive Sony glass to fully utilize your camera, but if you buy into Fujifilm there is a lot of affordable high-quality glass to pick from.

If we do the math Sony a7III ($1,998) + 24-70 ($2,198) +70-200 ($2,598) = $6794 compared to Fujifilm X-T3 ($1,499) + 24-70 equiv ($1,049) + 70-200 equiv ($1,599) = $4147 that’s a savings of $2647 which can’t be ignored. With the savings, you could further build out a very respectable camera bag with some high-quality quality primes. The Sony kit can get a little cheaper with their f/4 zooms, but then Fujifilm has tons of very affordable options that would compete with those lenses.

For me it’s a no-brainer Fujifilm won 2019 by a mile and if price is no object and you simply must have that Full Frame or better look get a Fujifilm GFX50R or GFX50S. Both are a joy to use and offer better image quality than anything in Sony’s line up, but admittedly the Sony a7RIII gets close. The price difference between the GFX50R and a7RIII isn’t very much, but we are still waiting for more GFX zoom lenses, which we will see this year and GFX glass prices surpass Sony G Master prices. I think Fujifilm is on the right track and I can’t wait to see what surprises they have in store for us in 2019. The Fujifilm GFX100 is going to be a great addition to Fujifilm’s lineup.

Brick and Mortar Instax Film Deal

Walmart has a very good price for Instax film that you can get in person $12.60 for a double pack. You can also order it from their site if you do not mind waiting, but if you’re going to do that B&H Photo has matched Walmarts price. The best price at this time on Amazon is almost $4 more per box and even if you buy in bulk it’s still more expensive on Amazon per print at this time.

Picktorial 3.5 Released

Picktorial 3.5 was just released and you can read about some of the changes below like DAM, but it is also bringing a subscription model which might be controversial. I greatly enjoy a lot of these smaller RAW editors myself and I always find it disappointing when they turn to a subscription model like Adobe. I wish companies would stop doing this because it turns off a large portion of users.

DPReview: Fujifilm New Year’s Resolutions

DPReview put together a wishlist article about what they would like to see from each manufacturer in 2019. Their request are pretty well known by now, but their request for an X100 Full-Frame camera in 2019 is the most unlikely. They really should just ask for a medium format X100 with a fixed 35mm f/2.8. Fujifilm might try to create one someday soon and they could make it somewhat compact.

Fujifilm – in 2019 we wish you would…

  • Make a full-frame X100 / monochrome X100 / 28mm-equiv X100. (We really like the X100).
  • Continue improving your face and eye-detection autofocus. The X-T3 was a great start.
  • Make a proper X70 successor. The XF10 doesn’t count.
  • Refresh your F1.4 primes.
  • Don’t try to palm us off with 15fps ‘4K video’ ever again. For shame.

You can read the rest of the article here.
