Fujifilm GFX 100S Shadow Noise Performance Speculation

Jim Kasson has long contributed to the GFX photography community with his blog The Last Word and he recently utilized datapoints from Photons to Photos to project how well the new Fujifilm GFX100 IMX461 will perform. You can read his analysis here if you want to get into his methodology, but basically, he used the data from the Phase One IQ4 150MP with a Sony IMX411 inside to project the expected performance of the Sony IMX461 chip from the same family. Which lead him to the following conclusion:

The new camera should be much better than the old in very dark shadow regions.

The input-referred read noise of the IQ4 150 MP bounces around, and there are some ISOs that should be avoided for best results. It remains to be seen whether that will be true of the GFX 100S. There is reason to think that the read noise of a smaller sensor could be lower than that of a larger one with the same pixel design. Should that be the case, the GFX 100S numbers will look even better in very dark portions of images. – Kasson

The Fujifilm GFX100 sensor looks very promising indeed and it should be a substantial step up over the old Sony IMX161 chip in the Fujifilm GFX50S.

New Zeiss Otus 100mm f/1.4 Fully Covers GFX Medium Format Sensor

According to HCam.de the new Zeiss Otus 100mm f/1.4 fully covers the Fujifilm GFX 44 x 33mm sensor. Other Otus lenses perform similarly, but this is the first we have heard about this unique lens for portraiture. It will be interesting to see how Otus lenses perform when the Fujifilm GFX100 comes out since Otus lenses are designed for high resolution and without compromise to the extent that some photographers find Otus to be too clinical.

You can get the new Zeiss Otus 100mm f/1.4 at B&H Photo / Adorama

As for an Adapter, Fotodiox and Kipon make quality dumb adapters, but HCam.de used a Techart AF Adapter.

DPRTV: Fujinon XF8-16mm WR LM Review

The Nano-GI Fujinon XF8-16mm WR LM is big heavy and expensive, but is it worth the money? DRPTV tries their best to demonstrate the capabilities of this lens, but in my opinion, they fail simply because it’s astro season and they didn’t even try to do an astro shoot and their low light city shot was nothing worth showing off in a video.

Wide lenses and especially fast wide lenses aren’t for everyone, which is probably why they missed the mark when comparing it to Sony’s 12-24mm f/4 that is less expensive. However, I do agree with them that the Fujinon XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS is probably a better lens for most Fujifilm photographers.

They Likes

  • Powerful AF motors
  • Low Chroma
  • Well corrected distortion and vignetting
  • Nice soft background when close focused
  • Optically fantastic
  • Sharp
  • Perfect by f/8
  • Sharper than the 10-24mm at f/4 at 10mm f/2.8
  • Will rarely be concerned at f/2.8
  • Well built

They Didn’t Like

  • Not being able to use standard filters due to the fixed filter hood
  • No OIS
  • A little bit of weirdness in the corners at f/2.8
  • Expensive
